I Quit!!

I have been at my current place of employment for almost 2 years as Reception. My duties included answering a very busy 15 line phone system, filing, faxing, mail sorting, and since December when the HR guy was fired, I was in charge of posting all job ads for vacancies required by managers, receiving and sorting of all resumes, as well as calling for interviews and reference checking. And, since February I've been "assisting" my useless co-worker. She would do nothing all day long, and scramble at 3:00 to get her work done. Her manager saw her scrambling and thought that maybe she should delegate some of her work to me. Never mind that I was busy answering a 15 line phone that was always busy, and disregard my HR duties, just pile more work on me that Useless should be doing.

But, being a hardworking multitasker, I took all this stuff on. Talking to my manager would have put me in a more difficult spot, considering the close proximity this co-worker was to me.

I hadn't been really looking for another job, but my fiance noticed a job ad in the paper that interested me very much. I applied on Saturday of last week, got a phone call Monday evening, had an interview Wednesday evening and was offered the job on Thursday. I took it. It is more money. It is not reception. It is a supervisory position within my background.

I gave my notice yesterday. Everyone was VERY happy for me. My manager congratulated me and let me off with 1 weeks notice.

Useless co-worker cried. She's going to have to do her own damn work now.

Congratulations. One of the great joys in life is that feeling that comes when you finally escape from the evil job. May you be an inspiration to others ensnared in the same situation.

Many, many congratulations. I've been blessed with a good company that has treated me well for many years now, but my wife has gone through a situation identical to yours in the past.

Just out of curosity -- now that working conditions with Useless are going to be a moot point, did you (or do you plan to) let your boss know why Useless was doing her scrambling, or are you going to let him find out on his own?

(Moo point, Hal, we've been over this. )

Congrats on the new job!
Must be a good feeling.
It's great your manager is being supportive of your decision.

The company is weird. Useless and I didn't share a manager. Out of 20 office employees, there are 6 managers. I told MY manager that she is one of the biggest reasons I left and why she is scrambling at the end of every day, but whether he tells her manager remains to be seen.

I mean...it's obvious to me and about every other employee that she does nothing. Her manager HAS to see it, he just has to. The second he leaves the office for site visits, she's no where to be found. If he calls her extension, 9 times out of 10, he has to ring through to reception and ask me to page her in the building. It seems to me that he's just chosing to ignore it.
