When does one lose his/her newbie status?

I am just a little curious. I have a few hundred posts to my name but am not real sure if I still fall into the newbie status. I see a couple of posters with over 5000 posts and two or three with over 10,000 posts. Will I, and the other posters with a low post count, always be relegated as newbies?

This has already been discussed a number of times. You might want to do a search.

And IMHO, if you are concerned about whether you are a newbie or not, you're a newbie.

I'd do a search but everytime I try to search the board freezes up for me. I did let one search complete itself but it took a little over 2 hours. Never again will I try searching here.

Oh, don't mind Greenie. She's always grumpy.

FWIW, I recognize your handle (which I quite like, by the way), and I've seen you around enough to be relatively familiar. So I'd say you're more or less a "regular".

I've not seen your name before Exgineer - but I've been at work for the last 5 weeks (no, seriously) and not lurking so much - perhaps that's all it is: Familiarity.
Dorkusmalorkusmafia's handle came up in a conversation last week (Therefore: I dope too much.) so for me he's no longer a newbie. Doesn't mean I'm not though...

If you're gonna get all scientific about it, I'd say that you would have to factor in the "Registered:" date and not just the post count. In fact, as far as "newbie status" goes, I'd say that the registration date should have more weight than post count.

No. I'm not biased!

You stop being a newbie when you no longer feel that other users are out to get you personally and you no longer feel compelled to go out to get them, personally. Compulsive flame-war participants are newbies by definition.

Well, there ya go. When you've been around long enough that others make apologies for your rude behavior, then you're no longer a newbie.

You are no longer a newbie when more and more people respond directly to things you say in a thread.

Also, if you start a new thread and people stay things like, dorkus, I've noticed in other threads that you ..." then you're not a newbie.

Also, what Bryan said.

Hello, my name is Tupug...and...I'm a Newbie. (wipes brow and wrings hands) I've been a Newbie for as long as I can remember. In fact, I was born a Newbie. I've tried to delude myself that I can overcome being a Newbie but the truth is...I am not in control. Thanks for listening. I feel so much better now.

On my Board, I have received some comments from new Members which are along the lines of "I don't know if I should post in thread X, since I'm new", or "I don't know if I should start a thread since I'm so new..." Bah. Don't worry!

Oddly, I think an off-the-cuff answer here earlier is quite accurate - that is, if you are concerned about your newness and post count, or duration on the Board, then you are still a newbie.

Besides, you could also argue that you're no longer a newbie when you begin to recognize the posting patterns of other people - this means you've been on here long enougn and often enough to see different people's personalities emerge.

When one has more posts than Cecil. Currently, he's at 101.

Of course, that doesn't take into account the differing value of different Dopers' posts. Cecil's posts have a value that equals the average value of a non-Cecil post raised to the googolplexth power. Glad I could clear that up for you.

Oh, I know at least one person recognises it, because she said in a thread that my username reminded her of a drunk bum's ramblings.

Just like in an "in the same room" group of people, I no longer felt like a newbie when I made some friends here. My first female friend was Shayna and my first male friend was dropzone and I still cherish them both. Should you feel like making the distinction, they are my friends IRL too. One I have spent "in the same room" time with a whole BUNCH (Shayna...love you, my sister!) and one I haven't (dropzone, and I love him to death too.) So there you go. They are my friends, and I would go to the ends of the earth for either of them if necessary.

Beyond these, there are others. But they were the first.

Hi Flowerchild.....I missed your welcome thread, so this is my welcome post to you.

May you be happy in this garden. It has thorns, to be sure...but on the whole, it has flowers.

6,000 times? Huh. And after all of these years I thought I'd be a member of the club simply because I've been hanging out since April of '99.

But 6,000 posts? Really. Geez.

With whom should I leave a complaint? After all, I've never been invited to join a SDMB clique, private organization and/or ultra-secret cabal whose intent it is to rule the world. Don't tell me that I needed to actually participate to get points!

Good Lord, that's how I flunked outta school. Sheesh.

I'm just always curious when I talk to a new member..... I wondered how you found this message board. Feel free to ignore my very nosy question if you feel like doing so.

However, the information from tomndebb was very helpful too! Here I thought it was all about birds and bees when instead it is all about flowers. Who knew?

If you care about it you're a newbie. Just post, nobody cares about a number. Most people lost hundreds of posts after the SDMB winter, nobody really cared.

Well Scotticher, I went to www.bored.com and they had a link to www.straightdope.com and I spent the last 2 years in the archives preparing for the day when I could sign up for the beautiful SDMB that I had been reading but not not signed up for. And the rest is history...

I stopped caring about my post count some time ago (really!), but people still yell at me. But since I chat with quite a few Dopers, I don't know if I'm still a newbie. My guess would be no. Besides, I don't really care anymore, so nyaaah!

I began to think I wasn't a newbie after a few mileposts:

1. I found a reference to me in a thread I hadn't participated in.

2. Somebody started a Pit thread attacking me. I suppose that this happens fairly quickly to some a*hole posters, but in this thread other Members piped up and basically shut my attacker down before I even knew the thread existed.

3. Some Members have sent me private email.

4. I went to ChiDope and met people who recognized my unername. Or claimed to.

However, though I am no longer in the outermost circle of the SDMB, I do not feel I have arrived at the exalted inner circle, the pantheon, of SDMB Legends. I'm a utility infielder, just happy to be part of a championship caliber team.

My experience here lends me to believe that after you've engaged in either a penetrating question or answer, everyone's going to start talking about you and you can't claim newbieinity anymore.

I have no idea if I'm a newbie or not. I chat on AOL with a few dopers (not to mention names, don't want to drag anybody down like that). I've never noticed any other threads about me that I wasn't involved in. Although, I've visited about every day since I've registered, so. . .

I think you're not a newbie any more when you consider it a mortal sin to type hampster.

Wowie, I was spoken about off the board. You guys must have been talking about long ass stupid names or something. Hey! That's me! It didn't hurt until now. LOL Just kidding. So, I don't exactly feel like a newbie but I think I will feel less like one when I find a thread that mentions me that I haven't participated in as of yet.

Hello all,
We were supposed to get a welcome thread?? Huh? Er? Doh? Dag...I am definitely without question a newbie, but workin' on it!

Scotticher, to answer the "from whence I came question" I would have to chalk it up to taking a new job a couple weeks ago that had a winning combination- ethernet and TIME, I've got A LOT- anyhoo, a browse through the CityPaper online brought me back to a long forgotten gem of brilliance in the otherwise bland landscape of daily-columning. I was brought into the Cecil Adams fold, discovered SDMB, and am hooked. Help.

Argh, does anyone know the mystery of double posting?? That's gotta be a clue to distinguish those who "have it" from those who "don't."

Hey Highway, I think we should make a new club...it can be for those of us with fewer than 50 posts, and we can have, ya know, a 12 step program. Granted, if I keep posting at this rate, I'll write myself out of my own club, but it' a thought...
