So, how'd you get your username?

I’m sure this has been done before, but I couldn’t find a recent thread on it. It’s probably been awhile, anyway, and we’ve had many new posters since then (including myself).

Mine comes from my college rugby team’s name, the Pygmies. The team got the name because, as a primarily engineering school, we were usually much smaller than our opponents. Our team colors were black and blue, because that’s what we look like after our matches. For the record, I’m 6’, about 230; pretty much the antithesis of Pygmy.

So, how’d you get your username?

It’s my universal user name. When I was a teenager I used “olives” in place of “I love you” (Olive you… get it?)… I still do this, it’s a big phenomenon among those who know me. Even my MIL signs her e-mails “Olives” on my behalf.

My birthday is March 4th.

Put it all together you have little olives marching forth… and you have lots of love. It’s silly, it’s loving… in a nutshell, it’s me.

My first name is boring, but starts with D, so I have a bit of a D fetish.
I love Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series, and wanted to take a name from there (my hubby uses Vetinari on x-box live). Only one good D character in Discworld, so…

It’s my birth name.

Elendil was a great King of Men in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth books. If he weren’t fictional, I’d be honored to be descended from him. Yes, I’m a Tolkien junkie.

Loved the word Threnody since I was very young. I find it emotive and beautiful. however it appears that a lot of other people also like the name as their username.

Angelfire came from an old email address I had threnody@angelfire.com, but one day it closed down and I had to choose another email address.

Ergo, threnodyangelfire was born. But I do, where I can take the name threnody.

I’m less creative than Least Original User Name Ever. You can probibly figure out where my name came from.

Pronouns, you are really friends, yes
'cause saying all those nouns over and over again can really wear you down…

I’m a bit of a foodie - Mange Tout = ‘eat everything’ in French - (pre-emptive strike: yes, I know you all thought it was Man Get Out, but it isn’t).

When I first joined the internets, I had this shiny dream that I would create the best ever website all about food and eating - I did create a website but frankly, it sucked donkey balls and there were already lots of other sites all about food, but the name Mangetout, which I chose at that time, has stuck.

I was thinking of changing it to Wet Pink Scrotal Chicken, but I probably won’t bother.

A Straight Dope column about vampires. I was never Goth but I was really into good vampire fiction and folk mythology back in the mid '90s, which is when I started using the screen name on other boards. (Of course I was hardly alone as it was the golden age of vampire fiction: There’d usually be three variations of Akasha, four of Lestat, three spellings of Dracula and even an occasional Buffy [the movie] inspired name.)

At the time there were no other Sampiros on the net to my knowledge but now there are dozens.

This particular iteration of me was the result of a brainstorm for a band name I needed to pick back in '99, coupled with the desire to shed myself of my previous and by then rather juvenile BBS alias, “DragonLord,” which I’d been using for about 13 years and which was derived from the prophetic name of the main character of a book I was writing at the time which, contrary to present examples, did not contain run-on sentences like this one.

On one multi-line BBS back in the 80s I also went by “Slartibartfast” which, as an Adams fan knows, is a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy character.

I should perhaps have mentioned that this was a print SD column (actually one I read in a book of collected Cecil columns). When I first started posting on SDMB I was Montgomery Ward Snopes (or Lancelot Snopes- can’t remember, I used both in the late 90s) but when snopes.com became big I had constant “you’re trying to mislead people into thinking you’re with them” junior-mod wannabes yapping about it (apparently they were unfamiliar with Faulkner) so I changed to Sampiro.

cooky173 is pretty well my universal username, the first website I signed up for already had cooky taken, (variation of Cook) and brought up alternatives, one was cooky173.

For the Dope I did mean to use a quote from the Wheel of Time series, probably Carai an Caldazar (For the honour of the red eagle). I forgot though, so I’m stuck with cooky173 (unless its possible to change your username?)

Huh? Wha? picks nose

Mine came from brutal, brutal honesty. I looked in the mirror (and broke it) and told myself, “Self, you are one unoriginal motherfucker.”

For the record, olives, I also got the mental picture of 4 olives marching around with the Underpants Gnomes song in the background. What, you had no song in the background? Um…neither did I

What can I say? Thedescription fit! Well, the beard is short and I’m a horse’s ass rather than having a horse’s tail, but still…

Just a play on my name…my husband calls me “Serafina” sometimes. Since I spell my name “Sarah,” I kind of anglicized it for use on the internet (makes it easier to get it as a user name…in most places, “serafina” and “sarafina” seem to be taken).

Y’all can always just call me Sarah if you want to!

I got mine by writing my first name in Chinese characters (using Japanese pronunciation), and then taking a meaning out of the (essentially) random characters. Though I think it’s relatively fitting.

久 - long time (old)
俐 - intelligent
鼠 - rat

On the old AOL SDMB, quite a few posters shortened by e-mail address to Monty, so when TPTB set up a forum outside of AOL, I went with that.

Mine is the name of a song by Queen

I don’t know if I’ve ever answered any of the “How’d you get your username?” threads on here, and if I have, it was a long long time ago.

Anyway, Kat just happened to be the name that I was using on a MUD and an rpg when I first signed up for email (I mean email where I chould choose my own email name, as opposed to email at school and work where you get stuck with something like firstinitiallastname@whatever). So I signed up for emails with Kat as part of the username (Kat by itself was always taken). For example, my aol username was katpower@aol.com (I’ve long since dropped aol, though, so don’t expect to find me there! ), where I found the SD AOL board (having been acquainted with the SD books some time beforehand). When SD moved off AOL onto the www, I finally got first dibs and snatched up Kat for myself here.

This is just about the only place I still use it, though. I consider changing to match one of my other usernames from time to time. Especially when I want to do a vanity search.
