YouTube, Mac OS X, and Chrome

This is an “is it just me?” question.

I use a Mac, and Google Chrome is my preferred Web browser.

I also spend a lot of time on YouTube, listening to music.

I’m growing increasingly frustrated with this combination, though. It seems that, half the time, the audio and video on YouTube videos are out of synch, usually by about one second. For many videos, this isn’t that big of a problem, but I occasionally go on binges of watching videos of drummers, and there are few things more annoying to a musician like me than trying to watch a drummer while the sounds of his/her hits arrive after I see the hits. Or seeing a video that focuses on the singer, and the singer’s lips aren’t matching up with what I’m hearing.

For a while, I thought it was a problem with my Internet connection. But one day, after giving up on trying to watch certain videos, I tried watching those same videos in Safari, and was interested to find that everything was in synch. Switched back to Chrome … out of synch. Tried Firefox, and everything was in synch. Back to Chrome … out of synch.

Then I switched over to my Windows laptop. Watched the same videos in both Chrome and Internet Explorer, and everything was fine. Back to Chrome on my Mac, and it was back to “out of synch”. Clearly, this wasn’t a problem with my Internet connection.

So my question is for other Mac users who surf with Chrome. Have any of you noticed this problem? I use AdBlockPro with Chrome, and thought that might be causing the trouble, but disabling ABP on YouTube didn’t solve the problem.

I find this situation especially odd, considering that Google owns both Chrome and YouTube.

Could you link to a video that is out of sync for you?

There is a known bug in Chrome that causes this problem. It affects Windows too. It only happens to some users, and appears not to have been fixed.

Well, I’m glad that it’s at least a “known bug”. I sincerely hope it gets fixed eventually … as a musician for whom timing is of the utmost importance, this bug is downright maddening, and makes so many musical videos completely unwatchable for me.

You can try using this site to try and adjust it. A bit inconvenient, but it will solve your problem.
