That's Where The Cat Piss Smell Comes From....

Dear Gothlings in the Next Apartment-

I’ve been smelling cat piss for months. We do not own a cat, so we thought this was odd. At first, my husband didn’t smell it, so he thought it might be some strange pregnancy super-senstive smell thing. Then we had the baby and I could still smell it.

We thought it was the rug. Maybe the last tenants had a cat.

But it’s not the rug, is it, gothlings?

No, the smell comes through the wall. In fact, it eminates from your kitchen, which is just on the other side of our living room wall.

Today is extraordinarily awful.

What the fuck, gothlings? How can you live in there? How do you not choke on amonia fumes?

Clean that shit up!

I am filled with grrrr.

Yeeesh. How many cats do they have? Are you sure they’re not keeping a tiger in there?

ME

They have 2. They are cute. But, obviously, they need their litter changed more frequently.

FWIW-the aroma of cat piss comes from two sources: kitties and meth cooking. Be very aware if anything causes you to suspect the latter-the average lab has the power to pack a very large “B” and an even larger “oom”.

Ahh!!

The dreaded cat living in the wall having kittens…

uh-oh. One gothling confided a former difficulty with meth.

This would make more sense than the power of two kitties causing this much stink.

Would also explain why it comes from the kitchen wall, not the bathroom one.

And why I’ve been feeling very dizzy today when the doors are closed.

Um, what to do? I can’t call the police and say, “hey my neighbors are stinky, can you come check it out?” That would be very poor form if I were wrong.

What if I bake brownies and bring them over? Then I could, uh, investigate.

Do these folks have regular jobs-some other visible means of support?

Do they insist on going outside to smoke, even when it’s nasty outside?

Any evidence of chemicals such as carboys, other containers outside?

Lots of folks coming and going at odd hours?

Before anyone goes wonko, YES, there are totally legit reasons for any and all of the things I’ve listed. They also are what the neighbors have said they saw and didn’t put together every time I’ve gone out with the HazMat team to assist local LEOs in a safe lab breakdown and package.

I have three cats, and I assure you the smell does not go through walls. I think the lab is a possibility.

I think if you called the police and told them what you told us, they would make the judgement if it was something worth investigating or not. Meth labs are very explosive - you don’t want to have any regrets about this. Which reminds me - I have to make a call about an intact refrigerator I came across in a nearby back alley.

I realized that I didn’t give you a good answer under “what to do.”

If you think there is resonable likelihood of a meth cook taking place, drop an anonymous dime to local PD. Since you mentioned prior problems, the site may be under surveillance already.

Before anyone beefs the idea of infringing on the civil liberties of the neighbor-personally I don’t care if you want to cook or use meth. I do have a problem when your chemistry is poor and you set a home that you share with others on fire, or you manage to blow shit up. Then I’ve got to get involved to help prevent injury to others, and minimize the environmental impact of your science fair project gone haywire.

I would NOT attempt any investigation myself. Personally I’d call the landlord or property owner and report the cat urine smell- a landlord can enter a property any time without permission for a reasonable maintenance matter (and probably already know that cat pee smell is a sign of meth cooking). Since meth labs are not only a major fire hazard but create a smell and debris that can costs megabucks to get rid of, your landlord will take care of the matter fairly quick if they’re any good.

So that was yesterday. Can we have an update when there is one to give? Please?

Yes, please update. I would not have a baby around that shit. That’s frightening.

See, this is why I subscribe to this silly board. Where the hell else would I learn important stuff like this?

Do update us - I’m all freaked out now.

Maybe they are just lying to Al Swearengen a lot over there.

Seriously, if there’s even a chance it is a meth lab, I wouldn’t hesitate to take some action. Good luck.

Jammer

If you’re in an apartment, I’d make the first call to the landlord, and keep annoying him/her until something is done about it.

The cat piss smell slowly dissapated over the course of about an hour after they left their apartment.

It hasn’t returned yet…today.

What really weirds us out is that it is sudden cat piss smell. For example, it isn’t there at 1pm, but all of a sudden it is overwhelming at 3pm. Usually it happens at night.

They don’t have carboys or anything on their porch. One claims to be a hairdresser, the other is evasive about her job, if any. Mostly they keep to themselves. We have never seen the inside of their apartment. We know about their 2 cats because we have seen them in the windows. OTOH, they are very nice people when we do see them on their porch.

Next time it comes back, we will drop a dime to the local PD. Then maybe the mystery will be solved.

I was curious so I googled the cat piss/ meth lab thing and nearly every police site recommends calling the cops if there is a strong odor like the one you’ve described.

I’d call, and soon.

Interesting note - from a broker perspective… your landlord should be very concerned about this because any resulting damage from a meth lab or grow op is most likely excluded from his policy.

Stanky litter pan doesn’t go away that fast.

I wish you well, and hope this situation is resolved quickly and safely.

My 2 cents of wisdom is to not wait until “next time.”

So, assuming it IS the cats, how would this occur? ONLY at night, BOTH cats suddenly release huge amounts of cat urine, which dissipates to nothing by the next day?

I’m not buying it. You got yourself a meth lab there.
