A Maine Vacation MMP - yeah, summer time, y'all!

I’m hoping that this week’s MMP will bring a bit of warmth to us all, ‘cause we could sure use some! Well, at least those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, that is. It’s nearly the vernal equinox, though, so take heart all.

I’ve talked about the time as a child when I lived in Michigan, and after we moved back east, it was one vacation spot for us. My family found another place to vacation, though: the state of Maine.

Our first vacation there was in 1965, when we spent a couple of weeks at a cottage on a small inland lake called Tilden’s Pond. I couldn’t recall where it was, but on a google expedition, I discovered it was not far from Belfast and actually not all that far from the Atlantic coast. I do recall going to the Penobscot Bay and having a steamed lobster (this was really a treat – with 5 kids, we didn’t get steak or lobster very often!). We also brought our poodle Jacques and our two cats, Kit and Kat (Kit Kat, get it? lol they were sister kitties); I don’t know how my parents were able to find a place that accepted pets, but they did. Tilden’s pond had a lot of algae and plenty of minnows; Jacques loved to chase those minnows! The cottage also had a –huge- selection of the older National Geographics (you all know which ones I’m talking about now, don’t cha?!), which the older boys and I all goggled over. We only went to Tilden’s Pond that one year, however.

The next place we went to vacation at was a small cottage in Weld Maine, just across from the Weld Inn; we had access to the beach of the Weld Inn on Lake Webb; it was a nice sandy beach, with a dock and a float. Weld and Lake Webb are in Western Maine, not far from Rumford (to the south) and Rangely (to the north). There are plenty of mountains for hiking, including Tumbledown, which I actually hiked to the top with my brothers and Dad one year. That was something, let me tell you! We were supposedly on the “easy” trail (Yah right!), and then my brothers kept telling me that it was, “just around the bend.” You know, they tried that when we went to Mt. Blue, but I wasn’t buying it that time! We did get enough wild blueberries up there, though, to make at least one pie with.

I went up there with them for several summers, usually the month of August, which was my Dad’s usual vacation month (he’s a minister); we always took our pets (the dog and cat), and drove up there from Delaware. One year, we even saw my HS English teacher, who was driving her kids up to their summer vacation home somewhere in New England – we were looking for other Delaware license plates, and there they were. Oh, I would complain about being up there with nothing to do and no-one to do it with. The highlight of my day would most likely be the walk to the local library. There was no TV in the cottage, although there was a radio.

My last summer with them was 1970, the summer after I graduated from High School. The family continued to go but I had summer jobs between semesters at college. They found a different cottage too; I would have liked to go with them, but have never been back to Maine. Yet. I can remember the many day outings we did; once we visited a ski area (yes, you can visit them during the summer!) and rode the gondola to the top of the mountain. Only something happened about half way up and the gondola stopped … and then started swaying in the air! We were afraid it was going to fall, but none of us wanted to voice that; what a wonderful moment it was when the gondola started moving upwards again. Still though, I was very relieved once we got back to the base of the mountain.

I wish that I had links for you all, but I couldn’t find anything on Tilden’s Pond, and very little on Weld! Both places were very small!

Have you ever vacationed in Maine or lived there? Please share your stories about

First!!!

That’s all

ETA: I have no Maine experience, I just wanted to be first for once.

Some ideas: Monhegan Island, accessible only by ferry. If it still exists, stay at the Trailing Yew. When I was there in 1967, prior to entering college, it was still only lit by gas lamps. Killer bakery. I saw my first shooting star & deer there.

Go to Dark Harbor/Isleboro Maine. Island again. Probably overrun by tourists, as is the former.

Belfast is lovely. Great old brick buildings downtown.

Portland is the home of Cross Jewelers, the finest purveyors of Maine watermelon tourmaline. Some day, baby, I’ll get my hands on a ring from there.

I don’t recall ever having been to Maine. It’s nice to be [del]second[/del]third though!

So (from the last MMP), FCM, if this:

is the before shot, will your boobies look like this:

once you’re done?

I’ve never been to Maine. I am vacationing at the RBC Center this week, and i will go to Vegas in August.

Sadly, my Maine experience consisted of driving in a few miles, then turning around and driving out. Summer of '76 I think - I was in training in Newport, RI, and another trainee and I drove the coast from Newport to Maine, just to say we went there. My only time in New Hampshire also consists of a drive-thru. But spousal unit and I want to spend some time there. I’m guessing it’ll be after we retire - we’ll just sail the New England coast for a few months.

Dottie, the “after” shoud look like this: ([sub]*[/sub])([sub]*[/sub]) - squished, you know…

Speaking of which, it’s time to head to the hospital. Normally, it’s about 40 minutes from home, but with the morning rush traffic, it might take longer. I’d rather be early than miss my appointment.

Happy Monday, all! MWAH!!

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffienatin’ here. I need to work purtify soonish though. YAWN Oh well, at least it’s my Tuesday.

Great OP Herbs. I’ve never been to Maine or anywhere else in New England for that matter. I’d like to rectify that however. In summer. Maybe fall. Never in the winter though. I don’t like that white stuff that falls from the sky during winter.

Ok, must brekkiefy and work purtify.

Later Y’all!

My college roomie was from Maine and I left my knee on a ski slope there (cast for 4 months, crutches for almost a year). I had a pivotal maturity experience (emotional) on the coast of Maine as well and watched the most beautiful thunderstorm over the ocean. I’ve eaten pancakes with fresh Maine blueberries picked from a field outside the house.

I had a friend break my heart and smoked a lot pf pot in Maine. Finally, I bought leather shoes from LLBean’s at 4am in Maine!

Never been to Maine. I loved your reminiscences of family vacations!

Every year, beginning when I was twelve, we rented a beachhouse for the week of July 4th. It was a blast! Not in Galveston, but farther south on Surfside Beach. We would go fishing and crabbing, and eat all that we caught.

We’d walk the beach for hours, and collect shells. The actual 4th my brother and I got to shoot fireworks. Fun times, fun times!

One year the blue crabs were spawning or something, and we were able to scoop up millions of crabs on the beach. We weren’t allowed to keep the females with orange eggs on the outside of their bodies. We brought so many home that my Mom, who had to cook them, told us to STOP!

Those are great family memories for me.

Apparently, I did missed something in the last MMP…

'Tis Monday, dammit, but I have no blurfs for y’all. I come before you filled with grrrrrrrrrrrr.

All last week, I had to contend with stooopid drivers that insisted on passing me in a double yellow zone despite the fact I was doing 60+ in an area marked for 45. WTF?

Today, however, took the cake. I went the other usual way out of Mayberry because of fog. Once again, I was doing 65 and at times 70 on a 2 lane road. Yet there were morons who insisted on riding my bumper and blinding me with bright and/or fog lights in the process. One even insisted on playing Road Rage Fuck You.

Too bad he didn’t try to make me pull over, 'cuz I would have relished opening a can of whupass on him.

Changing the subject a bit, I also have grrrrr for young puppies, and this is coming from the ultimate dog person. We have 10 fosters that are 5 weeks old, and I’m tired of the mess and the squawling. Dogs should be born 4 months old at a minimum.

Oh well. Another boring day at the office will calm me down. Carry on.

My family has a yearly vacation in Maine, small cottage, short walk to beach, a couple of good places to eat. My son & I fish from the jetties. We rented kayacs and played around in the harbor last year. The year before we hired a boat for a few hours of fishing, my DD caught a very nice striper. We meet friends each year at a small clam shack for dinner one night. We have been doing this since the kids were small, now they are all in their teens and they insist on it. A few disappointments, a few years ago the book store and the bagel shop closed. Last year a great used book shop closed. We have been very lucky with the weather, lots of sunshine, and usually cool at night. One year my sister did a week in the same town, rained all week, had a miserable time.
It is a long drive for us ,(getting longer every year), but worth it.

I once spent the month of June in Southwest Harbor, Maine on Mt. Desert Island. June is still considered the off-season there, but it was a fantastic way for a few Southerners to avoid one entire month of hot, hot weather. This was about 3 years ago, and I was just telling my wife last night that we need to go back for a while.

Great OP, Herbs. I’ve been to Maine, not sure which bit though, it was a drive-through from somewhere to somewhere else. Spent a fair bit of time in all weathers in New Hampshire and Vermont though, and yes, there was a bloke involved.

We used to spend family holidays in Brighton (gay capital of the UK) because that’s where my mother’s from and we went often to vist her mother until they had a spectacular falling out one year over a German exchange student. We also spent some fun times in Faversham, down in Kent which is where mydad grew up.

These days any kind of ‘family’ holiday involves me driving us up to Scotland to visit ‘im indoors’ relatives in Largs, Port Glasgow and Edinburgh. That’s quite enough family for anyone!

On the subject of family, his mother is in hospital in Spain with an infection after surgery for appendicitis. She’s been there about a week now and we are not sure when she will be able to travel home. Luckily his sister is still with her although I think his BIL has now come back home. Their father is currently in respite care as he has Parkinson’s disease and can’t be left on his own because he’s too unsteady on his feet now.

I’ve been to Maine on family trips, camping and staying in hotels. It was a lovely place. When I was a kid I lived for visits to the coast, so I could poke about in tide pools. So much fun.

Morning, everyone. It’s supposed to be nice and warm today (read: above freezing), so I’ll be able to open windows and maybe we can go on a long walk.

Oh, Muppet, Mr. Lissar confessed that he doesn’t want to go to Fabricland because he’ll spend idiotic amounts of money. Could I possibly prevail upon you to stop by on a lunch break this week and look for a couple of lengths for me? Purple, black, red. Basically anything not pastel or bright orange or lime green. I now occasionally wear blue and green. I will pay you in love, affection, and chocolate cake.

Never been to Maine. Heck, the closest I’ve been to the place was Boston. Once. In 1990. For 3 days…

Much to my surprise, when we were driving through the wilds of southern Virginia 2 weeks ago, we passed through a place called Assamoosic <snerk> Swamp, which sounds very Maine-like and out of place for Virginny.

That’s all I got for the OP.

Good Morning!

Maine is, for us, on the way to everywhere we drive to in the US. On rare a few occasions, we have spent some time rather than blasting through on I95. We have visited Bar Harbor by ferry and by road and took the ferry once from Portland to NS. It gave us a chance to explore Portland and area.

Next Saturday, we are driving to Sugarloaf to spend a week. I’m not a skier so I am hoping to find other things to do there. It doesn’t look to be very close to anywhere. It appears to be not far from Skowhegan. Any ideas?

As a resident of Maine my advice is…don’t. Unless you’re an outdoorsy person, you’ll be bored to death anywhere north of Portland. There are better places to spend your time and your money.

I’ve never been to Maine, but I’ve booked accomodations here for a few people from there. That’s a looooooong trip!
