Liberal's Prospective Suspension/Banning

Don’t know where this thread should be started, but it will wind up in the Pit anyway.

Lib -

Yes, the board is full of assholes. Yes, some of them make it their business to hit your hot buttons as hard as they can manage. And yes, you have some hot buttons.

But you are an institution around here. Please don’t leave. Make it a thirty day suspension, if you like - it may give you some perspective.

But you add a lot to the boards. I would appreciate it very much if that could continue.

I realize this will turn into ten pages of flaming you if the idiots think you aren’t around to kick back. But have a look, if you can, at who’s doing it and take a guess at their motives.

And if you still decide to leave, vaya con Dios. And thank you.

Shodan

Link?

I hope Liberal stays.

Link?

If we’re talking about a banning or suspension, since when did a poster get to decide which he’d get, or how long his suspension would be?

If we’re talking about a voluntary sabbatical, Lib has had a few of those, and come back. Any reason to think this time’s any different?

Christ almighty. What is this: please save me from myself? If you want to get banned, there are plenty of ways to do it. I can’t imagine that the mods would even want the authority to keep someone out voluntarily.

What was it that Khan said in Star Trek, TOS? Stay or go, but do it because it’s what you want to do!

I don’t always agree with Lib, but I have found him to be fairly level-headed… a great deal more than many of his detractors.

Lib, I hope that you’ll stay.

I’ve learned a lot by reading Lib’s posts. He has vowed to stay out of the Pit, however, so this appeal might fall on blind eyes.

In all fairness, that is 100% consistent with the Libertarian political philosophy.

Yup.

Please don’t leave Lib. I’ve learned so much from reading your posts. Further, I am ready to consider myself a disciple of yours so I can learn to articulate essentialism better.

Like Data in Nemesis, please don’t leave until you have taught me all that you know

I agree with this entirely*.

Lib’s asked for and received suspensions before, presumably to “save him from himself”. He takes time out all the time. Is there any reason he simply can’t exhibit some self control and just not post? Busy himself with other things?

Lib, I hope that you take a break and find whatever peace of mind you need. And when you come back, I’ll be prepared to disagree with you some more.

*holy crap.

I like Lib and think we agree on more things than disagree. That said, I don’t think this place is good for Lib. The frequent need for sabatacals, the way he takes much on here to heart, things like the announcement of his expected demise: all these add up to make me think that Lib might do well avoiding these boards, not just avoiding posting but avoiding reading as well. Though it may well be true that many (most?) high post-counts here might do well to follow the same advice, few give the impression of being so emotionally effected by these boards.

Ah, he’ll be back. He thinks he’ll be able to steer clear, but we’ll pull him back in. We’re like the Mafia that way. Enjoy your “vacation” from the boards, Lib. We’ll still be here when you get back.

Whatever. I think he’s a whiny, self-righteous drama queen and don’t particularly care if he stays or goes. Please note that instead of just sending an e-mail to a mod, he makes sure his request is posted so that everyone can see how horribly he’s suffering at the hands of us small-minded fools. Typical Lib attention whoring.

Bah. Tuba nailed it spot-on.

Word

What set him off?

IIRC, Lib has been on voluntary sabbatical before and returned in better form. Sometimes this silly message board can get to you. If you do go, old chap, do come back. I still don’t agree with much of your political position, but you’ve made me view some things from an alternative perspective, which is so worthwhile. I also left for a while, and your words when I was leaving meant a lot to me.

I bet you’d be surprised how much we agree on.

Interesting, isn’t it, how:

  1. He points out how likely it is that his request will be misinterpreted; and
  2. He nonetheless makes it publicly and ambiguously, instead of either making it wholly private or providing an explanation.

Whatever.
