Glee: 2.16 "Original Song" (open spoilers)

Well it's Regionals and New Directions is performing original songs. Miss Kathy Griffin is guest-staring as a Sarah Palinesqe failed Tea Party candidate and homeschooler. Her co-judge is Miss Loretta Devine as a stipper turned nun.

The original songs are;
  • Get It Right
  • Loser Like Me
  • Hell to the No

The cover songs are;
  • Raise Your Glass (Pink)
  • Misery (Maroon 5)
  • Blackbird (The Beatles)
  • Candles (Hey Monday)
  • Jesus Is My Friend (Sonseed)

Not to mention "Trouty Mouth" and "Big-Ass Heart". Both of which would have, with some lyrical amendments, kicked the Warbler's collective ass!

"Trouty Mouth" .. heh. I liked how Santana piped up in a later scene to say, "I wrote another verse for Trouty Mouth!"

Who knew "My Hairband" was Brittany's favorite song? Of course, since she's dating Stubbles McCripplepants, maybe that shouldn't have been a big surprise.

New (reluctant) Glee viewer here. seen 3 episodes. The last two and the Superbowl episode.

Why was the blond boy (Sam?) so put out about Trouty Mouth?

Probably because he's sensitive about his mouth to face ratio.

Holy homosexual kissing, Batman! They're pretty adorable together. And I actually liked Rachel's song.

I don't know why, apart from most people's aversion to being compared to fish. He does have a pronounced need to be popular and accepted, and 'trout mouth' is the sort of nickname that sticks. But conversely, he does get to tap that.

Letting the bird croak was the way into Blaine's heart? Usually having the pet die on your watch annoys suitors, but glad it worked out in the end.

I loved Sr Mary's confusion over wether Dalton was a gay school or just seemed gay. I can't see how they can maker the Warblers look any gayer that they already do without resorting to an onscreen daisy chain. Loser Like Me was good, but I didn't care for any of the other original songs. I think they wasted Griffin. I'd love to see her character show up again. Maybe gets on the school board or Sue enlists her in zany scheme to destroy Schuester. And Sue, I love how she just randomly punched out the 2nd Lady of Ohio despite her having nothing at all to do with the judging. I hope Sue severs some severe, yet hilarious, consequences.

"I don't even remember putting that in there." And "Trouty Mouth" and "Big-Ass Heart" were hilarious. Quinn's pretty much a total bitch these days. It's about damn time for Kurt and Blaine, that was nice to see.

Overall, despite the total ridiculousness of the idea that they'd be able to write and learn two new songs for competition in a matter of freaking days, there was enough to more than distract from those weaknesses. I'll give it a "loved it."

I loved it, though it did seem very rushed going from "Let's write some original songs for regionals" to "Here we are at regionals" in the space of about 3 minutes.

Some funny stuff in this episode, though, including the other original songs (Trouty Mouth especially) and the judges' panel. It's always nice to see Rod Remington ("Can I add a dash of Rod to this lady soup?") and the nun/former stripper was funny. Kathy Griffin (whose comedy I like) was kinda flat. Sue decking the Lt. Governor's drunk-ass wife was shocking.

So in the remaining episodes, I wonder if they'll bring Kurt back to WMHS before Nationals. They need to leave Blaine at Dalton, though, because those Warbler songs are always really good. I also wonder if they will follow up on the closeted football bully any more.

What I'm wondering is how much of the music licensing budget was blown on "Blackbird." Beatles music usually starts in the low seven figures compared to mid five figures for hit songs.

I know they've done I Want To Hold Your Hand before- have they done any other Beatles songs?

"Only Child" started out not too bad, but it's no "My Headband"

Heh - that was one of my favourite Brittany moments of the episode - her favourite song is "My Headband" (and all other songs relate to it).

I think maybe they were going for the humour in Kathy Griffin's character to be that she is so controversial and homophiliac in real life. And the actress who played the stripper nun who is in everything and I can't recall her name was excellent, as she always is ("The convent is the only thing that will keep my off the pole." - Hah! I just the double entendre in that!)

I don't see how they can't. The Ohio Show Choir Assoc. didn't seem to have problems with Jesse moving from school to school, so expect some economic setback in the Hummell household necessitating tuition belt tightening. But will Blaine tag along?

Not too shabby. A few laugh out loud moments. "I don't even remember putting that in there" and "My Headband" were Brittany at her subtle scene-stealing best. I also chuckled at "Blaine and the Pips" at least they finally put a lampshade on that.

Loser like me was pretty good. Though the slushie bit was a bit too self-referencial for me. And it would have been cooler if more than Rachel and Finn got a line. Seemed tailor made for a line or half-verse from each character. Trouty Mouth, Big Ass Heart, and Only Child were hilariously intentionally bad. "The only Berry on my Familiy Tree" LOL.

Wow, that was one heck of a kiss. Things have come a long way since Joss Whedon had to use a tragic episode to slip in a brief lesbian kiss. The lines leading up to it were kinda glurgy though. Also, "this bird funeral probably reminds you of your mother's" was kind of klunky and insensitive. But Blaine made up for it with an awesome version of Raise your Glass (with his Pips, of course).

I missed last week, was there any mention of why Vocal Adrenaline wasn't at Regionals? With the foreshadowing early this season with their new coach and that Sunshine girl, I expected to see them back by now. Sue's pandering to the judges with the Jesus song was pretty hilarious too, and made me wish we'd seen more of her glee coaching. Was there some of that last week too?

Was it ever mentioned why the Warblers don't have a teacher advisor? That would probably not be allowed if Glee took place in the real world, but in the Glee world, I'll let it slide.

Anyone else worried about how long the show can stick with the formula for their seasonal arcs? Last year was sectionals/regionals. This year sectionals/regionals/nationals. what's next that wouldn't be repetitive? Real school years are predictable. TV shows can't stagnate. I guess we'll see what they pull out...

I'm not a huge Kathy Griffin fan, though she's been funny at roasts and such. She was kinda bad here, though, IMHO. Just pulled me out of the show.

Loretta Devine. When I saw her name in the credits I thought she might get to sing, too. I'm kind of disappointed that she didn't.

I work on Tuesday nights so sometimes I don't get to watch the show unless it's slow. But if a shift starts out slow as soon as 8pm rolls around the phone starts ringing off the hook, people come in, other staffers that don't watch Glee starts talking loud and making a lot of noise. So even if I do get to watch most of it, I always miss something. It's even more aggravating than missing the entire show.

My guess is this year they lose at nationals (like they lost at regionals at the end of last year). Then next season they win it. After that, I'm sure the writers will come up with something--either tougher competition so that they start losing again, or maybe some kind of international competition--which may be ridiculous but this is Glee we're talking about.

I was glad they finally addressed "Blaine and the Pips"- I just don't think any club would stand for that this long.

Kurt and Blaine's kiss was sweet and innocent and surprisingly believable. Nowhere near as hot as their oral sex in the Starbuck's men's room scene in the episode where they met though.

Did you notice "Jesus Is My Friend" ended with Aural Intensity forming a Star of David on the stage?

Also, according to the preview during the episode's closing tag, we're going to at least see the Vocal Adrenaline director again (the one who replaced Rachel's mom/Idina Menzel ... played by Cheyenne Jackson). Sue's got him, Sandy Ryerson (ex-choir director) and Will's ex-wife Terri all together in her quest against Will Shuester. Hijinks will doubtless ensue.

That would provide them with an excuse to do a big Bollywood-type number. Wasn't Kurt's character originally supposed to be an Indian-American boy who loved Bollywood musicals?

I assume Vocal Adrenoline's absence will be explained when Jonathan Groff and Charice appear next month.

Griffin and Devine were such walk on cameos. I hated to see them wasted. Olivia Newton John and Josh Groban got better material. I did like Griffin's little cross herself/salute gesture, though I think Tea Party members are overwhelmingly Protestant aren't they?

Speaking of teenagers singing original songs, have any of you seen this viral music video by a girl named Rebecca Black? It was apparently posted about a month ago and has gotten really big in the last couple of weeks. It now has over 9.7 million views on youtube.

It's slightly better than "My Headband" but both songs share a certain literal sensibility. Seriously, it really does remind me of this week's Glee original songs with their hilariously bad lyrics. If you squint just right, this girl could look kinda like Rachel Berry. Too bad she can't sing like her.

Warning: If you listen to the whole song, it could get stuck in your head for awhile. It's a bit earwormy.

Yeah, but I don't think all those views are from people who think it's good.

Unless you subscribe to the view, that I do, that the song is actually insanely deep and is about the existential crisis of a young girl who isn't even sure what life is and whether she's living it.

My thought was that maybe the last minute changes cause Kurt or Blaine to get blamed for the Warbler's loss. Seems a bit out character for the group, but it could be an opportunity to keep the characters while sending them both back to McKinley. God willing it could also finally put an end to the worn out "Zeis-erman" story arc.

There was no Kurt character, originally. He auditioned for Artie, which he didn't get, obviously, but Ryan liked him so much that he created the character specifically for him.

Good eye on Ryan Murphy's part as he became the breakout character.

Chris Colfer is very unusual in that sometimes he looks grown, sometimes he looks 12, sometimes he's sexy, sometimes he's homely, and he's as femine as you can get voicewise yet not really effeminate. It's probably the uniqueness that makes him a star. It will be interesting to see what he does after or in addition to GLEE.

For some reason depressed Sue's lament "Sweet Porcelain..." was just hysterical to me.

Trouty Mouth's lyrics:

Guppy face Trouty mouth
Is that how people's lips look like from where you come from in the south?
Grouper Mouth, Froggy lips
I love sucking on those salamander lips
If you tried hard enough you can suck a baby's head"

I think this was one of the better recent episodes, and I'm so glad Kurt finally got some action. I sort of wish everything had been spread out over two episodes instead, though. The writing of new songs, Kurt/Blaine, AND regionals was a lot for one episode, and it all seemed a bit rushed. We didn't even get to find out if the Warblers came in second or third!

I loved that Brittany's favorite song was "My Headband"...possibly the first song Brittany has ever really understood.

Rumor has it that Karofsky has a solo coming up in a couple of weeks, so I'm guessing that he's going to stop being a threat to Kurt and Kurt will return to McKinley in time to join New Directions at nationals. With luck he'll be able to convince the girls not to wear those awful leggings under their dresses again...although I suppose it's possible I'm just in denial about this being a perfectly on-trend look.

I never realized just how sad of a character Quinn was. I mean, she's right, she's probably going to be stuck in that small town for the rest of her life and she'll look back at high school as her glory days. Damn, I'd kill myself if high school was my highlight.

I actually loved Big-ass heart. And I thought Santana sang the style of trouty mouth well.

She's from a well to do family and has good grades so college is certainly an option, so if she stays in Lima it's her own choice. Poor Brittney on the other hand is probably going to have 13 kids by 11 fathers and still think they're brought on by not brushing her teeth enough.

I often wonder if her parents spiking her morning orange juice with birth control pills or if she's just barren.

Seventeen years between Northern Exposure's gay non-kiss/Roseanne's lesbian smooch and two teenage boys sharing a full on, no camera fade, not even a "very special episode", full strength kiss during primetime. Folks, I gotta tell you. As a society, we've come a long way in a short time. I mean, it ain't civil rights, but it's sort of frankly amazing if you think about it.

Also, "you could suck a baby's head" made me laugh until I was lightheaded and gasping.

A quick word on Dalton Academy. I aprove of the zero tollerance pollicy on bullies and the high academic standards. But every time The Warblers break into song, it's papers everwhere! I'd probably stay off campus for rehersals just so I can hang on to my homework. Pick up after yourselves!

"Hell to the No" was the best of the original songs.

That is all.

I'm glad it happened a few days after the tsunami or I guarantee you somebody would be making a connection (the "happened on another continent" thing being dismissed as irrelevant).

Apparently they have no rehearsal hall- they're always having to do it in the oak paneled artwork filled empty rooms.

Hadn't thought about it, but you're probably right. John Hagee is no doubt somewhere right now trying to figure out the connection.

Dalton is a very strange school. Gorgeous interior design, apparently no teachers or adult staff of any kind, and a student body consisting entirely of cute boys (all of whom are either gay or gay friendly). There's just got to be some deep, dark, Lovecraftian secret about it.
