A while back there was a group of Dopers who were going to shoot a string and post the targets (see here). I’m not sure if anything ever came of that. What I do know is that I said I would participate, but couldn’t follow through.
I propose that we try to do it again, only this time we actually make it out to the range this time and post up some targets. If there’s interest, I might be willing to provide some small incentive, say, a fifth of your choice for the winner, perhaps?
Anybody game? We can negotiate the rules later if we get a critical mass of people that want to play. Of course, my real motivation is that I want a bottle of hootch, but it always tastes better when you earn it than when you buy it for yourself. How’s that for throwing down the gauntlet?
I’m in. I’m sure I’ll lose, but it will give me an excuse to get out to a range and shoot. I haven’t really been shooting in years, so it would be good to get back in practice.
Since I’ve never really shot at a real range before (mostly just in the back woods at my family’s camp, (don’t worry, we took proper safety precautions,)) someone should fill me in on the rules and whatnot. The page you linked to mentioned types of targets…I assume these targets can easily be bought at the range or online?
Also, I need to find a range around here…
A littl known fact is that the actual acronym is BATFE, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Fortunately for all invloved, I have none of them. More’s the pity.
I haven’t been competing over the winter so I’m quite sure I’m not going to be shooting very well, but count me in. Unless shotguns show up, I’ve never delved into the intricacies of scatterguns, alas.
I’m in! I always up for a competition shoot, although I don’t know how well I’m going to do given that I’ll be using WWI or WWII vintage rifles with iron sights…
I’ll put a side bet in with you, Martini, if everyone else wants to use high-falutin’ stuff. I’ve been trying to get myself in training for a Garand competition in May, anyways.
I’ll keep an eye on this thread. I’m likely to be in California before anything’s off the ground, and I don’t have a handle on any ranges or the shooting community out there yet. Still, I’d like to be in, if I can swing it. I have a new SKS I’d like to get some rounds through.
I shot in the 1st Annual SDMB International Postal Rifle Shoot (Same link as above) in the military/service rifle category with my M1 Garand. We shot our targets, mailed them in… and I lost to Bobotheoptimist. Congrats Bobo! with thanks to Cowgirl Jules for scoring.
I’d like to participate this year in the same category. It looks like Bobotheoptimist, Martini Enfield, and Diomedes would be my competition so far. I might participate in a pistol category depending on the rules. I’m much better with a rifle.
I’ll volunteer my services as a scorer/judge if needed.
I shot service rifle matches for a couple years before that contest, nearly a full year with the 03 Springfield so I was dialed in that time (and got lucky, to tell the truth).
I haven’t competed since last September and haven’t hardly shot at all this winter. Pretty sure I’m going to suck this time, but that’s ok, it’s an excuse to shoot.
I try to shoot in the Garand Match at Camp Perry as part of the National Matches every year. The Garand Match was in August and IIRC the SDMB shoot was around October.
I haven’t touched my Garand since then and offhand is my weakest position. But like you said it’s an excuse to shoot.
Standard competition range here is 10m; 25m is long range and anything beyond that is for Metallic Silhouette only. We could compromise on 15 yards as a suggestion, though.
