As a still-relatively-new and thus cute and cuddly newbie I tend to agree with you, but I'm not really sure what you refer to. Maybe I'm getting used to the way things go around here, but on the whole people are fairly nice to really nice. The few exceptions are not so dominant that they scare people away.

But it is true that some people seem to be personally offended if they say something and some poster dares to say something that doesn't agree with that. Even worse, some people seem to take offense if a poster has the audacity to say something that doesn't agree with their own knowledge. I'm all for divergence in opinions, which makes for lively debate, and I'm open for corrections in misconceptions, but you can at least give the appearance of being civil and gentle in your responses. We're all human and we all make mistakes. (insert joke her)

There is nothing to be gained from the input of, say, the Christian right Jesus-nazis in threads about homosexuality or when the topic is other religions. They have nothing worthwhile or original to contribute. However, as a general principle, the OP is probably not that good of an idea.

I agree with Weirddave and the OP. Say your piece when you have something to contribute to a discussion, whether it is in agreement or not. If it isn't in agreement, make it clear why you don't agree with others, without calling names or any other behaviour that would get you sitting in the corner in kindergarten. It really isn't that hard; attack the argument, not the poster. Then we can all live happily ever after in pink fluffy bunny land.
