He buried her alive

At least, that’s what David Couey is claiming.

Police are trying to confirm that.

I feel physically ill.

And yet another atrocious, horrendous, abysmal crime comes to the attention of the public, and they react in accordance with the script.

Yes, it’s a bad thing. Did you expect anyone to say anything else ivylass?

I heard he strangled her. Maybe he got bored.

I propose a new bill. You bury someone alive, we bury YOU alive.

:frowning:

Or if you’re in Indiana, we let you practice medicine. From an abcnews.com story in '02:

"He was convicted of kidnapping a college student and burying her alive. Now Gary Krist, M.D., has a license to practice medicine. Dr. Krist now works as a general practioner in Chesney, Indiana. Three decades ago, Krist was sentenced to life in prison for the 1968 kidnapping of Barbara Jane Mackle, a college student from a wealthy family. Authorities said Krist, then 23, and a female accomplice abducted Mackle, a student at Emory University in Atlanta, at gunpoint from a motel and drugged her with chloroform. They put Mackle in a wooden box with food and other provisions, and buried her in a remote area in Georgia. Police rescued Mackle 3½ days later, after her father paid a $500,000 ransom. Krist was captured off the Florida coast in a speedboat he had purchased with the ransom money. The crime became the subject of a movie of the week, and Krist himself wrote a book about it, as did his victim. In her book, Mackle described her reaction as she was buried inside the box. “I screamed and screamed,” she wrote. “The sound of the dirt got farther and farther away. Finally, I couldn’t hear anything above. I screamed for a long time after that.” After serving 10 years in prison, Krist was released and went on to study at medical schools in Grenada and Dominica, eventually earning a medical degree. The state of Alabama rejected his attempt to get a license, but the Indiana Medical Licensing Board approved him in December 2002. Indiana law does not prevent convicted felons from obtaining a medical license, and the state medical board put a number of restrictions on his ability to practice medicine. He remains on indefinite probation, and he must appear before the board every six months. He was required to submit to psychiatric evaluation, and he is not allowed to prescribe certain drugs."

I guess this is a strange way to look at it, but burying her is so unnecessary. I mean, fine, you raped her, you had to kill her to keep her from identifying you. That makes you one sick fuck.

But, why the hell do you go and bury her alive? What do you get out of that?

A sick puppy. I would like to know more about what goes on in their pointy little heads. Are there any books on the subject?

Ivylass, IMO you missed the worst part of that story. A child being buried alive is ghastly, yes, but this?

If this is true…then his family…knew. That their family sex offender had the kidnapped little neighbor girl in there with him. With them.

I personally find that much more appalling than “buried alive”.

Someone on the news postulated that he didn’t really, he’s just saying that to be able to claim insanity.

It won’t work. Even if it was true, juries are very, very unlikely to let him off.

Jackmannii, the Mackle kidnapping is what I thought of when I saw this thread title. I didn’t know the crook was a doctor now. Sheesh!

To continue this hijack…

I rarely even open threads like this, but I usually open threads of Dope Friends of mine, so here I am.

Why do so many people feel compelled to discuss these news stories in The Pit? Seems to me that when I started here, the Pit was used for flaming fellow Dopers, complaints about the jackassbooted mods and admins, and gripes about things that happened to Dopers personally. Now, tho, it fills up with political diatribes and comments of the popular horrible news of the week.

Can we get back to the legendary Pit of yore?

(Should we continue this hijack in a thread of its own?)

Brief comment on hijack: I always thought these threads were posted in the Pit so we could all call the sick fucks sick fucks.

I am pretty sure I saw that movie of the week about the woman who was kidnapped as a child. I remember seeing the woman in the coffin screaming!! No wonder I still have that nightmare!

These stories continue to amaze me. It amazes me that someone has the ability to actually do something like this. I am appalled and sickened by these actions.

I also have more issues with the family for protecting someone who is obviously as sick as this. Being a therapist, I would pray that people like this would get help. Unfortunately, prison does not provide counseling and ability to help sex offenders become less likely to reoffend. There is a definate problem in our system. Continueing to tell the police where you live does not stop you from reoffending.

Actually, I’d like to see a ruling on this. I’ve never seen someone get in trouble for cursing in MPSIMS.

Well, then, let’s just open up that head and scoop out that old crazy brain.

I thought such gut-wrenching horrible news that makes you want to go run and hug your kids belonged in the Pit.

After all, it’s not like we’re going to get into a debate on the best way to kill recently sexually assaulted 9 year old girls. So here we can vent and scream and beat our breast at the evil of some members of our society.

Since it would bring strong language, I thought the Pit was appropriate.

No. The Pit is for roasting people alive who don’t necessarily deserve it.

Maybe he couldn’t bring himself to kill her. Just because you’re a rapist doesn’t mean that you’re a murderer-- even the people we consider most heinous sometimes draw lines they don’t want to cross.

Probably, he abducted her with no clear plan of what to do after he’d finished with her. He then realized that he couldn’t let her live, but couldn’t bring himself to commit an overt act which would end her life. By burying her alive, he could “excuse” himself-- distance himself mentally from her death by not directly inflicting the cause.

Or, he’s just evil and wanted her to die horribly.

He was in a drug-induced haze at the time.

That’s not an excuse, mind you, but it’s possible he was not entirely aware of everything he was doing.

I keep hoping that this is the case. The thought that this little girl was buried alive is just too horrible. :frowning:

Assuming the trial will be held in Citrus County, it definitely won’t work. This is a relatively close-knit community that is heavily conservative. He’ll get the death penalty for sure.
