Death Threats

Mike Bagnall, the head honcho at the LBMB, claims to have received death threats from members of this board. He said that he would forward these to TubaDiva.

I cannot think of a single SD regular who would even entertain the thought of pulling a stunt like this.

However, I have no problem entertaining the thought that Mike Bagnall is a liar.

How long does it take to send these emails to TubaDiva?

If I'm wrong about this I will apologise.

Right now I'm just ticked off that this jerk blackened the name of the SDMB without backing it up with proof.

What is the latest word on this?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Yeah right. How's he even going to be able to prove they came from anyone here anyway? It's not too difficult to make up a fake e-mail. I'm assuming of course that no one here is stupid enough to actually send mail from any machine they've posted here with. Wouldn't that make it pretty difficult to track an IP address?

Now we have the fucking fundies preaching all over the god-damn forums, poeple pretending to work for the govt. etc, etc...

What I want to know is Why the hell are we tolerating this shit???

Why not take a clue from the holy rollers and STOP NEW ENROLLMENTS!

Then weed out the freaks, and wait for things to calm down...and back to business.

A message board is not the appropriate place to deal with threats.

If credible threats have been made from anybody to anybody, the sender's ISPs should be informed, and the matter turned over to police.

Speculation, rumor-chasing, and character assassination will not make this all go away. I am as guilty as the next guy of now & then shedding more heat than light in some of my posts, but things have gone too far at this point. I am sure that neither the Chicago Reader nor the publishers of the Left Behind series want things to go any further, and I hope they will pursue the threat-makers, and put an end to this.

Let's not insult our new members, who with rare exception have really tried to fit in with us, by maligning the LB board & it's administrators. Let's also not provide threads & posts which can be copied back to the LB board to further inflame this situation, or to which LB members who do not mean well here feel obliged to post in defense of their board & admins.

My post did not malign the LB board.

Mike Bagnall made a very serious allegation.

I do not believe he should be allowed to make such an inflammatory accusation without being challenged as to it's veracity.

But as UncleBeer pointed out, it's no trick to fake emails, a possibility which didn't occur to me. Had I thought of it, I would not have bothered to start this thread.

But here it is.

I dont think wally's OP was out of line either. We have been accused, (As a group no less!) of something and are we wrong to demand to see some proof?

We, (SDMB regs) are being threatened, publicly, and I HAVE complained about it! I dont know how to report stuff to ISPs...isnt that what the Mods are for? And all we want is to be kept informed.

I will be the first to admit I am a little messed up right now, and honestly, I am reeeeeelly pumped about this shit, but I dont see anyone here going too far yet.

But I do think Wally has a point about Bagnall, though. It sounds like he (Baggins) hyperbolized a bit and then didn't want to back down. I'd also like him to put up or apologize, but I don't expect it.

some of the regs here have gotten them, the nastys, as far as I know death threats have not been included. AFAIK

I believe and hope that ours have come from lurkers not posters on this board.

How anonymous can they really be? Hotmail, for one, includes the sender's I.P. in mail header. I haven't experimented but I suspect others do as well. I agree that death threats should be dealt with by the police, not bulletin board admins. I know that every post I send does have my I.P. attached in some fashion, and my anonymity is based more on "security by obscurity," than anything else. Who knows, UBB may store your I.P. for each post.

Ummmmmm, how? *I* haven't seen any such threats, either first or second-hand. I can't just tell the cops "He said that he's getting threats!" and not have any evidence. Well, I suppose I COULD, but really, the cops need some evidence.

If someone's getting death threats, then the person receiving those threats should take it up with the law enforcement authorities. MY authority is very limited, I only control what goes on in the SDMB (and that as little as possible), I don't control what people do or write when they're not in this area.

However, I think it would be a good idea to NOT send death threats by any means. My cousin Vinnie takes a dim view of competition.

After reading Kellibellis quotes above I read into Formers threads, and also thos Of MojoLizard.

They allude to the possibility of violence, but never make it a direct threat. Apparently they know where the line is, and walk on it and near it but dont cross it.

More or less they are multiply interpretable comments, and as any law enforcement official would say "If you can take it more than one way, they have all the daylight needed to escpae prosecution, due to reasonable doubt that can easily be created".

So ban em and kick em off here, but it appears thats all we can really do. Sadly.

1) If the death threat(s) were real, then obviously Bagnall should take them to the proper authorities.

2) Bagnall told TubaDiva that he'd received death threats that presumably came from SDMBers, and promised to forward them to her.

3) Given that that allegation has just been sitting there for a week, it's reasonable of us to expect a word from TubaDiva regarding whether she's received any credible confirmation from Bagnall.

We don't need to see it, or be given details of what she's received - just (a) has she gotten any purported confirmation from him, and (b) is it at all credible as evidence of something that an ordinary person would interpret as a threat of violence?

(kelli - I'd regard what you were sent as a threat, btw. Geez, there are scum in this world.)

According to the "Captain Ed: Racist Scumbag" thread, MikeyLikesIt also left due to threats from a SDMB poster aimed at him and his fiancee. Chances are that these threats were made across state lines, therefore making them a Federal crime. Sounds like a job for the FBI or possibly a FORMER fbi AGENT. Anyone know where we might find one?

Skel, at 144 posts in 52 days, I'd say that you are participating "regularly" and that pretty much makes you a "reg." (Of course, if 74 of those posts happened over the last two days, that might indicate a sudden interest, rather than regular participation.)

Back on AOL, we had a couple of folks who always complained about the Evil R.E.G.s, but they posted so often that they were, indeed, regular posters. (One actually held some records for the number of submissions by any posters for a while.)

There is no "rule" on becoming a member of the Evil R.E.G.s. If you show up often enough to be recognized, you are one.
