SDMB All-Pro fantasy football league 2010

Don’t have time to write much now, but I wanted to get the individual league threads going.

We have a general discussion FF thread and this is last year’s league thread.

This league is not yet recruiting. Everyone from last year is invited back, and if we have some people fail to rejoin, I’ll start considering who to add. This is the most serious league I’m involved in and I consider it the premier/most competitive league in the SDMB.

Everyone is up for discussion. I think our rules are pretty well ironed out.

The big new addition to yahoo this year is auction drafts. Auction drafts are so far superior to regular drafts that I want all my leagues to be auction leagues - but the auction league would be pretty similar to this one if not for that difference, so people may want to keep the conventional format.

Reckon you could explain how an auction draft works? My main concern would be how long does it take compared to a regular draft, and how much of a pain in the ass would it be for a noob to figure out?

I forgot to mention that the draft is scheduled for Sep 2 at 9:45pm eastern. There’s a little wiggle room there, but speak up now if that’s going to be a problem for you.

That draft time works for me.

Most of us have signed up already, but still missing three:

Jules Andre
Kid_A
Kiros

Same as the other thread, Yahoo invites expire so a second invitation to those three (plus a mass PM) would be good.

Well, looks like it’s time. I’m going to be resigning from this league and giving you all a shot at actually winning for once (kidding), so you can make my spot available to anyone who wishes to join. Best of luck to you all in the coming season!

I think I may have asked you this before in IM, but I can’t recall the answer - why are you choosing to stay in the auction league rather than this one?

I really couldn’t handle as many leagues as I signed up for last season. I really only paid attention to this one and barely managed to keep my rosters current in the others. I’m trying to cut back, but I still want to try and get as much variety as I can. If this were an auction league I would have very strongly considered staying in this one and dropping the other auction league. I just love the auction style too much to give up, especially after last season (my first) where I basically crapped the bed and called it my fantasy team.

Beyond that, I could never demand, nor ask, that this switch to auction format after four years just for my capriciousness. I’d rather switch it up and let some new blood get in there than be that self centered.

I’d rather turn this league into an auction league too. I realizes that reduces the differences/variety between our leagues but… does anyone who’s done auction prefer to draft serpentine? It seems like everyone loves auction once they try it. And the only hassle, with yahoo not having auction drafts, has goen away.

I’d rather keep this league as a serpentine draft to differentiate it from the auction league.

I want in

We’ll probably be doing selection of any replacements from other leagues where we know people are involved, reliable, etc, but I’ll take note of you interest, Pancakes.

Does anyone else want to weigh in on the auction draft issue? We’ll probably end up keeping it the way it has been due to momentum, but aside from wanting to differentiate it from the auction league (which shares a lot of the same people), is there any way in which snake drafting is better? I’m just wondering if it’s worth going through a less fun draft just for the sake of keeping the leagues seeming more different.

The two leagues would still have significant differences - half or more of the owners wouldn’t be in the same leagues, the scoring systems are substantially different, the leagues have different histories and rosters, etc.

I’m just pushing for auction in all my leagues because I find it to be way more fun and satisfying (since you really have more control over your team) and I think most people that have tried both feel the same way. In the past, it was a pain in the ass to do a draft over at ESPN and import it over to yahoo, but now that it’s built right into yahoo I just want to run with it.

The main things are that it allows people to set up “draft boards” in a conventional sense, it mirrors the way the NFL draft actually works much more closely than an auction draft, and it allows people to prerank players to have a meaningful draft if they can’t make the live draft, which is a reasonable possibility in a multi-year closed league like this.

Also, the logistics of a snake draft are just kinda fun. It’s fun to steal players (or get them stolen) one pick before the next guy, and there’s an excitement as your pick gets closer to being on the clock – especially if your “on deck” players keep getting picked – that just isn’t there in an auction draft.

Don’t get me wrong, I greatly enjoy auction drafts, but I don’t think they’re better in every way. Just different.

Fair enough. Given the option, I think I’d convert all my leagues over to auction without regret. I do hope at least one of these leagues (all pro or big league - probably more important to the big league) switches over to auction, since it would be a shame if we didn’t take more advantage of yahoo’s new interface.

I was also hoping we could keep Jules in the league, since he’s so active and valuable to the league and I look forward most to stomping him. I don’t know if the window is still open for him to drop the auction league instead of this one, but I’d prefer that since I’ve always considered this my main league.

Kid_A and Kiros are the other two who haven’t signed up yet. I sent them a PM.

Kiros is often slow signing up, so I wouldn’t worry too much just yet. I know Kid_A has been doing this for years, so hopefully he’s getting back from vacation or something and just didn’t see the invite yet.

I just noticed Kid_A’s last logon date was in April. I’ll try to contact him via e-mail one last time, but I think we’re going to have to look at replacing him. Since unfortunately it looks official that Jules will be leaving this league this year, I’ll probably be looking at two replacements.

Kiros is MIA, but he’s logged into the SDMB today… I’ve sent him a PM and I’m assuming he doesn’t notice it and not that he’s deliberately ignoring it. I tried to get his attention in another thread he’s subscribed to, but I think he’ll probably end up playing.

If that’s the case, it looks like we’ll need 2 replacements. I have Jimmy Chitwood lined up - he was in our league for the first 3 years, but was too busy last year. If we need another slot filled, I’m in discussion with one of the better/more reliable SDMB FFers.

In a few days I’m going to use the method we used last year to randomly generate a draft order, so people can start planning for the pick they’ll get.

Two issues to clear up that I forgot to mention up until now.

I’m making a very similar post in the other leagues, so if you’ve read one you’ve read them all.

Are you guys cool with using the free agent aquisition budgets instead of a normal waiver system? We tried that in 3 of the other SDMB leagues last year and it worked well. It’s an auction style process every week to bid on players. Each team starts with $100 (or customizable) that they use for the rest of the year. Unsigned/free agent players go on waivers during the football weekend, and everyone has a shot at bidding on them.

It just gives more control than a standard waiver system and is generally preferable.

This is two seperate points though - the automatic period where free agents go on waivers (which you can have with either a standard waiver system or FAAB) and whether to do FAAB or not.

To clarify the waiver system thing, I posted this in one of the league messages last year:

"
Yahoo now supports automatically putting all players on waivers from Sunday to Tuesday to do what we did manually - prevent the first person to their computer when a player goes down from getting their backup and instead giving everyone a chance to make a claim. The difference in this case is that it’s built in to the yahoo system, and we’re using a silent auction style bidding system for players. You start with $100 + whatever money you had left at the end of the draft. In the event that there’s a tie, there’s also a rolling waiver list that works like a standard list where you get sent to the back every time it resolves an issue. Having no other real criteria, I also set the initial waiver priority list by the amount of money people had left after the draft, and in the case of a tie, reverse nomination order. The issue should rarely come up, though as there won’t be that many ties.

There’s one catch with this system. Since Thursday and Saturday night games fall outside of the Sunday 1pm-EST till Tuesday night automatic waiver period, a player could conceivably pick up a breakout performer from the those games before the Sunday till Tuesday waiver period. This goes against our system, so I’m creating a rule regarding this: If you want to pick up a free agent from a Thursday or Saturday night game after that game has begun, you have to wait until Sunday at 1pm EST and put in a waiver claim like the rest of the free agents. Premature pickups will be reverted. "

We could compensate a bit for the disadvantage of a bad draft position by giving people a bit of extra waiver/FAAB money, say $2 or $3 per slot after the top slot.

The other issue is… last year I took my leagues off trading with a league veto period and went to commissioner approval. The reason I did that was because essentially no one was willing to veto any trades anyway, and that we’re all serious players and we’re not gonna do some goofy Randy Moss + MJD for John Carlson deals at the end of the year as part of some weird griefing.

And a benefit to this system was that I could fast-track non-controversial trades. You could negotiate saturday afternoon and still get the trade processed before the games sunday morning, whereas with the vote system, no matter what the trade will take 24 hours to process. If there was something fishy going on, I could choose not to fast track it, and get league discussion on the issue and allow people to vote on it. But that never came up.

There was an issue last year when someone was pissed that I fast-tracked a trade that ended up working against that person (the team they faced benefitted from the guy they received that week). IIRC, I ended up pushing every single trade made before Sunday through before the games on Sunday, so everything made it through. I think it’s a better way to do it because you can still do trade negotiations later in the week and still have them count, or it’s possible some injury situation may occur less than 48 hours from the game of the player you want to trade for to replace the guy, etc.

Anyway, unless there’s objection, I want to make it clear that I plan to do it again this year, and any reasonable trades will be pushed through before the games of the players involved. If there’s some sort of controversy I can slow the process down and allow the group to discuss and even veto.

So - in summary: I propose the gameday free agent->waiver system we used last year - and that we used in previous years, only manually. Furthermore, I propose that we use Free Agent Aquisition Budgets rather than straight waivers. I also plan to run the league trades on commissioner approval and quickly approve all routine trades. Strange trades will take longer and come up for discussion.

Any issues?

All good by me.

We aren’t in danger of failing to fill up this league - I have people who want in. I just asked them to hold off a bit to see if any of our absent players rejoined, and that way I could redirect people to the auction league instead. It’ll be resolved soon.

All right guys, it looks like I’m in.

In an effort to disguise the fact that my real name is Matthew Berry, I’ll just say that my only previous fantasy experience is with professional soccer in Ecuador, I have no idea what a FAAB is, and I hear that kickers are at a premium and that they should be drafted early and often.

Ol’Gaffer was PMing me about wanting to join, and he seems like good people, so I went ahead and invited him to our league. He wants what we want - active, competant players who know each other and try to make deals and stuff, so he should fit right in.
