Bumbershoot 2008! What's Good? (Music Festival)

Any recommendations for what to see at Bumbershoot? The only acts I am interested in so far are The Blakes and The Black Keys, and I don’t recognize 90% of the other ones (damn, I’m old). What about the non-music stuff? I see William Gibson is going to be there, but while I like his writing, I have no idea what he might do in person that might be of interest. What else is good in the Seattle area? Anything to avoid?

I’m getting old too. I’d probably see Superchunk just for old time sake. Frankly, I didn’t think they were that great in '95, but I did get to hang with them at a show in Ames once. Maybe they’ve done something good lately. Obviously they are playing a big stage at Bumbershoot, so somethings up. I’d also go see Deathcab for Cutie. I like them a lot, but then they seem to be the headliner that night and that is not always good for a band. I also think I would be obligated to go see Reefer Madness the Musical. It’s sort of like needing to see a trainwreck.

Frankly, I’d go to the Crocodile Cafe and hang out. If you’ve got a good eye for people, it is not uncommon for the rockers to show up there.

Too late. :frowning:

If I were going, this is who I’d be seeing:
Death Cab For Cutie
Cheb i Sabbah & 1002 Nights featuring Riffat Sultana
Battles
Dan Deacon
West Indian Girl
The Physics

Whaa? Oh good lord how sad! I wasn’t aware of the divorce either. Probably the cute little thing hanging off of Peter Buck at the Robyn Hitchcock show was not his wife

Well that general area is pretty good. I haven’t been to Seattle in awhile. I think there was a Lava Lounge by there.

Sorry, I should have provided a link. (In case anyone else wants to read about it.)

The Crocodile is ‘around the corner’ from my office. (I’m on 3rd between Lenora and Blanchard.) Since I live 100+ miles north, and employment was an issue the first couple of years, I never got down to Crocodile Café. Then I got my current job and saw how close I was. What luck! I thought I’d hang out after work sometime and go to a show. But I never got round to it because of the drive. I did have lunch there though.

But you’re right; there are a number of clubs in the area. I don’t have anyone to go to them with, but I’m planning to take an electric guitar class this fall that will move one of my telecommuting days to Wednesday. So I’ll be in Belltown Friday and not have to get up in the morning.

Oh – Crocodile Café may re-open.

Hmm…if it were me I’d check out Del the Funky Homosapien and Mike Doughty (formerly of Soul Coughing) on Sunday. Oddly enough they are back-to-back, but on 2 different stages.

I’d also like to see what Beck’s up to these days.

The owner is a customer in my store. We do not like her. Even before this happened, she was a store unfavorite.

Holy crap Mike Doughty! I missed him on the lineup. That’s one I’ll be present for.

Go see these guys on Sunday:

Shim
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM @ Sky Church

Trust me - they’re awesome. And I’m not just saying that because the singer and drummer are friends of mine.

(Don’t ask me where “Sky Church” is - I don’t live in Seattle)

its at EMP, which is on the east side of the grounds its the weird looking building near the rides…well some of the rides.

friday
Beck, for sure. he puts on a great show and has good cross genre appeal.

Sat
Stone temple pilots could be great, could suck but they do have a good song list to choose from
Lee “scratch” Perry, Loooooooong time reggae star with decades of performing under his belt.

Sun
Death Cab
Del tha funky homosapien
Mike Doughty

ran out of energy due to a long day, but monday looks to have the strongest line up to me, I will probably hit sun and mon though

Wow, the first time I went to Bumbershoot it was at Myrtle Edwards Park We used to go every year, but it’s just gotten too crowded to enjoy.

man, I have never braved the madness of bumbershoot but I’d see:

Beck
!!!
The Black Keys
Del Tha Funky Homosapien
Mike Doughty

Maybes would be:
Anti-Flag
Neko Case
Stone Temple Pilots (the wife would drag me)
The Old 97s
Flobots

This years lineup appeals to me a lot less than past years. I just don’t know if I could stand the crouds for that long, I’m too old for this shit.
