5th Annual SDMB Early Super Bowl Pick Contest

Woohoo, it's that time of year again -- time to see who can make the most accurate Super Bowl prediction a month ahead of time.

In year 1, it was Trillionaire who beat the pack.
Year 2, Uncommon Sense schooled the rest of us.
In Year 3, it was Airman Doors, USAF who walked away with all the marbles.
And then last year, it was Grits and Hard Toast who came away with the crown.

Want to add your name to our illustrious list of winners? It's simple: post your pick for the two Super Bowl teams, and the final score.

As is tradition, I'll give myself zero chance by picking with my heart instead of my head. I'll be looking for some Week 17 payback by picking the Giants over the Patriots, 38-35.

As always, just in case you don't follow football but still wanna play along, just pick an AFC team, an NFC team, and a couple of numbers that sound vaguely football-scorish.

AFC Teams:
New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Indianapolis Colts, San Diego Chargers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans

NFC Teams:
Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Seattle Seahawks, New York Giants, Washington Redskins

If it does go down like that (which it almost certainly won't) my household will be waist deep in blood from the open warfare that my wife and I will be engaged in. My son, while favoring me in the colossal struggle, will certainly have some empathy for his mother up to the moment that she dies a thousand times inside.

In an incredible matchup that nobody can believe (and nobody wanted), the Steelers edge out a victory over Seattle 20-10

Heh...if you want to make it past the first round, I'd be a little more specific. I have a feeling "Anybody" will lose in the Wild Card round.

Since I am going for back to back wins in the SDMB Early Superbowl Pick Contest, I will go with the team who is also going for back to back wins.

Colts 24
Packers 17

Good luck to everyone!

I was going to pick the Colts over the Packers, but it's been done, and done well. So instead I'll show my hometown favoritism and pick the last coach of the Bucs over the current coach of the Bucs:

Colts 35
Bucs 17

How are ties resolved? Combined difference between the predicted score and actual score for each team? Total points? Same thing, actually... Something else?

In the event of a tie in our pick 'em pool, I think they should go to overtime. I'll draft a petition for the commissioner with a link to this thread.

Holy shit it's tough predicting the NFC. In the AFC, it's probably the Pats, maybe the Colts, and a slim chance it's the Jags. But every single NFC team has a healthy dose of suck, so who the fuck knows.

Colts 33
Redskins 19

Couple of hours to go before playoff action gets under way -- get those picks in here! You don't even have to know a damn thing about the game...just throw out a few team names listed in the OP and some numbers to go along with them.

As for tiebreaking, SenorBeef, hmmm...let's go with "closest to the winning team's score, followed by closest to losing team's score". Not that we'll need that much of a tiebreaker, but just in case...

I'm having trouble figuring it out at all, much less a second-order tiebreaker. Here's my swipe at it:
  1. Picked one team, but they didn't win/lose as you predicted
  2. Picked winner correctly
  3. Picked loser correctly
  4. Picked both teams
  5. Picked both teams AND the winner
  6. Closest to final margin of victory
  7. Closest to total points
Some examples where everybody missed everything except two players.

Player 1: Colts over Packers
Player 2: Packers over Patriots
Actual: Packers over Colts

P2 got the winner right, P1 got both teams right. Who wins? By my rules above, P1 would win the tiebreaker since he satisfied a higher condition in the list. (Correctly picked both teams, though the wrong team won.)

Player 1: Patriots 35, Cowboys 28
Player 2: Patriots 42, Cowboys 20
Actual: Patriots 42, Cowboys 35

P2 nailed the winning score, but P1 correctly guessed the margin of victory, so (again just by my off-the-cuff rules) P1 would win having satisfied the higher criteria.

Am I close, or is this way too much thought to put into it?

I just realized there is a very good chance I'm going to be eliminated after the very first playoff game. Probably shoulda picked two teams who have a bye just to ensure I stay alive until at least next week.

Ah well, I always go out immediately in these things anyway. (Much like my beloved Giants.)

EDIT: Steps 2 & 3 are backwards above; picking the winner should be a higher priority than picking the loser.

It's my understanding that the object is #5 alone, with 6 and 7 being tie breakers.

I didn't see the post until today, so to be fair I'll pick for the February 2009 Super Bowl, whatever number SB game that is in Roman numerals:

Cleveland 35
Detroit 17.

Dude, I hope more than you can possibly imagine that you are incorrect about the score. Hack the 3 off of New England and make it 38-5. That's more in line with what I want to see.

Congratulations, welcome to the small pantheon of (lucky) prognosticators. Next year I'll be the first two-time winner, if only because I'm the only one to have the stones to go with the Steelers every single year.

Well done!

And I hope you are right about that score...would make for a very exciting game.

Congratulations.

Do I have to Fed Ex the Crown back to you? Or do you give out new ones each year?

(I am very glad I previewed this post. I had orginally written something else, but for some reason the result ended up looking like this)

::::assing Crown to Hal::::::::

I think that might be another type of contest!
