Glee: 3.07 "I Kissed a Girl" (open spoilers)

The school election comes to end an end and some is caught trying to fix the results. Sue & Coach Bieste are comepeting for the same man. And Santana’s coming out to her family.

I’m guessing the last song will have some changes to the lyrics.

That was easily the worst cover of “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” I’ve ever heard. Wow…Glee rarely has a complete misstep on a song, but that

I guess they get some credit for doing something different with the song, but yeah. If I were Santana I’d have wanted to slap Finn again.

Speaking of musical missteps, when confronted by a goon who views lesbians as a sexy “challenge” there are perhaps more appropriate songs to use as a rebuttal than one about a straight woman kissing another woman because she’s drunk and wants to titillate her boyfriend.

Like this one:

When I first heard the title of this episode I was hoping against hope it would be named after the Jill Sobule song, but alas, it was not to be. Instead they went with the most misguided possible use of a song I loathe by a singer I hate that, just to top it all off, was already used on the show before (Tina’s audition, season one). Between that and the awful “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” number, I can’t give this episode a very high rating.

That said, I thought the Santana plot was done pretty well. I’m also glad that someone finally called Blaine out on his bizarre novelty bow ties. I’m kind of meh on the Coach Beiste plot this week, but I do like Beise vs. Sue so this could lead to good things. However, I’m disappointed that they’re continuing the Puck/Shelby storyline. That needs to be over already.

The class elections plot didn’t really work for me either. I feel like there are a lot of more interesting things they could have done with the election, and it didn’t seem in character for Kurt to seriously consider tampering with the ballots. I can believe he’d consider, or even actually do, something underhanded, but that particular scheme just didn’t strike me as his style. I kept thinking “That’s more the sort of thing Rachel would come up with”, so it was no surprise at all when she actually did it.

Which reminds me, there was a lot of talk about New Directions and the Troubletones competing against each other at Sectionals next week but no one mentioned that both choirs are still under the required minimum number of members for competition. The teaser for next week indicates that New Directions will solve this problem in part by

bringing back Sam, who, in what must be someone’s fanfiction come to life, has been working as a male stripperbut it was weird to have this ignored when the whole “must have 12 members” thing has been a big deal since the beginning of the show.

I’d kind of like to see the Troubletones team up with the Warblers, although I don’t want to see Sebastian again unless they can find a way to make him a lot less boring.

loved Coach Bieste and Jolene. Cooter doesn’t deserve her. And seriously Sue’s sloppy seconds? Ick.

Liked that Santana’s abuela didn’t accept her news – about time we had a realistic reaction on this show. (Speaking of which, liked Figgins’s explanation that slushies aren’t the list of items considered weapons.)

I agree that having Santana’s abuela not accepting the news was good, but her reason seemed odd. It’s okay that Santana’s a lesbian, as long as no one talks about it?

I thought Coach Bieste’s “Jolene” was perfect, and Finn’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” was bizaare.

In addition to Blaine’s bowtie, what the hell was Kurt wearing – a one-armed sweater?

Sadly, it made sense to me. I have a cousin who we all know is gay, but no one can actually say she’s gay. Yet, she’s out at work. She has been living with a partner for well over 15 years and no one, not even her mother, has met her. It’s the idea that if you don’t talk about it, it doesn’t exist and if you identify as such, you don’t exist.

I didn’t mind the episode. I agree the Finn’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” was weird, and loved Beiste’s “Jolene”.

Seconding this. My family deals with all unpleasantness like this. Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell has been our family motto long before the army got ahold of it.

This being Glee, I’m guessing an episode in the near future will feature Abuela’s tearful confession that she too is a lesbian but never had the guts to live openly. And speaking of lesbian grandmothers, I think Kurt mugged one for his sweater.

Since Cyndi Lauper goes to more Gay Pride marches than Fred Phelps I think that what Finn did to Girls Just Want To Have Fun should legally qualify as a hate crime.

Admittedly I’m not the best judge of feminine assets and all since I’m a “confirmed bachelor” and all, but does anybody else find Dot Marie Jones/Bieste unconventionally attractive? She’s definitely not a traditional beauty by any tradition’s definition, but I think if I were straight I’d find her attractive in a sort of ‘niche’ way if that makes sense.

Yeah, but aren’t you into burly guys?

Actually, she’s much more attractive (obviously) when she’s not Coach Bieste.

StG

No, I’m not. But, I am a burly guy, so this might be really weird and egocentric.

It’s her eyes, Sampiro. She’s got truly gorgeous eyes, and a very pleasant face. Not a put down, like, oh what a pleasant personality, but just an all around nice looking person you’d like to hang with.

I didn’t hate Finn’s version, but it did take me a minute to realize what it was. Someone needs to get Quinn into some therapy pdq.

Did Irish have a single line this episode and I blinked and missed it?

I don’t think so. He was shown reacting to music a couple of times but that’s about it.

Loved Jolene and Bieste in general.
Hated almost everything else.

Sorry, in what universe is it appropriate to have all the boys sing “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” to a newly outed lesbian, while the girl’s sing “I Kissed a Girl and I Liked it” in a non-ironic fashion for the boys.

I mean, I wasn’t expecting “All the Lazy Dykes”, but still, that missed the point, and drove off, at speed, in the opposite direction.

Standing in the Way of Control, by The Gossip would, I think, have been totally appropriate, both lyrically, and because Beth Ditto is gay.

“Your back’s against the wall/ There’s no-one home to call
You’re forgetting who you are/And you can’t stop crying
It’s part not giving in/And part trusting your friends
Standing in the way of control/You live you life the only way that you know”
randwill- thanks for that link- loved it.

That was very well put, Queen Tonya. She does have striking eyes, and a face that’s … yeah, pleasant, in the best possible sense of the word. Like, “warm kitchen full of bread and stew on a cold day” pleasant.

And yeah, count me in the “What the FUCK was Kurt wearing?” camp. Whoever dresses him is starting to remind me of French Stewart’s character on 3rd Rock From the Sun (Harry).

I didn’t love it; I didn’t hate it. Once again the episode seemed to go off in a hundred different directions, doing none of them particularly well.

The Zero Tolerance for Violence was stupid, too - okay, slushies aren’t classified as weapons, but how many times have people been shoved around in the hallways (half the time by Sue)? One slap and Santana’s out? WTF, man? And Rachel - not buying it. She went from completely self-absorbed to possibly throwing her future career away for a fellow student? THAT’S a big character change for her.

Very. I’ve no idea if IRL she’s married/partnered/gay/straight or whether she has kids or not, but you can easily imagine her in the kitchen of a Pennsylvania homestead taking care of a big family of German farmers (when she’s not helping plow or baling hay).

I do know she’s a real life bodybuilder and World Champion arm wrestler, so I’m guessing her body’s as solid in real life as she looks on the show.
