Seriously, men and women alike extend their hands in greeting, and those who are greeted clasp the proffered hands in response. If someone doesn’t understand or appreciate (or wish to participate in) that cultural gesture, fine – but it’s absurd to extrapolate theories about would-be rapists and sexual aggressiveness just because it icks you out.
No woman I know, either myself or others, is offended or bothered by a man offering his hand in friendship or greeting. Barring some orthodox religious or cultural objection, I can’t imagine this is a widespread issue. I sure as hell hope not.

Not necessarily, only the probability that she might be a prostitute is increased versus the probability of the woman that refuses to have public physical contact with men. You seem to want to cast all women into whores or non-whores. The truth is things are rather varied and most people observe many factors about people when they make judgements. Why not embrace the idea that all women deserve respect not the treatment usually reserved for whores because of their (usually) degraded social status?
This handshaking thing is so fucking stupid. There is nothing wrong with a man offering a woman his hand. There is nothing wrong with the woman politely declining for religious reasons. Anyone who would throw a hissyfit about that and insist that she do it anyway is an asshole. Why do you think I was so offended by the gesture? I was not a prostitute, but they were treating me like one. It was highly insulting. That’s why the gesture is so disgusting. You can be a perfectly respectable woman but some asshole comes around sticking out his dirty hand and someone can see it and wonder if you are for sale. It simply not right. In retrospect, I sometimes wish I had stabbed some of those men, but the past cannot undone. I fight so that other young women do not have to face that humiliation.
