Two things:
-
Many people have complained that the user title “Charter Member” under their names is too snooty.
-
SDMB member MonkeyMule, who works for a big NY publishing house, is trying to unload a bunch of books. (Don’t worry, it’s legit.)
Obvious solution: Have a contest!
So, as of now, we’re accepting entries for the Straight Dope New User Title Contest, or StDNUT Contest for short.
Rules:
-
Only SDMB subscribers can enter. No limit on entries but don’t get ridiculous.
-
Entries must be posted in this thread.
-
Proposed user title must be short enough that it could actually BE a user title.
-
User titles can be either generic (could be used for a whole member category) or tailored to a particular user. If the former, indicate what category you have in mind. If the latter, indicate the user. The user can be you.
-
You can express your opinion of previous entries but we get to decide who wins.
-
Monetary or, how shall we say, in-kind contributions won’t help you. OTOH, they couldn’t hurt.
-
Just kidding. Entries will be judged on the basis of literary merit and whether they make TubaDiva spray pop over the screen.
-
A user title involving Lynn Bodoni could be really funny. Or it could get you killed. Feeling lucky?
-
Contest ends whenever we lock the thread, which probably will be late Friday 4/2 or early Saturday. Winner will be announced Monday, probably. Maybe Tuesday.
-
Prizes:
[ul]
[li]Grand prize - big box o’ books from imprints such as Warner, Little Brown, Hyperion, Arcade, Mysterious Press, Aspect, Miramax, and Backbay[/li][li]1st prize - littler but still respectable box o’ books[/li][li]Three 2nd prizes, each consisting of one copy of The Journals of Eleanor Druse, on which Stephen King’s mini-series “Kingdom Hospital” is based, and one copy Beyond Infinity by Gregory Benford[/li][li]Five 3rd prizes, each consisting of an advance copy (complete with original typos) of Universe on a T-Shirt by Dan Falk and Distant Palaces by Abilio Estevez.[/ul][/li]11. We don’t guarantee that any of the entries will actually get used for a user title, but you never know.
- Put in here because who ever heard of a contest with eleven rules?
Let the games begin!
