I need a translation from Diary of Anne Fank. Don't think it's German, because I already ran it through Babelfish that way and came up with zilch. Oh, it was hard to read, so the parts in (parenthesis) are what it might of said as a oppossed to the word before it. I mean, um. . . I (eye) = either "I" or "eye".
Anyway, here it is:
Quote:
Die is cen foto, zoals ik me zou wesen, aieyd ( aleyd ) zo (zd ) le zyn.
Dar nad iu noy wet ean uans om naar Holywood te komen (women, xomen ). Maar tegen (begen) woordig (vordig) zie ik er jammer ger oey meesbal anders uie.
Can anyone help?

It "speaks" like Yiddish. Anyone out there of the Tribe fluent? I'm not, although I'm half German, and all Jewish. No Yiddish was spoken at home......

Looks more like Dutch to me. Didn't the Anne Frank thing happen in Holland? Where's Br'er Coldfire? He would know.

I'm asking this for a friend, and she really wants to know. Anybody know of an internet translator that does Dutch or Yiddish?

It's badly misspelled and garbled Dutch, or an older form of spelling, which is why babelfish won't help you. Definitely Dutch though.
.
"Die is cen foto, zoals ik me zou wesen, aieyd ( aleyd ) zo (zd ) le zyn.
Dar nad iu noy wet ean uans om naar Hollywood te komen (women, xomen ). Maar
tegen (begen) woordig (vordig) zie ik er jammer ger oey meesbal anders uie."

I think it might actually go: Die is een foto, zoals ik me .... alleen? zo ? zijn.
The section 'om naar Hollywood te komen' is correct.
Maar tegen woordig zij ik er jammer' is also ok. Many of the rest of the words are old forms I'm not familiar with or miscopied or 13 year old spelling, perhaps. But with these pieces context is trouble.
It's really garbled (many of the words are odd, where did you get this excerpt? fax?) but she is explaining something about a photograph and somebody coming to Hollywood. The last sentence is mostly understandible: "But presently I unfortunately see him..."... Ugh never mind. Have Coldfire give this a shot. I'm not helping much.

A friend said she got it from the book. It was supposedly the caption to a picture, and I assume that it was handwritten.

It's Dutch. I have a vague memory of reading a translation of it once, in a commemorative issue of the Diary. It's something like, "This is a photo of me at age 11. I think it makes me look like a Hollywood star." Or something like that. I tried looking on one of the many Anne Frank websites, but no luck.

One of my co-workers is from the Netherlands,
and she reports the following:

"This is a photograph, as I would like to be"

(the next several words are unintelligible:
aieyd so le. Dar nad iu noy wet ean uans)

"...to go to Hollywood. But recently I
unfortunately look different"

End

I have the Critical Edition of Anne Frank's diary, which was prepared by the Netherlands State Institute for War Documentation. It includes a lot of interesting stuff about Anne and her diary, mostly as ammunition against those Holocaust Didn't Happen people. Anyway, it translates this particular passage as, "This is a photograph of me as I wish I looked all the time. Then I might still have a chance of getting to Holywood [sic]. But at present, I'm afraid, I usually look quite different."
