Smiley request...

What's the possibility of adding a thumbsup smiley? Like this one:

We have a winkie smiley, a smiley smiley, and a sticking out your tongue smiley. We don't need a Thumbs Up smiley. We need one to cover another emotion, like a pukey smiley.

A breakdown of smiley usefulness as I see it:

- Basic, useful for softening an otherwise smarmy or annoyed sounding post.

- One of the best smilies ever, often doesn't even need any text explanation.

- Star Trek uses, plus it's usefull for when you aren't sure of whether to use the roll eyes.

- Can be used as a thumbs up or for punctuating a bragging post.

- Self explanitory, no?

- Similar in use to . Can also be a great debate taunt.

:wally - Can't use it anywhere but Pit, messes up line breaks, sentimental value to some Dopers.

- Can't even tell it's a winking smiley

;j - Love it! Can be used in almost any situation since it doesn't really look like a HOJM.

- Similar in use to and

- Self explanitory, no?

- Not very useful. does a better job.

- Useful for pointing out TMI, blatant stupidity, etc... Very useful.

- Basic

I vote against any puke smiley.

It calls itself "embarrasment" (Sp!) Personally, I would have this replaced by "blush" and use it when receiving compliments.

I couldn't read the second link, but that first smiley is perfect. Not too "explicit" for the stuck up wim- sensitive dopers*, but it still gets the point across.

*Not that a smiley spewing animated technicolor puke across the page wouldn't be appropriate for some of the posts we have around here, though.

This one really is the most useless smiley. The wink kills it -- makes it look like you're joking when you call somebody a putz. If you are joking, then restricting it to the Pit is silly. If you aren't joking, it looks like a really lame attempt at an insult -- an insult not backed up by conviction. It needs a sarcastic face, not a winking grinny face.

We need jjimm's barfy and we should get rid of :wally.

;j can stay put because smilies don't need to make sense, but did you know the image is actually called happyyid.gif?

Check it out: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/...s/happyyid.gif

We need the "neutral" smiley - for all those times when you want to say "I'm on the fence" or "I can't decide one way or the other" or "I could care less".

In the same vein, a white flag one meaning "I'm bowing out of this thread now"

Perhaps because I want to end the hijack, or alternatively because it's proving the old adage about arguing on the internet (which I won't post here for fear of a flaming).

But I vote for a pukey smiley, non-animated. Just a green one with his cheeks puffed out.

The only proper puke smiley would have to have a little dog coming out to feast on the vomit. But SDMB does not need or want animated smilies, so no pukey boy.

Seriously, can we vote out some of the less useful or unclear meaning smilies? The wink, the embarrassed, and the wally either need a revamp or a retiring.

- Mostly found in Great Debates to initiate the thought that someone farted while posting. "Did you fart? Cause I sure didn't. Did someone fart?"

- Also normally found in the Pit where one debater is so burned, he puts on his #14 welder's goggles to avoid direct UV and IR rays. He's smiling because he can see again.

- "I just let my hand off the keyboard to smack that damned fly!"

- Used all over the boards to indicate that someone's coffee went cold/beer went warm.

- "I didn't get that fly. I hit myself in the eyeball instead. But it's okay, 'cause the damn fly is gone. . ."

- Used in General Questions in regards to good dental hygiene.

- Used when there's a lot of flies around one's head, and you can't take your hands off the keyboard to shoo them away.

- Normally used by those drinking, it indicates that the individual has left to praise the "Porcelain Goddess"

- Also used by those drinking while posting, to show the emotion when one realizes, "Hey, I don't remember eating that!"

- Again, one used when one realizes they've had too much, and will have to deal with the hangover.

- "Oh man, I hate hangovers."

I've been on these boards for five years, and that's what my introductory brochure to the SDMB mentioned, and I've always believed.

Ooh! We need a farting smiley!! I think a farting smiley would show even more derision than . If you don't like a post it would enable you to fart in its general direction.

It would also have been useful in a certain recent thread .

In another thread, people are discussing this topic:

Quote:
A federal appeals court ruled today that the president can indefinitely detain a U.S. citizen captured on U.S. soil in the absence of criminal charges, holding that such authority is vital to protect the nation from terrorist attacks.
There's probably no correlation between the dancing banana and this ruling, but let's not take any chances.
