Look at my mysterious orange box

Isn't it pretty? It's right there, next to my user name.
I was viewing VIEW FORUM LEADERS just because I couldn't remember having done so. Below that is a list of members, done alphabetically, and I was perusing that when I remembered that in every forum I've seen,I've never seen another orange box with a check in it.

So I whizzed down the members list just looking for other orange boxes, until I got somewhere in the Cs, whereupon I was foiled by the THIS PAGE IS TOO BIG,blah, blah, sign. Still there were quite a few names there, and mine was the only one with an orange box.

To what do I owe this distinction/badge of shame? What do the white box and blue box mean, also? Do the mods and admins have me marked as a troublemaker to keep a close eye on?

Well I'll be. I've never seen that page before. What's the point of it?

The blue boxes show who's oflline, the white who's online.

For me the box next you your name is blue.

When I roll the cursor over the orange box, I get a note saying you're invisible, meaning you have elected not to appear in the "who's online" list. Lobsang's white box, in contrast, says he's online.

Can you point me to where the option is to turn invisible on and off? I can't seem to find it after the upgrade.

If blue means offline, then why would you see mine as blue since I was obviously online? It should have been white.

I have webtv+ and maybe that has something to do with it,although I can't think why it should.
Anyway, thanks Lob;it'll be interesting to see if everyone sees it as blue.

any mods,admins,please weigh in.

Yours is blue for all but you because as Ed said you are set to 'invisible while online' meaning you appear to be offline for others, meaning we see you as blue.

Well, someone(Ed,is that you?) seems to have changed my box to white, although I went to userCP and like Berkut I couldn't find any off/on invisible option.

At any rate, thanks a lot Ed and Lobsang, although I admit to being somewhat miffed at not being "special."

The only option I show is "Allow vCard Download".

Can anyone else see that option where Ed pointed it out, or is it just me?

I've never seen it before either, but it appears to be a complete list of moderators and people who have subscribed.

I looked until I felt as though I might start pulling hair out. I can't find it. It was an option in the previous version, but it seems to have been misplaced.

I see from your profile that your "Invisible Mode" is currently set to "No". Which means your little box will change to white when you're online and blue when you're offline.

The Login and Privacy link should give you an option for "Use Invisible Mode". It's the option immediately above "Allow vCard Download". Not sure why it doesn't show up in your options.

I wonder our "Charter member" group is set to disallow it for some reason. Any guests care to look and see if they have the option?

T'ain't there for me, either. vB3 has sooooo many options and permissions -- I'm with Berkut, and wonder if the wrong toggle got flipped for Charter Members, lol.

Now I know what people mean when they say "Membership Has Its Privileges"!

Assuming my membership has gone through, that is.

xash:

There is a little box above Allow vCard Download that is bordered in yellow, with a purplish something inside it that's too small for me to make out. It blinks when I punch it and if I keep punching it the purple thing vanishes, but nothng else happens. It just blinks.
Is this possibly the button that's supposed to get me to the visible/invisible option, but isn't working yet?

Maybe there's a fly on your monitor screen. Or a frog.

Otherwise, I have no idea.

It could be a fly IN a frog. That would explain why it's so dark and hard to see.

Well,I seem to have hit a dead end. Thanks everyone. If they get this fixed I will try to get my orange box back so I can stand out from the crowd. And there's still a small mystery; no one (although I have to suspect Ed) has copped to changing my box from orange to white.

I didn't change anything. I'm sure there's some switch that enables charter members to see the options I've described, but it's Saturday morning, the techs are off duty, and I'm not about to mess with anything lest I kibosh the whole board.

As far as the "invisible" thing goes, isn't that option irrelevant to us here, anyway? Its purpose is to prevent one's name from showing up in the "Who's Online" list. However, members who choose to be "invisible" here are still visible to administrators and moderators.

So maybe the reason we're not seeing the option to be invisible in our CP is that the "Who's Online" feature is turned off.

No, "Who's online" appears to every user as the color of the check box.

And I found the setting by clicking on top link UserCP, then the side link Edit Options and it's my very top option, Use Invisible Mode.

So now I'm orange, at least to me.

You misunderstand. The "Who's Online" is a full list of who is actually on the site at that moment. It is not the same thing as the check box.

It appears on the forum home page under the list of forums, generally in the form of "Currently Active Users: X There are currently X members and X guests on the boards. | Most users ever online was XX on XX-XX-XXXX at XX:XX PM." ... followed by the names of each person on the site at that moment.

So I may never know who (or what) changed my box color to white. A helpful ghost in the machine? A rogue or insane mod/admin?

dantheman:

I go (a number of times) to EDIT OPTIONS: At the very top is the little yellow box. To the right of that is the LOGIN&PRIVACY sign, but you can't click on that(editorial you) and clicking on the yellow box just makes it blink and produces nothing more.

Directly under that is the vCard stuff.
Is that the way yours is set up?
Things like this drive me loopy. I only have so much patience. Like the little driver in HIGH ANXIETY says when he's trying to lift the big trunk; "I got it,I got it,I got it...I ain't got it!"

Nope, I don't see that yellow box at all. I'm using Opera as a browser, but I also checked IE and still don't see it.

Below the top banner (User CP ... Log Out) are two columns of boxes. The one on the left, the skinnier of the two, is headed "Control Panel." The one on the right, the much larger one, is headed "Edit Options: dantheman."

Below that "Edit Options:" heading is "Login & Privacy." To the direct left of that, below "Control Panel," is "Settings & Options."

Now, there is a small icon to the right of the "Edit Options" box, but it's just something that allows you to collapse or expand that particular box.

Too bad we can't do images here, because one of us could do a screen shot.

If you are using IE, it's probably shrinking the image to fit the screen. If you hold your pointer over the image, a button will appear in the lower right corner. Press it, and the image will appear full size and you can scroll around.

Just to add to the mysteries of the little box - out of sheer curiosity I clicked on two of them (one of them was a blue box next to Beeruser's name, the other I don't remember who it belonged to). Twice, I got sent to a link of what appeared to be a sports rankings page, I think a baseball league. Then I tried again, with another name, and got a "This URL is not valid" pop-up. I then tried clicking on the box beside every username in the thread, and couldn't get that webpage back. Isn't that odd? Anyone know if this was their homepage that I was accidentally getting to somehow?

I'm using Firefox in Linux, btw.
