Thanks, I finally figured that out. It wasn’t a problem until “timeline”. Didn’t care if people saw what I listened to but to categorize them as my favorite bands and just dismiss all my local music was horriffic!
In a happy turn of events, while cleaning up Facebook I found a link to the SDMB playlist and was able to load and save it. Then I added all the “newcomers.” If anyone wants a link to the playlist on Spotify send me a PM. I’d post it here but the link contains my real name, and she doesn’t like to associate with ZipperJJ.
Spotify is free and open to all, btw.

Good list. I like D12, De La Soul goes without saying, Intergalactic is a great song.
This thread should be titled, “Let’s name some great hip hop” instead of top ten songs. Top Ten Hip Hop songs is just almost meaningless to me. Toooooo many to list are awesome.
No love for Canadians? “Crabbukkit” by K-OS must not go unmentioned.
I think Drake has a monopoly on the Canadian rap PR. Actually, someone listed “Crucial” further up. My K Dash contribution would have been “Commandante”. But Joyful Rebellion is a great album through and through. I was also going to add JRDN’s “You Can Have It All”, but it probably doesn’t qualify as hip hop. Same thing with most of K’Naan’s music.
I had a really hard time naming just one K-os song, but I didn’t want to spam the list with the entire Joyful Rebellion album
Hmm. I love love love “Uptown Girl” but the mp3 is labeled alternative, and I don’t know much else about the band; I don’t think I’ve heard any other of their songs but “Crabbukkit.” I guess I can see it being hip-hop.
He’s considered a hip-hop artist but he really fuses a lot of different styles into his music. Here’s a pretty good variety:
Love Song - great hip-hop flow, great beats, scratching, kung-fu dancing
Man I Used to Be - old-school R&B groove
Hallelujah - accoustic guitar ballad (not a cover) – the only two instances I could find on youtube have been copyright blocked, but if you can dig it up, it’s worth a listen
I’d actually recommend both his Joyful Rebellion and Yes! albums wholeheartedly, though admittedly, I haven’t heard much of his earlier stuff.
Protect Ya Neck - Wu-Tang Clan
This Can’t Be Life - Jay-Z, Beanie Sigel & Scarface
Dirty Money - Clipse
Steve Biko (Stir It Up) - A Tribe Called Quest
Double Trouble - The Roots & Mos Def
Things Done Changed - Notorious BIG
Jurass Finish First - Jurassic 5
Ms Fat Booty - Mos Def
One Mic - Nas
Liquid Swords - Gza
This is all older stuff, but if you’re not into the hard rap stuff, this might be up your alley. Hypnotic stuff.
MC 900ft Jesus
If I Only Had a Brain (factoid: video directed by Spike Jonze)
If you like the harder stuff, like me, try Young Bleed. I like southern rappers that mumble out cool lyrics
Bounce, Mob, Skate (youngbleed only raps second verse, but it’s worth it…great lyrics, just stop listening after that)
I doubt I can even name ten hip-hop tracks.
Does Evidence’s “Solitary Confinement” count?
How about Gil Scott-Heron? Can I nominate “B Movie”?
Yeah, I’m ancient. Deal with it!
EDIT: or are those at best rap and not hip-hop? :smack:
Heck, that’s one of the best things ABOUT hip-hop.
Hip-hop is not just rap.
This is agonizing. I think I have more of a top 50 list of favorites. There are at least 40 others that could replace these as favorites. Except ‘The World is Yours’. That stays.
The World is Yours - Nas
Nas is Like - Nas
Reunited - Wu-Tang
Rappaz R N Dainja - KRS-One
Passing Me By - Pharcyde
Broken Language - Smoothe tha Hustler
Get Back - Boot Camp Clik
One Day- Jeru tha Damaja
How Big is Your World? -Median
Face Off - M.O.P.
