Unethical drug dealers are killing Amy Winehouse!

As reported here, Amy Winehouse’s dad has " … called on drug dealers to help her recovery by refusing to supply her with crack cocaine."

Can you believe this shit?! Those dealers must be aware how their product is ruining Amy’s life and career, and now possibly leading to her early demise, if they read even a single tabloid newspaper! But they merrily go along with their little business, selling her crack and heroin and God knows what else, as if nothing matters but their profits!

An ethical dealer of crack cocaine would make sure that his customers were not hurting themselves or doing more drugs than they could handle, especially if their customers were young celebrities with bright futures ahead of them. He would limit his clientele to people who did small amounts of drugs recreationally, or to poor people and minorities whose lives were bound to mean nothing to anybody anyway. Those bastards!

Or wait–maybe Amy’s dad is just a demented fucknoodle who knows less about drug addiction and the illegal narcotics industry than a retarded slime mold.

Jesus. If you really care, get the girl into a rehab program or something. Don’t make a public call for drug dealers to act in their customers’ best interest just so you can pretend you’ve done something useful … If drug dealers cared about other people’s lives and health, they’d be in a less destructive occupation, like ‘serial killer’ or ‘press secretary to the President of the United States’.

That’s pretty funny.

How ironic:

I think this is actually the latest in a line of vain attempts by the Winehouse family to get through to their daughter via the tabloids. The previous one was her mother asking people not to buy her records.

Wow. That does sound pretty hopeless. They’re relying on Amy not only caring about what some tabloid says they think, but also being literate. Talk about phoning it in …

A less cynical view might be that of a father desperate to save his daughter. Desperate people say stupid things.

They can’t make her do anything. From what I know about the situation, not a ton, I’m not up on celebrity gossip, they’re basically trying anything they can to get through to her since she’s rejected all attempts so far.

She is self destructive. Determined people can always find a way.

Out of curiosity…

If I’m mentally unfit due to some psychological problem, I can be tossed in a mental care facility until I either get better or just die.

Why can’t the same be done for someone who is mentally incompetent due to drugs rather than, say, a different chemical imbalance, if you know what I mean?

I feel sorry for the guy. I’m not up on British law but getting someone committed isn’t easy. I kind of see that as the actions of someone desperate to save his daughter before she finally kills herself.

I’ve never seen anyone so obviously self-destruct in public - closest is Shane Magowan, and he was never in the public eye (at least in the US) like Winehouse is. Oh well. I’ll just sit back and marvel at the pictures each day.

Joe

Maybe he’s like the thousands and thousands of other desperate parents who don’t know for the life of them how they could possibly save their adult children from ruining their lives. Amy Winehouse is over 18, there’s nothing her parents can make her do.

It can be, if you can show incompetence. But killing yourself, quick or slow, is no longer an actionable offense in most places if you’re in your right mind (though suicide is frequently still criminalized on the books). So if you can’t show incompetence – gravely disabled, or present danger to self or others – you can’t get the person committed. Civil commitment for mental disability is not an easy thing to do in any case.

This reminds me of the terrible tragedy of Carroll O’Connor’s son Hugh, a suicide after a long drug addiction. O’Connor blamed his son’s dealer as a “partner in murder” and a jury backed him up when the dealer sued for slander. Winehouse’s father sees this happening right in front of his eyes.

I’m about as sympathetic as anyone, but come on - this is completely over-the-top.
Yeah, she’s self-destructive and bi-polar and self-medicating and whatever else - you can’t save everyone, especially someone who is determined to not save themselves. This sounds more like “it’s everyone’s fault but hers” than anything else. I’m pretty sure any number of recovered addicts here will back me up when I say her recovery has to come from her, not from any outside source. I do feel sympathy for her family, but if you say stupid shit like this, people are going to laugh at it.

Thank you! I needed that.

You’re welcome! And I’m glad it was appreciated–I really only posted the whole rant because I came up with that line.

It sounds like a desperate dad’s plea. If I had a very talented daughter self-destruct before my eyes, I’d be trying everything. I hope someone/something gets through to her soon, because I love her singing.

I enjoyed the humour in the OP-- though I disagree with that view of the situation.

I agree that unethical drug dealers are a problem. Nobody should charge those prices and use that much cut.

Perhaps Papa Winhehouse should remember that many drug dealers are addicts themselves-trying to make enough to get their own fix.

There was a funny Richard Pryor routine where he talks about he was so bad with his addiction that it got to the point that drug dealers wouldn’t sell him anything.

Drug Dealer: I don’t want to see you do this to yourself!
Pryor: Okay, okay, just give me enough to make it through the weekend.
Drug Dealer: Okay, how much?
Pryor: A kilo.
