Gah! I have too many...

Okay, let's face it. You've got lots of stuff. But there's probably something that you've got LOTS of. Maybe you're like Imelda and you love shoes. Maybe someone caught wind that you like frogs, and now you get gifts every year that include little frog figurines.

I've got two such things:

Bottles of lotion
strawberries & champagne (on desk @ work)
cucumber melon (on desk @ work)
Vaseline intensive care (in desk drawer)
vanilla floral (at home)
ocean breeze (at home)
cranberry with a hint of orange (at home)

I love, love, love smelly lotions. And when I find a scent I like, I've got to buy it. I can never get enough. And I change my mind on what scent is my favorite. Ergo, the billion bottles. I will NEVER use them all up as fast as I buy them, no matter how hard I try! Don't even get me near a Bath & Body Works....

Cookbooks
At least 15 Weight Watcher cookbooks
3 Cooking Light annual cookbooks
A handful of other healthy or light cookbooks

I could pretty much never buy a cookbook again, and I would have enough recipes to try something new every time I cook until the day I die. But it will never fail - I go into the WW room, I see a new cookbook, it MUST be mine.

And of course, by saying I have "too many" of these things, I of course mean that "I can NEVER have too many" of these things.

So what do you have too many of?

hmm... I have too many:
frisbees (I play frisbee golf. badly. and keep trying new discs)
asian spices (I cook much better than I play frisbee golf)
boots (army boots, steel toed boots, winter boots, hiking boots)
role playing game supplements (yep, I'm a geek that way)
knives and swords (I collect'em when I can afford it)
books (ma was a librarian. it obviously had an effect)

SF Books. I figure if I retire right now, I might be able to
read the ones I own which I haven't read yet in about 6 years, assuming I read one book a day and don't buy more - which I would.

Jigsaw puzzles. I have this fantasy about having a mansion with a ballroom, and putting out puzzles on the floor, so the entire floor is covered with them. That means I don't get rid of the ones I've finished that are interesting. I only have six or seven I haven't done yet, but over a hundred that I have.

Have other people found that when you're young you have time for stuff but no money to get it, and when you're older you have the money but not the time?

I have too many:

- Marinades. Yes, marinades. Strange? Probably. I just like having a selection of marinades. Is that so wrong??

- Plastic grocery bags. I don't throw them away. Cause you never know when you might need em.

- Frozen meats. This is too keep up with all the marinades...

OK, I'm done.

Ooh, we've got lots of plastic grocery bags, too. I have a cupboard under the counter that holds them. Sometimes it gets so bad that the door won't stay shut.

Then I switch to paper grocery bags - until the same thing happens with them!

Ball caps. I acquire them somehow. I don't buy 'em cause I hardly ever wear 'em but I've got a lifetime supply. If only I had the same problem with sunglasses. Or beanie weenies.

Children.

When I actually count them, there are only two. But it seems like lots more some of the time.

You think you have too many cookbooks? My mother had every freaking cookbook known to man. Everything from your standard Betty Crocker and Joy of Cooking to the Chocoholic's Dessert Cookbook and the Jewish Bread Cookbook. There had to be at least a hundred of the damn things. Any thing you wanted to make, she had a freaking cookbook for it. And she kept acquiring more. She got them on Ebay, she bought entire big box lots at local auctions just because they had one or two cookbooks in them. She passed away over a year and a half ago, and to this day there are nine big'ol packing boxes filled to the brim with cookbooks out in our garage. Just.. cookbooks. So.. many.. cookbooks. My entire family is a bunch of packrats. We keep everything and never throw it away, at the same time acquiring any cheap little thing that looks like it might be vaguely useful or interesting to have. So we have too many of... pretty much everything.

Old magazines. Anybody miss the reviews of the first batch of 10 MHz 286s? I'm trying to remember to take a handful out to the trash whenever I leave the house.

Heh, me too. Also:

-- Bits of paper with academic-type scribblings on them

-- Library books I ought to read, but probably won't

-- Envelopes of photos (I have a brand new album that I keep meaning to put them in, but the task is daunting)

-- Old shoes

-- And general useless clutter

Things to make the house smell nice, like candles and oils. I have a lifetime supply and every intention of buying more at the earliest possible opportunity.

Also hair gel, mousse and other assorted hair gunk, because there's got to be something out there that will make my curly hair work just right and do it easily.

I believe I may have too many sets of undies. Is it normal to need two whole drawers for your drawers?

Yep, can totally relate to plastic bags and photos.

Oh, books, definitely. I'm just now reading one that I bought about ten years ago. (It took a long time to ripen.)

Spices. Just received my last order ($80) via UPS today actually.

Shirts. I've got a closet full of them but I only wear the same half dozen or so.

A whole trunkful of old family photos, all the way back to tintypes, resides in my closet awaiting organizing. Now that I've got my digital camera I've got megabytes of more photos to do something with.

And now, Voyager

Up until Saturday I had too many sets of sheets. Technically you only need one pair of sheets until they wear out; two pairs if you want to be extravagant and put a fresh set on while the other is in the wash. For some reason I can just never pass up a good deal on sheets. I had blue toille sheets, purple striped sheets, neon green solid sheets, snowflake flannel sheets, Monster's Inc. sheets (I was so tickled to see them in Full size, I had to buy them,) yellow checked sheets and a sorta cheesy floral I used for the guest room.

Last weekend we upgraded to a King bed and I saved the toille sheets for the guestroom and donated the rest to Goodwill. Ok, ok. I also saved the Monster's Inc sheets in case my niece and nephew come to visit.

Holding at one set of sheets for the king...for now!

Books. Especially Photoshop books. I got one in the mail today, and another one's coming. I scare myself with Photoshop books. (But it's Photoshop!)

Cats.

Books. All kinds.

CDs, LPs ("records"—those black vinyl disks for those of you born after 1983) and tapes.

VHS tapes and DVDs.

Art supplies. Sketch pads. Rapidograph pens. Clay. Bottled glazes. (I am a potter and artist.)

Computers. A Macintosh G4 400, Mac G4 533, an upgraded Mac 8600 (upgraded to G4, that's still being worked on by the Mac Guru), an 1800+ AMD PC, and an old crappy 450 AMD PC.

That's too many computers.

Pairs of jeans. Waaaay too many.

And stuff related to Eeyore. A lot of people seem to know about my deep and abiding love for the donkey, so I have Eeyore mugs, Eeyore stationery, stuffed Eeyores, Eeyore books, Eeyore mousemats, and even a stuffed Eeyore in a mug, which I have to say I'm in love with. All you can see is his head peeping over the edge of the mug at you.

Too much stuff.

Nuts, bolts, washers, any type of hardware. Even when I get, say a new ceiling fan, when I'm done installing it, I save the "pocket bolts", 'cos ya never know when you might need just that bolt. Hinges, latches, doorknobs, you name it, I got a sh*tload of 'em laying around...

Suspiciously, one went missing, when I lived in a house full of professed Dire Straits haters.

dwyr, are you ordering from Penzey's?

I'm about ready to dive into their catalog and order - it always looks so nice!

I've also decided I have too many running socks. I get the wicking kind by DeFeet that have cutesy little designs on the ankle. I've got the one that has the sperm on it (Survival of the Fittest), the Plumber's Butt one (literally, it has an ass crack on the rear of the sock), florals, swirls, whatever. I've probably got two weeks' worth of socks, even though I do laundry every week. I can never get enough!

Clothes, period.

I have two closets full, and my storage room is overflowing. It's absurd, really.

My roommate asked me how many days I could go before wearing the same thing - I answered honestly - about a year I think.

Books. Like DeVena, I too need a new bookcase. And being a grad student, I can borrow stuff from the library for up to a year at a time; so, I currently have 46 books on topics like "the poetics of Dostoyevsky" randomly flung around my place.

Baseball cards. At least 10,000. But I won't sell or get rid of any of them. It would be easier to burn one of my books than destroy a baseball card, since most of my childhood memories are wrapped up in them.

Half-eaten packs of Spearmint Excel gum. I have about seven or eight on my dresser.

I'm sure I've got too many clothes, but specifically, shoes, handbags, and jackets/coats/vests.

I'd say CDs, but I make a point of selling the ones I don't listen to, so all 400 or so are pretty much essential.

Houseplants... I need a bigger place to accomodate them, but then I'd just get more!

I'm embarrassed to tell everyone just how many bottles of shampoo and conditioner I have. They're filling up a storage caddy in the shower, a rolling cart next to the shower, and I put 3 or 4 sets in the linen closet to get rid of the overflow. I have shampoos and conditioners for color-treated hair, for frizzy hair, etc. I think I need a 12 step program.

Penzey's! You bet, I love that place. Their turnover is high so their spices are the freshest you can get. Unless you grow your own that is. I unpacked the box last night after work and had to open each container to smell. Wonderful stuff! I got Vietnamese cinnamon, crystallized ginger (delicious), lemon grass, galangal, chives, green peppercorns, curry powder, kala jeera, peppermint, taco seasoning, Foxpoint seasoning, msg and a few empty jars. Penzey's threw in a free sample of pasta seasoning.

I have eclectic tastes.
