I’m getting really tired of reading interesting Pit thread OPs only to find the first dozen posters “rating” the post for pitworthiness, whining about “recreational outrage” and generally acting like four-year-olds.
If you’re not interested in someone’s post, is it too difficult for you to freakin’ ignore it? Is it necessary to fill the whole damn thing with  and nitpick bullshit?
I know, it’s the Pit, you’re allowed to act like an asshole. But how 'bout, just for a change of pace, don’t. Have a nice warm cup of shut the fuck up, instead.
Not to mention the regular posts from outraged pit-readers who pit the pitters for what to them is flawed pitting. Those really annoy me something fierce.
There are those of us who read Pit rants primarily for their entertainment value, ya know.
And as long as we’re on the subject of Pit Manners, I’ve been manning the Pit for going on eight years now, and I appreciate the assistance in separating the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.
This is one of the great annoyances and mysteries of this and other message boards to me. There are far more web pages on the net than there are humans on Earth; if you don’t like the OP then move onto another, if you don’t like the message board move onto another, if you don’t like any message boards then start your own message board and make whatever rules you can live with. I wonder sometimes if these same people go up to people in a restaurant to say “I couldn’t help overhearing and wanted to let you know that I’m not at all interested in your conversation” or “Excuse me, but I give that blowse a 4 on a scale of 1 to 10. I can’t stand floral prints.”
I think LifeOnWry was serious, which leads me to propose a new rule for the Pit.
I think if somebody posts an OP in the Pit that is ragging another member, posters should get to vote on whether said OP should be banned. The mods/admins would have to bow to the posters.
This would be a one time thing, subject to vote, democracy in action, so to speak.
If after the thread reached x amount of posts, a vote would be done, and if 51% of the thread responders said adios, then ban the sorry fuck.
But the bannee could come back in one month.
It would make everything a bit easier I think, and less work for the PTB.
or, you could take your own advice and skip reading those posts
well a mod suggested that tactic to encourage folks to not post RO threads here. Plus half the fucking time the asshole can’t even be bothered to title it so I know ahead of time that it’s one of those (I can’t see to read the mouseover at my home set up).
you mean like whinnig about posters rating the threads and then whinning about folks complaining about MPSIMSy threads being in the pit? yea, that bugs me, too.
so,why don’t you take this advice?
well, if its “filled” with that, sounds like it was a stupid OP in the first place.
or, if your fine sensabilities cannot handle it, you could stay out of the whole forum. IME in the PIT, folks can be rude, blunt etc, but acting like an ‘asshole’ still gets called out.
If all you want is posters agreeing with you, the pit is not for you. scamper off to MPSIMS please.
I would like to answer some of the assertions made here in a reasoned manner.
Rating posts: Sometimes people who read Pit threads do so specifically FOR the use of foul language or wishes that the object of the vitriol be sodomized. I am entirely sure that nobody really cared about that guy who annoyed me at the bus stop, but people sure did seem to like reading about WHY he annoyed me.
“Recreational outrage:” Along the same lines, many people who surf the Pit looking to get a little entertainment from someone else’s venting. And where’s the value in clicking on a link that says “Die, you fucker,” that includes only a link to some AP news article and nothing about WHY the poster feels that way?
2a. Furthermore, why should anyone bother to post a reply or begin a discussion on a topic about which the OP didn’t give enough of a rat’s ass to start anything? I find it hard to believe that someone’s outrage even burns with the intensity of a freakin’ birthday candle if all they do is cut and paste a link.
OK, fair enough to say “don’t read the thread” if it’s on a topic that annoys you. But what if it’s on a topic that interests you, or about/by a person you want to hear from? Then you open the thread and it’s content-free post after content-free post, or a lot of bandwagoning jack offs repeating the same sentiment, and hijacking the thread? That’s annoying, and it happens fairly frequently in the Pit. Can’t really ignore them, since they often make up the majority of the posts, with the occasional relevant post mixed it. I’m thinking of the recent tomndebb thread by Valteron off the top of my head.
We have some exceptionally good, witty writers here. There have been many times when I’ve laughed myself silly at some of the hyperbole and clever wordplay. For example, I have no interest whatsoever in reading about annoying telemarketers, but there was a thread here in the Pit a number of years ago in which the OP posted a point-by-point argument against a telemarketer, including the question “and because I have an asshole, it means I want a running chainsaw inserted into it?” I was on the floor.
Don’t get me wrong. I don’t object to the Pit, I don’t object to pittings of posters, or even knock-down drag-out flame wars. But posting “This Pit post is worthless, thanks for playing, go away” is just stupid.
WRT recreational outrage posts - I do understand why people object to them. I object to them. But I think they should be allowed, and I think it’s a greater waste of time to point out every RO post than it is to just ignore one.
