1st Annual SDMB International Postal Rifle Shoot

Suggested by Cowgirl Jules and/or Martini Enfield.

Details and rules are to be nailed down as we go. As I’ve never done this, my suggestions are just that and are subject to change by anyone with better ideas.

  1. At the beginning of each round distance, target, and caliber range are agreed upon. For instance - 50 meters, target equivalent to NRA A9 7"x9" 3-7/8" Black
50 Yard Small-bore Rifle (sorry, I don’t have the metric handy), open sight, .22 LR.
  2. Please make sure you shout out if you don’t have the caliber in question. I’m guessing some of our friends outside the US may not have access to an AR15.

And/or we could do a variation of the Service Rifle match. 100 meters, open sight, standard military issue firearms only.

.22 may be the most popular (and probably the least expensive), so that may be the default for many people.

What say you? .22LR at 50 meters? .223 at 100? .308 at 500? .300 Win Mag at 1000?

Sounds like fun. Too bad I would not be able to attend. :frowning:

How about adding some handguns into the mix? A 1911 .45 ACP at 25 and 50 yards maybe? Or perhaps a 22LR target pistol (maybe a a Ruger Mk II).

Why was this posted in Cafe Society?

… being moved to MPSIMS, which I think is the proper forum for get-togethers.

Why not make it a little more generic as far as calibers? But keep the distances constant.

Say:

[ul]
[li]a rimfire rifle category[/li][li]a small open-sight center-fire category (of what range of calibers, I don’t know)[/li][li]a large center-fire category (open sights or scoped?)[/li][li]revolver[/li][li]pistol[/li][/ul]

But I’m thinking even that might get too specific and we’d have one or two people only in each category. Do we have that much of an interest to narrow it down that closely?

I have a PO Box, and I’m perfectly willing to refrain from competing in order to judge  besides, I’m really rusty with my preferred tool (.223 AR15) and my .22 isn’t even sighted in yet.

We’re talking about a postal match, Dennis, so maybe you can.

Ok, so far I’ve managed to mangle the title (leaving out “postal”), post in the wrong forum, do so without mod approval, and mangle the rules.

Perfect! Next I shall RULE THE WORLD!
Anyone know what postage from Australia would be like?

Ms. Jules, you must compete. Don’t worry about showing us up (never met a lady yet that couldn’t outshoot most of the men around her), we’ll survive.

If nobody else is there to watch each other shoot, what’s to stop someone from just standing 2 feet away and blowing the hell out of the 10 ring and saying they’re the new Carlos Hathcock?

Honor?

And ooh, how we’ll mock if we see pencil lead marks on the target!

Oh man, I’m game!

I would suggest one clarification, and make one note:

Clarification: I suggest that you have to shoot with open (“iron”) sights. If you’ve got a scope, that kind of takes the fun out of it.

Note: If possible, take pictures of the range and of your gun! That’ll keep a little honor in the game, and I’m sure we all want to see what you’re shooting with!

Oh, and 50 yards = 45.72 meters.

I’m game! This’ll give me a chance (read: “excuse”) to check out some public ranges around here. To whom shall we send our ‘results’ though? But in the meantime, I would agree with “generic categories”, as in:

[ul]
[li]Handgun (Pistol)[/li][li]Handgun (Revolver)[/li][li]Rifle (Centerfire)[/li][li]Rifle (Rimfire)[/li][/ul]

I mean, doubt everyone’s got something that will fit into certain caliber categories. But I do think everyone will opt to shoot with the gun they feel most comfortable with–me personally, my one carbine AR-15. Just my two cents. . .

Tripler
I believe I’ll be competing in multiple categories, thankyouverymuch.

In an attempt to quell potential world domination by somebody from shudder Arvada, I have added the word “Postal” to the title.

Dude…I thought this was our cyber-chance to go postal on things that irritate the living FUCK out of us. With high-power cyber fire power. My mellow has been officially harshed.

Count me in for all four, if I can find a decent range for the rifles. I believe I’ll be shooting

Handgun (Auto) - Either the Buckmark or the Hi Standard Sportsman
Handgun (Revolver) - S&W Model 28
Rifle (Centerfire) - So many to choose from…either the Garand or the Model 1906 Swedish Mauser
Rifle (Rimfire) - Ruger 10/22

Yeah, I didn’t want to poop in the OP’s thread, so I’ll let him make the call, but I’ll be competing in the four categories with:

Handgun (Auto): Charles Daly DDA .40 S&W (with a Sig Sauer 220 .380 ACP on another target to verify my results).
Handgun (Revolver): My “Security Six” clone of a Ruger GP 100 .357 Magnum
Rifle (Centerfire): My Bushmaster AK Shorty XM-15 Carbine
Rifle (Rimfire): I’ll have to borrow someone’s. . . aw the hell with it, now I have an excuse to buy a new rifle.

Tripler
Them’s my toys (not all of 'em, tho).

CURSES! I mean, “Thank you Frank

Is this the plan?

[ul]
[li]Handgun (Pistol)[/li][li]Handgun (Revolver)[/li][li]Rifle (Centerfire)[/li][li]Rifle (Rimfire)[/li][/ul]
What distance for handguns? Much over 25 meters and I’m useless

Rifle - 10 shots at 100 yards/meters? Or 10 standing, 10 sitting, and 10 prone?
Handgun - someone else make the call, I’ve never competed in a handgun match.

Cowgirl Jules volunteered to be the official scorer (thanks!)

OK, as the official scorer, email me and I’ll send you my PO Box address. Martini Enfield and other overseas dopers, if you can scan a good copy of your targets and email them to me, that will save y’all some overseas postage.

I’ve never competed in a handgun match either, and I’m really only good at that when I’m ticked off anyway. So I’m in for centerfire rifle for sure and rimfire if I can get it sighted in (it’s new.)

How about a deadline of the end of the month? Does that give everyone enough time? I know I can’t get to the range until next weekend myself.

I’ll join the close range shotgun competition. Where do I mail the confetti?

I am harshed because I don’t have a revolver or a rimfire. And I must ask where the black powder competition is. Us smokepolers have needs too, you know.

Actually, I could shoot the revolver comp with a cap and ball, as long as time is not a factor.

But I always saw rimfire as beginners choice. Sure, they are fun and cheap, but it’s like racing go carts. You can do it where allowed, but in the real world it’s never your first option.

Shoot, if you want to add a blackpowder competition, by all means, do it! Is the scoring the same?

I can do blackpowder pistols. I’ll be using a set of Uberti 1858 Remingtons.
