I know this futile, but does the OP know that what we call a hurricane, as opposed to a tropical storm, is completely arbitrary? And if we use metric units, you get a different number? I know God uses British units and all, but maybe he should upgrade to metric…?

Actually, it becomes a hurricane when it exceeds 74; in other words, hurricanes are greater than God.

There’s nothing magical about the number 74, whether it involves God or otherwise. As for hurricane wind speed, it is the point where an eye starts to develop, although in practice you will never see a hurricane with winds reported at 74 mph since they use increments of 5 knots to measure wind speed (converted to 5 mph increments in public advisories).

It’s not like something magic happens when the wind hits 75 miles an hour. A tropical storm becomes a hurricane because that’s when we decided a tropical storm becomes a hurricane.

You are quite WRONG about “completely arbitrary”. At 74 mph/64 knots sustained winds, the storm now takes on attributes that all weather experts agree is a hurricane

The measurement of a foot originated as the measurement of the pharoah’s foot, who was ‘god on Earth’. A yard was the stride of the pharoah equal to three feet, etc.
