“Taxation, gentlemen, is very much like dairy farming. The task is to extract the maximum amount of milk with the minimum of moo. And I am afraid to say that these days all I get is moo.”

I love Vimes’ Dayplanner. Nice way to show the “way things could have been.” We get a lot more of Leonard of Quirm, too. All in all, a good outing.

I like the insight into Leonard of Quirm, who until this was mostly just a series of footnotes.

I also like the (wholly unecessary) extended stay with Nobby and Colon in the submarine with Vimes, though when they turn into a Vaudeville act it gets a bit too silly.

War is stupid.

My bolding - I think you mean Vetinari.

Not my favourite - I can see what he was going for, but it falls a little short for me. More of the tone from when Vimes meets the immigrant family would have worked better for me, less Colon and Nobby. And Carrot as Lawrence of Arabia really bored me. At least he improves by Fifth Elephant.

D’oh! Yes, I did. Stupid ‘V’ words…

I got a chill down my spine with its accounting of the fall of Ankh-Morpork. Ticking off the characters we know and love one by one…

And my hat’s off to Vetinari, making all the jingoists look even stupider than usual.

Loved the informal soccer game at the end, with Carrot as the referee.

Jingo, by PTerry

I loved this book, one of my favorites. Everyone’s someone’s terrier, at the end. And the whole thing between 71-Hour Ahmed and Vimes was genius.

Thanks, silenus for keeping this going.

De nada. Not to mention the whole “He’s not going to arrest an army, is he?” idea. Vetenari proves to be sneakier than anybody had imagined, and Leonard of Quirm gets to take a field trip. I loved the passage when what Leonard said about Lesthp finally sank in to Vetenari’s head. One of these days, he’s going to forget a bit and AM will need a new Patrician.
