The Internet thinks I am a Jewish woman

In fact I am a Gentile man, but it seems that, lately, nearly every web site I go to shows me advertisements for The Tablet (the Jewish oriented magazine), or for women’s clothing, especially from the Spiegel catalog.

I did visit The Tablet’s site once, a month or so ago, following a link to a story about antisemitism, and I did once visit the Spiegel site, following a link from, IIRC, a post here at the Dope that mentioned the Spiegel catalog, and I clicked through because I did not know what it was. I did not explore beyond the home page.

I have no particular interest in Jewish issues, and I have never bought clothing of any sort online, let alone women’s clothing. I do buy other things, such as books, electronics, and occasionally even OTC pharmaceuticals, online, but do I see ads for those? Nooooo (well, certainly far less than for The Tablet and Spiegel).

So much for targeted advertising. (Actually, I am rather glad to find that the targeting is, apparently, so bad.)

Well, if the internet says it’s so, it must be so.

Get thee to a mikvah, pronto.

Is Spiegel supposed to be Jewish clothes? They’re just… clothes. My (white, Catholic) mom used to get their catalogs all the time.

Joe

He gets ads for The Tablet (internet thinks he’s Jewish) and Spiegel’s (internet thinks he’s a woman).

that’s okay, my Tivo thinks I’m gay.

I’ve had a surprising number of ads think I’m French. I thick my browser’s default language being set to Esperanto confuses them.

On the other hand, sometimes they’re surprisingly-accurate. It’s slightly disconcerting to be reading a news site from Australia and find it peppered with Canadian ads.

You could still become a Jewish woman, but you’d really have to go the extra mohel.

And with that groaner, you win the thread.

Happy Hanukkah, njtt!
