A quick google says that she was quoting from the Bible - The Book of Job.

Job 38:19 "What is the way to the abode of life? Where does darkness reside?"

I haven't watched ER in years. Why was Abby reading a poem? Who died?

It was basically a voiceover at the very beginning and at the end as she was preparing for her final shift and then her departure. Ok, that sounds really clumsy, but I feel kind of clumsy right now.
