You've been out of the office for a few days; What's missing from your desk?

Missing? I wish. My desk was the ‘mess desk.’ If they didn’t know where something went or who it belonged to, they’d toss it on my desk. I apparently was the only one who could ferret out that the box of pens went in the cabinet next to the other pen boxes, or that the box addressed to the manager actually went to the manager. I hated taking vacation.

The valuables are chained down or otherwise go home with me. Everything else stays here, and generally doesn’t go for walkies. I actually get more dust bunnies. And scribbled on post-its, I swear those things BREED around my keyboard and under my monitors. :dubious:

Was it a red Swingline stapler?

At first, I read this as “gun” and wondered where you work.

I used to buy my own pens. Nice ones, not those cheap Bics the company bought that are a dozen for a buck. Had to start keeping them in my purse!

I thought you died.

Nothing - everyone here is pretty scrupulously honest. In fact, I have a pile of change on my desk that has been here for several years.

My Double Mesh Strainer.
A chef’s most used tool is their knife… not the Saucier! A Saucier’s most used tool is a strainer or a Chinois . Our kitchen has plenty of chinois but I bought my strainer, and every one loves to use it! After my days off, I have to hunt that thing down, cause it could be anywhere. The Exec. Chef finally bought two, but mine still gets used. ARRGGHHH! #%#^%&!!! I don’t touch your personal tools, stay the &$%#*&@# away from my strainer! It doesn’t fit in my knife case, so I do my best to hide it, to no avail. They still find it.

Tears of misery.

Fresh donut crumbs.

They are mysteriously replaced with stale donut crumbs.

If the last time I was away for a couple days is any indication, my keyboard, mouse, and monitor.

They were kind enough to leave me the computer, though. Considerate of them, I suppose.

IT and Facilities refuse to acknowledge that they were even on my floor while I was gone, much less actually touching my desk. I work on the same floor as the trainers; they’re a bunch of kleptos anyway, so I have no doubts about where the items went.

Was kinda frustrating having to go use the public PC we keep in the break room for employee use to sign in to my own remotely while I waited for IT to scrounge up replacement parts, though.

Get this.

I was out of the office for five months on leave. During this time, the office MOVED. All my stuff was packed up and moved for me, and put in my desk for me. So, when I got back, I thought most of my stuff would be gone.

Everything was there. All my pens, even, my stapler, my scissors, my white-out, my tape dispenser, my calculator. All my books and desk knick-knacks. Everything.

I must have the world’s most honest coworkers…

I buy or bring in my own mechanical pencils and pens. I can track down an offender in a flash.

But, really, the folks in my office are really good about leaving the stuff on other people’s desks alone.

It’s so bad I can’t describe it.
I had one guy go through my desk while I was standing there, in front of him, shouting at him.

He didn’t even look up. :smack:

I keep nothing of value, & no personal items other than a very oold radio, at work.

The only thing that’s ever been missing from my desk after a few days’ absence is my stapler. I’d taped my name on it, too! I never did find the stapler thief. I have an office but I never close the door or lock it. My status is very junior and I need to keep my computer and files available to my supervisors, so I guess I’m lucky that’s all that’s been snitched.

It would be impossible to tell - I am not a tidy man.

I’ve never had anything missing from my desk when I returned from vacation. Ever.

And in nearly three decades either in the workforce or as a graduate TA, I’ve had an office of my own for about 11 years, and have had officemates or been in an open-floorplan situation for about 18 years. (Currently the latter.)

I can’t think of anything that’s disappeared in my absence. We’ve got semi-open cubicles, so we’re one small step away from an open office plan. I’m willing to bet that when I’m not there, my chair is sat upon occasionally during lunch, and I’ve found the odd soda can at the end of the desk/table/counter thing.

Just this week, I solved a mystery. Someone kept putting a skinny sharpie at my sign-out board (we each have one at our desks) - I don’t use the skinny ones because they seem to dry out too fast. I have a coffee mug with 3 fat ones right above the board. Still, the skinny one kept coming back. I found out the Greg was the culprit. He thought someone was swiping the skinny, so he was taking care of me. I showed him my mug o’fat sharpies and now he understands. And I’m no longer going crazy wondering why that stupid marker kept showing up…

I get extra stuff left on mine. Stupid pranks.
Once a jar of instant coffee that was upsied down with the lid loosened. So when I went to move it out of the way I got brown powder stains all over my work and the carpet and the chair. Ha ha.

You bastard. I’m a home cook who’s addicted to new kitchen gear, and you had to go and show me that website…

As for my desk, my stapler is bound to wander off, even though there’s an electric one right next to the copier, because other people seem to jam that thing up and then can’t figure out how to “fix” it.

My magnifying bar. Everyone wants one, but nobody buys one but me.
