Hope you don’t mind me starting this thread, sachertorte.
Living players, scram. The only way you’re allowed to read this thread is if you’re dead or by telepathy. Take note of the sachertorte-HazelNutCoffee connection in Recruitment.

I’ve never played a closed game, come to think of it. Maybe Conspiracy was the closest thing, since we had a list of roles but weren’t sure which were actually present.
Talk about heightened paranoia.
sachertorte, did you assign the roles randomly?
Of course.
It’s easier that way. No thinking necessary.
Just curious.
I’m just going to ramble on a bit here. I’m sick and drugged up to my eyeballs.
Interesting to think about the difference between a newbie townie mistake and a newbie scum mistake. If Recruitment taught us anything I suppose it’s that a newbie townie will be more likely to make a mistake that immediately evokes a “Who, that was scummy” reaction, while a newbie scum mistake is that they try to hard to suck up to town.
I think I’ve made some bad decisions already. I accepted Sitnam into the game and didn’t even think about checking to see that PMs were enabled. Now I have no way of contacting him. I don’t even know if he will check the thread. Grrrr. I may have to sub someone in already. Oh well, I’ll wait until Monday to worry about it.
Let me be the first to say: It’s an unfair set up!
Okay, not really. sach knows enough to make a balanced a game. The closed set up does make it harder on the Town, though.
It’ll be interesting to see how role claiming goes. Pro-Town power roles will obviously claim something. But they may also hold back critical information, to try to spring a trap on scum. Scum will undoubtedly claim a pro-Town power role as well. Expect to see dissection of claims and debate about whether a claimed role is “simple”.
There’s a lot of new players. I expect a lot of sub-optimal play, as new players miscalculate strategies.
If he’s Town, Blaster is going to be Night-killed very early. If he’s Scum, woe to the Town.
As academically fascinating as the Blamath is, I have very little hope that anyone will actually be able to accurately plot, visualize, or otherwise be ware of psuedo-random vs random stuff.
That has always been my problem with the theory. It is totally useless in the short term and only becomes valuable, maybe, at endgame. Meanwhile the town is wandering around placing random votes and lynching people for no good reason, hoping that a cop will show up and save the day.
HARUMPH!
Two newbie scum tells–claims unsure of how to proceed, what to think. And simultaneously smudges two others.
Will all due respect to the number-loving vets, any time you guys post formulas my eyes glaze over and refuse to focus.
Pleonast - I dunno, that kind of thing just seems like a newbie thing in general. I feel like that’s how I played in Sekham in the beginning.
That random number-generator-voting thing always bugs me. Especially when people feel the need to announce they’re using it.
I feel more suspicious of pedescribe for some reason.
But Day 1 is always a bitch.
So if the town wins, does NAF get to count that on his personal mafia record?
I better! I need the wins on my side. My record is fairly bleak, only 2 wins out of … almost 8 games.
Not very good. And one of those I was killed Night 1 after only playing the game for a (relativly short) Day. So I don’t really count it.
Jesus. 8 games? You guys need to get out more.
How many times were you scum out of those six losses, NAF?
I know, it’s crazy that it’s that many. I have also modded 3 games in that time.
One of them is ongoing offboard, so it’s only 5 losses.
I was scum in:
Pirates
Sekham
and
Psycopath
I was town in 3 kingdoms (town lost but scum didn’t win, it was weird)
I was town in Blade Runner and town lost bad.
I won in M3 and the last one.
I remember in the Recruitment forbidden thread - sach made a comment about how scum have been winning lately . . . obviously I haven’t been keeping up with the offboard games, but let me see if I am remembering correctly:
M1 - town
M2 - scum
M3 - town
Sekham - town
Conspiracy - town
YSI - scum
Recruitment - town
What about the offboard games?
It would be fun if someone created an archive of sorts for the mafia games - I know I find myself - and a lot of other players - referring to past mafia incidents casually during game play, and it would be helpful for new players to have something to refer to.
I might try my hand at it over summer break. (If I find myself with no life and bereft of my sanity :p.)
Off board we have had
Pirates: town
Psychopaths: town
Firefly: town
Blade Runner: scum
and
Three Kingdoms: neither town nor scum, but very certainly not town.
We also have had one mini game which was won by town. Don’t know if it counts as it was played entirely with lolcat macros. Fun, but silly.
I don’t think Recruitment really taught us much of anything. It was so short and just about everything that could go wrong for Darth Sensitive did go wrong. Although I guess we did see about some classic newbie mistakes demonstrated quite nicely.
Yes, it was short and Darth did have a string of bad luck. But what ultimately did him, I think, was his slip that Hal caught - his Dusk comment about dotchan’s lynch. I was thinking of that versus CapnPitt’s lynch, where he got jumped on for what seemed to be a scum slip yet turned out to be a newbie mistake.
Maybe I should have said, “If Recruitment taught ME anything.” YMMV.
Wasn’t M1 the werewolf one? I thought that was a scum win - I was watching it, and remember the description given of the few remaining scum turning into wolves at dusk and setting upon the surviving town.
Oooh, a Forbidden Thread I can finally hang out in.
