Extreme Ironing

Wikipedia (and a few other sites) describe the sport of extreme ironing as the activity of trekking to a remote location (via hiking, skiing, climbing, etc) and ironing a few pieces of clothing there.

Is this real? Do people do this?

Is there hope for humanity?

Joey

Well, they have a website http://www.extremeironing.com/

I have heard of it before, but I don't know if it is "real" or not. I mean these people did it, but I don't know if others do.

As long as they don't combine it with Breast Ironing, I think there's still a little bit of hope for humanity.

I don't think anyone takes it at all seriously, but the pictures on their website make for some dandy amusing desktops.

I saw a TV show (on BBC, I think) of an organized extreme ironing competition. About a dozen people took part, and several dozen more actually came to watch.

It involved running through streams with your ironing board, climbing a tree, etc.
Good, wholesome, outdoor activities, and most of the people seemed to be similing.(well, laughing, actually. )
All in all, I don't think any major damage was done to the gene pool. And it appears that some refreshment (=beer) stands made a profit that day.

Were I to compete in such a sport, I'd use a fire-heated rock as the iron, and another large flat rock for the board, thereby saving me having to lug the extra weight of the board and iron on my hike/climb/whatever. I'd probably also do a better job than all those folks using cold irons (since there's no place to plug in a cord), and I'd certainly do better than that girl who's ironing underwater.
