Rhythmdvl’s What’s Your Concert Schedule this Season? part VI

Missed posting the Spring tour (Billy Joel, Warren Haynes Symphonic Celebration, etc.). Anyone see some good shows?

We’re gearing up to leave for Delfest in a couple days, and are excited to be kicking off the summer concert series. Among others, Delfest has:
[ul]
[li]Del McCoury (of course)[/li][li]String Cheese Incident [/li][li]Skaggs n’ Hornsby[/li][li]Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band[/li][li]Yonder Mountain[/li][li]Railroad Earth[/li][li]Bela Fleck n’ Abigail Washburn[/li][li]Carolina Chocolate Drops [/li][li]Devil Makes Three[/li][/ul]
And so on (a lot more than we listed, which is probably a lot more than we’ll get to hear). As usual, we’re taking the Devilling to the fests, not merely bringing him with us, so we picked a few of the more family-friendly ones (mostly stays home for single concerts). I think he’s most excited for Rev. Peyton at this one.

June brings us the New Mastersounds at the Cap Theater (incredible band in an incredible venue), then the Clearwater festival. Clearwater is the most family-friendly fest we hit (we’re taking the Devilling to most of these), but it’s got some powerhouses, including moe.Acoustic, Richard Thompson, Buckweat Zydeco, Tom Paxton, and Puss n Boots.

July brings us Crosby Stills and Nash at the Beacon, Gogol Bordello back at the Cap, then James Taylor at Bethel Woods.

Then it’s off to Gathering of the Vibes, with an absurd amount of music:
[ul]
[li]Widespread[/li][li]Fogerty[/li][li]Disco Biscuits[/li][li]Edward Sharpe & Mag 0s[/li][li]Umphreys[/li][li]Maceo Parker[/li][li]Rodrigo y Gabriela [/li][li]Dark Star Orch[/li][li]Joe Russo’s Almost Dead[/li][li]Keller Williams Grateful Grass[/li][li]Leftover Salmon[/li][li]Rusted Root[/li][li]Dumpstaphunk[/li][li]McLovins[/li][li]And so on …[/li][/ul]

August has us catching Bruce Hornsby and Pat Metheney and Lockn. Lockn’ has us leaving the little man behind with the grandparents, mostly because we want at least one fest to ourselves and because of the insane lineup:
[ul]
[li]Further (only 2014 gig) [/li][li]Allman Brothers[/li][li]Ratdog[/li][li]Phil n’ Friends [/li][li]Steve Winwood[/li][li]String Cheese [/li][li]Willie Nelson[/li][li]Hot Tuna acoustic [/li][li]Keller Williams Grateful Grass and Grateful Gospel [/li][li]Preservation Hall Jazz Band[/li][li]Cabinet[/li][li]Tom Petty[/li][/ul]

We’re really struggling not to buy tickets to Peach. We’re catching most of the bands already, but P-Funk will be there. And since the Dudeling was born to Flashlight, we want him to get a chance to catch them (we catch them a couple times a year, but in non-kid friendly indoor clubs).
So, Dopers, you always make me drool about shows we’re *not *seeing—what’s on your list?

Awesome Talking Heads tribute band this weekend

Old 97’s and Lydia Loveless in Indy early next month.

Zac Brown at Summerfest (Milw) on July 3rd

JC Brooks and the Uptown sound in Madison at outdoor festival in August for my birthday

Replacements with Hold Steady/Lucero opening at minor league stadium in St Paul in Sept.

That’s all I got for now

I’m so glad you’ve singled out the Big Damn Band! They’re just starting another tour that will take them all over the country as well as Ireland, Wales, England and Belgium. I hope more Dopers will go see them. They’re so much fun, and nice as hell. We’re seeing them again here in Chicago next Wednesday, the 28th, at Reggie’s Rock Club in Chinatown.

Our dream-come-true concert will be September 2 in London: Kate Bush. Finance-wise, that’s about 10-15 years’ worth of concerts right there.

Caught Bernie Worrell and Steve Kimock a while ago–some great Talking Heads moments. And Zac Brown’s always a great catch. We got the chance to take in the Zac Brown Incident at Lockn’ last year and it was out of this world. Good shows!

Right now the Deviling is singing ‘Hard to Tell’. His preschool teacher took it in stride when he now sings ‘Clap Your Hands’ for ‘If your Happy and you Know It’.

laugh Love it! Has he seen them live/met them? Is he in awe of Rev’s beard?

Had a ticket (fourth row, even) for Ennio Morricone in New York in a couple weeks, but that was cancelled.

Here Come the Mummies are gonna be at Mohegan Sun on June 21st.

Thanks to this thread, I looked up Gogol Bordello’s tour schedule. They’re at the House of Blues in Boston in July, so that’s a definite possibility.

Gogol’s cursed for us. We’ve had plans, we’ve even had tickets for two or three shows, but were waylaid each time. So maybe I shouldn’t have put them on the list.

Or fuck it, maybe I’ll start wearing purple.

I just found out Tom Petty is touring this summer, if I can make it to his show in Chicago, I’ll be happy. I haven’t seen him in quite a while.

Also, Summerfest actually has a good lineup this year.

What kind of show does Petty put on? I know a few songs fro the 80s, and I know he’s got chops enough to play with the Travelling Pillsburys, but frankly that’s about it. But it turns out he’s going to headline one of the Lockin’ nights, so it may be time to get up to speed.

Fogerty played there last year, and it was a bit odd–great material, but he played three and four minute songs one after the other. With breaks between them. Not that he left the stage, I must mean the music ended after every song, the three minutes of another, then it … stopped. Great set, but still seemed a little out of place when ten minute songs are the norm and seamless segues from one to another make up an hour-long feast.

But very interested in what it’ll be like.

I’m going to LOCKN too. I’m not much of a festie but the line up for this one is beyond amazing so I can’t miss it. Already have my VIP tickets and a VIP tent setup.

So far I also have a couple of Ratdog shows, Ringo Starr, Revivalists, Poor Man’s Whiskey and Tedeschi Trucks. There will certainly be more as more announcements are comings.

PS LOCKN is technically not the only Furthur show of 2014 because they had the Mexico run in January. It is interesting because it’s the original lineup that they only did in 2009. I saw the very first Furthur shows in Oakland and liked the double drummers a lot.

I’ve never seen Petty either but I have seen his band which performs as The Dirty Knobs without him. They are great so I’m looking forward to him.

Ooh, I forgot one. May 24th and 25th, Boston Calling music festival. Bands include:

Death Cab for Cutie
The Decemberists
Modest Mouse
The Head and the Heart
Tegan and Sara
Jenny Lewis
The Neighbourhood
Warpaint
and many more!

Only one I know for sure is on my list is Counting Crows/Toad the Wet Sprocket in Cincinnati, OH on July 20. I wouldn’t mind catching them as part of Master Musicians Festival, which would include this line-up:

Kelly Rae Burton
The Seas
The Little Ship
Willie Watson (formerly of Old Crow Medicine Show)
Sundy Best

Saturday, July 12th, 2014
(Gates open at 11am; First Performance begins at noon.)
MMF Songwriter Social
Tyler Childers
Coralee & the Townies
Fifth on the Floor
Stoll Vaughan
Apache Relay
St. Paul & the Broken Bones
Counting Crows

But I don’t think that one’s feasible at the moment.

Seconding, or thirding, on Rev Peyton.

If this year is like last year, three different teams of the School of Rock All-Stars will play there (and three other teams will play Lollapallosa.) All are under 18, and last year the youngest was 13, and these kids are amazing.

I have an easier time imagining a child being conceived to P-Funk…

Did Moogfest in Asheville, NC last month–Kraftwerk, Pet Shop Boys, MIA, Chic/Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder, etc. A great week if you’re a particular kind of nerd.

In a couple of weeks I’m going to the Ukulele World Congress in Nashville, IN. There are no headliners; it’s pretty much a weekend-long open mic and campout.

Hopefully going to see Jeff Tweedy solo in Louisville.

I’m sitting out Bonnaroo for the first time since 2007. I was going to sit out all the big summer fests, but the lineup at Forecastle (in Louisville) was just too good–Outkast, Beck, Jack White, Replacements, way too much other great stuff to list.

Next week I’m seeing Twin Forks, an Americana band whose lead singer is Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional fame. He’s a great singer and writer so it should be great (just downloaded their albums and haven’t listened to them too much yet.)

After that my next firm concert is Fall Out Boy and Paramore in July. While I like both of them, it’s in an arena so I’m not sure how intimate an experience it will be, but I haven’t seen them yet so I’m giving it a go.

The very next day the Warped Tour comes through. I’m not sure about that one because of having to hang out all day in the Florida summer heat. I will probably try to go though because Saves the Day is coming and they give great concert.

Then in September I am seeing Coheed and Cambria in their Neverender: IKSOSE3 tour, in which they will be playing the entirety of their In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 album in order.

A completely stereotypical bill for me since Chris Carrabba, Coheed, and Saves the Day are the three acts I’ve seen the most in concert.

I’m seeing Steve Miller Band and Journey (without Steve Perry) at a show next month. I’m not a huge fan of either, but I’m going because my friends wanted to go. They also want me to go to a Phish concert the next week, but I think I’ll sit that one out.

Much more importantly, I’m seeing my second- and third-favorite performers this August. My third-favorite, Eminem, is coming to Lollapalooza. I got the one-day pass, so I’ll be seeing whoever else performs that day as well.

He’s my second favorite. I’m not certain that I’m going, but I certainly want to.

If only Kesha can get out of her deal with her asshole producer, maybe she’ll go on tour again and I’ll be all set.

Just got back. Was eight feet from the stage. Sweet Mother did those guys kick ass!

Next weekend I’m hoping to catch at least part of the DC Jazz Festival (particularly Gregory Porter and Trombone Shorty).

In July I want to catch Artscape in Baltimore, primarily because of Cowboy Mouth. They play on a Friday evening, though, and getting north on Fridays is all but impossible…luckily I have some time to plan.

Just yesterday I bought tickets to go see Imelda May at the Birchmere on 8/1. I just discovered her a month or two ago, and I’m slightly obsessed. I even bought two tickets without knowing who – if anyone – will be going with me, which I never do (I hate going to shows alone). I have two friends in mind and am 99% sure that at least one of them will be interested, but I’m going to this show no matter what!

(Her newest album, Tribal, was released in the UK in April, but only two songs are available here so far…if only there were a way to get my hands on the rest of it before the 9/23 US release date…)

I’m also planning to see Freddy Cole (Nat “King” Cole’s brother) at Blues Alley in mid-August. I saw him in February and he’s still pretty amazing.

I feel your pain: I had fourth-row tickets to see B.B. King in October, but it was cancelled.

I had no idea they were touring, but apparently they won’t be in DC or Maryland. :frowning:

I’m heading up to Milwaukee on Friday for Summerfest. Looking forward to seeing Taj Mahal, Marcia Ball, and many, many others. I love Summerfest!
