I’m not a fan of the abusive tone that many of these dead-horse threads take, but I must say I’m a bit bewildered that a website with what must be, what, an income in the six figures–plus advertising revenue–seems to be spending the money on coke and whores. They certainly don’t seem to be spending it on the infrastructure of the site. Surely this site generates enough revenue that the constant problems could be pretty easily dealt with?
If so, why aren’t they?
I know it’s a given that TPTB don’t ever really have to answer such queries; the noisiest sycophants can be counted on to flood a thread such as this one with brown glurg and thus supply a ready excuse.

Yeah, it’s annoying. I have the site time out for me during mid-day (US) sometimes, but I also use an older computer and I figure the memory I have has something to do with it as well.
Bottom line: you paid for this service, which for most of the people on it performs as it’s supposed to the majority of the time. Timeouts suck. This site has timeouts. Could they possibly be at your end? Maybe, maybe not. Even if they’re totally the fault of the Chicago Reader and Its Holy Hamster-Powered Servers, the level of vitriol is way out of proportion.

No. I’m not trying to excuse the level of service of the site, which should be faster. I was merely trying to say that 1) the level of vitriol (“sue them for millions”) was silly and 2) somebody ought to take some sort of blood pressure meds before his head explodes.
Criticisms of the boards are quite all right with me - I get very frustrated when I’m trying to drink my coffee in the morning, read stuff, and all I get are timeouts. Like I said, my computer is old so I assign it some of the fault. Maybe that’s not the case.
But seriously…complain complain complain. Do it. I’m doing it right now - the site times out for me during periods of high activity. I would love to have a concrete answer as to why this happens, because it annoys the hell out of me. Calling on lawyers to sue the Reader because I can’t always use my $14.95 to its optimal value is a waste of my time. Apparently other people feel differently.

Two choices, find a lawyer that will take your case for under $14.95 or make manifest your disapproval with your browser and not come back here (and not renew, of course). Any other solution will mean more losses for you.

The SDMB is painfully slow and unreliable. It actually sucks. For me, as of this moment, the inconvenience of it is more than offset by the value I feel I am getting from it. The minute this changes, I will stop renewing and be gone. In silence, without drama.
At any rate, I thank you for the amusement value of posting something along the lines of “this lady cut in front of me yesterday, someone go and rear-end her for me”. Worth the disconnect from last night.
Okay, then what is the problem? This board was unusable for a significant period of time Friday night (at least for me) while every other site I went to worked fine.
