What is some stuff that most people don’t like very much that you like a lot?
Extra points if the people who don’t like them are fans of other stuff the creator(s) did.
If someone wants, they can start a thread called Am I the Only One Who Actually DOESN’T Like…? I would, but I don’t want to start two back to back threads like that.
REM’s album Out of Time is one of my favorites. I really think it’s great. I don’t like it as much as their earlier stuff, but it’s good.
AND I love the song Shiny Happy People! Yes, that’s right, I love that song!
Most fans of REM don’t like the album, and I haven’t met one who likes the song.
I also like their album Up.
One of my favorite movies as a kid was The Newsies. I was surprised to have recently looked it up on Rottentomatoes and seen that critics hated it. I still like the movie, too.
Shiny Happy People’s cool. The video sucks and it is more than a little cheesy but I still love to bob my head along to it.
As for me: I think I’m the only Hugh Grant fan that’s not ashamed to admit it. I know I’ve never met anyone else that’s admitting to liking him without some sort of qualifier.
I like Out of Time. Doesn’t that have Pure Wild Heaven and Half a World Away? Great songs.
No opinion on the others.
Ok, “frutti di mare” pizza, with lots of squid and garlic. If that’s not available, capers and anchovies.
Not to turn this into an R.E.M. thread, but most people I meet love “Out of Time.” Curiously, New Adventures in Hi-Fi is one of my favorite R.E.M. records, and that one seems to be the real whipping boy of their catalogue.
Weird, my impression was that OOT was one of their most hated. Peter Buck’s liner notes for their recent greatest hits album indicated that they didn’t really like it either. New Adventures in Hi-Fi is great too. Pitchforkmedia actually gave it a really good review.
I love every song on OOT except Radio Song. I also love the way it’s sequenced. Hell, I’ll go into detail on why I love it. For one thing, it showcases Peter Buck’s great guitar playing, even though his style is a little different than their earlier stuff.
Also, this is a good album to listen to when you’re driving on vacation in a scenic place. It really adds to the quality. In fact, you can almost get a sense of that from the cover, I believe it shows a road.
After Losing My Religion it then goes into the percussive intro to Low. An ambient song immediately following a pop song. I think the mood transition here is great.
Then it gets out of the mellowness of Low in the best possible way- with the intro to Near Wild Heaven. It works perfectly- it’s upbeat but not jarring.
The song is great- the background vocals bring this song to greatness.
Afterward, it again goes to the best song it could transition to- Endgame. Even though it’s only the fifth song, it feels like sort of an intermission after the highs and lows of the last four songs.
So, if Endgame is like an intermission, then Shiny Happy People picks things back up. I like the very sunny feeling of this song.
The next song, Belong, is transcendent. I think it would be the perfect song to hear while sitting in one of those omnitheatres, with african plains scrolling by on the huge screen.
The rest of the album is great too, and I don’t really need to go into any more about it.
Shiny Happy People is fantastic! I like Stand a lot too.
I know it’s not cool to like anything by Milli Vanilli but I like Blame it on the Rain quite a bit.
I’m not a big Star Trek fan but I really like the third movie - Search for Spock, but not as much as Wraith of Kahn. Search for Spock doesn’t really seem to be hated, it’s just no one remembers it.
And I seem to be the only person that likes Star Wars: Episodes 1 & 2. Not nearly as good as the original three (especially Empire Strikes Back) but they’re fun and have a vibe all their own.
Hi, my dopername is WhyNot and I love the movie Reality Bites.
I also like instant mashed potaotes. (Not as a replacement for real mashed potatoes, but as another unrelated sidedish - sort of like risotto is not a replacement for jasmine rice.)
I love really cheap, sugary “Girly wine” that comes in colors never intended by grapes. (But I’m getting old, and it’s starting to give me headaches when I drink it.)
I also like Corvairs. Really. One of my dads restores them. I learned to drive on them whilst getting high on the recycled exhaust. I’m sure they’re death traps, but they have a special place in my heart.
I am a near-thirty-year-old woman of moderate means who eats Kraft Macaroni & Cheese (right out of the pot I cooked it in) and drinks Boone’s Farm unnaturally-colored malt liquor–because I like it. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy an expensive meal and a shot of Cuervo Gold as much as the next girl, but I have my trailer-park side.
I like bad romance novels. I watch Titanic whenever I have a snow day. And yes, I also loved Moulin Rouge. I watch Smallville every week. I watched Roswell until they took it off the air. And I own a VHS copy of The Ice Pirates.
