I'm Officially an Old Fogey

OMFG.

I just saw the latest Macy’s commercial and sad to say I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA who all those people were. Well - other than Donald Trump. Great Onig, I’m not *completely * out of it!

When the HELL did I get so out of touch with our current culture???
(btw: I’m posting on the dope for the first time in over two years. Hello again everyone…)

Do you have a link to the commercial?

Hello, Scubaqueen, and welcome to MY world! cause I can’t tell a gossip girl from a Kardashian from a yakking New Jersey housewife, either. (though isn’t Martha Stewart in that commercial, too?)

Ahhh…

Welcome to the world of silly old farts!

Of course she doesn’t have a link. Old fogeys like her don’t know how to do all that high tech computer stuff.

Welcome back Scubaqueen

Is this the one? If it is, I recognized Martha Steward, Jennifer Lopez and Donald Trump. I’m only half fogey.

Hi. My name is Chimera and I want you to get off my lawn.

(Chorus: Hi Chimera!)

Also, I believe Jessica Simpson.

And the damn commercial is too damn LOUD!

I’ve been an Old Fogey for years now. I hardly ever recognize people in commercials that I’m obviously expected to know. There was a series of commercials for those newfangled phone-internet thingies where people were lined up and passing the product to the next person in line, and as each person got it they did something to the screen to show how it was personalized for them. I didn’t know who most of them were.

I’ve been an old fart since I was a teenager. I never have and never will, do pop culture. I don’t want to be like the people on Jay walking (Leno) who know all of the judges on American idol but can’t tell you how many Supreme Court Justices there are or name even one of them.

So, don’t pout. CELEBRATE!!!

Congratulations on reaching adulthood. Sucks doesn’t it?

Yeah, I think that was me too. However,

Despite the huge presence and influence of TV, it does not define or contain our culture. In terms of arts and entertainment, at least, as long as you’re paying attention to and involved with the areas that do interest you, it’s just fine that you’re not in touch with others. You’re still part of the culture.

I believe I also picked out Puff Daddy in that commercial too, which ought to give a clue as to how old *I *am…

I recognized Martha Stewart and Donald Trump. I might have gotten a few more if it weren’t for my cataracts.

I’m 23 and I only recognized Martha Stewart and Donald Trump. People always did say I was old for my age. :dubious:

Remember how everything was better in theold days?

One of the reasons my wife and I watch The Soup is so we can keep up at least a little bit with who’s supposed to be current. Also, it’s funny as hell.

He’s the Cocoa Puffs cereal mascot, right?

I never cared for celebrity pop culture. The only countervailing force is that while hobnobbing outside your immediate social circle it can be useful to pretend to care about certain celebrities. Being completely unware of some Jersey Shore whore is a form of ignorance that can have social consequences in certain settings.

The tricky part of this era are all the 15 minuters who appear suddenly and then disappear just as fast.

Good one, Chimera!

I always say, some of us are born old fogeys

and some have old fogeyness thrust upon them.

also, turn that music down!
