What’s your summer concert season look like?

Just thinking of recent and upcoming shows I realized we’ve got a rather full calendar here—and it’s likely to grow as new things come across the plate. We’ve caught/are catching:

Balkan Beat Box
Clinto/P-Funk All-Stars
Gogol Bordello
Further
Gathering of the Vibes
Ian Anderson’s Thick as a Brick revival
Leonard Cohen

The two shows that stand out are Further, which we’re catching at Bethel Woods. An outstanding show in itself, the exciting thing is that it’ll be the Dudeling’s first concert. He’s only 2.5, but he does sing along with Uncle John’s Band, Casey Jones, Miracle, NFA and a couple others. Should be fantastic.

The other stand-out is the following week. The pinnacle performance at Gathering of the Vibes we’re looking forward to is an amazing trio: Bob Weir, Bruce Hornsby and Branford Marsalis. That Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and (I believe) Bill Kreutzmann’s bands will be there pretty much guarantees a hot mix and some unbelievable sets.

I know I’m missing some shows (Waters, Rush), but will fill in others as they pop up.

What’s your season looking like?
(Oh, we’re going to be in Ft Lauderdale for a week–Aug 13 to 21. Super-delux bonus points if you can help find us some good live music. Revolution Live has nothing at that time, nor does any other venue we’ve looked in to. Anything?)

Flying down to LA to see the Neville Brothers at the Hollywood Bowl, which will be one of the last times all four brothers will perform together outside Jazzfest. (Aaron is doing a solo thing, but Art Cyril and Charles will still play together occasionally)

Flying out to Denver to see Neil Young & Crazy Horse (Alabama Shakes opening) at the absolutely stunning Red Rocks amphitheater, which is always a great time.

Have tickets for Los Lobos, Jimmy Cliff, Counting Crows and John Fogerty here in Salt Lake.

Flying back down to New Orleans for VooDoo Festival in October.

By the end of the summer I will be just about out of frequent flyer miles, but will have some great memories in exchange.

(Say hey to Bob, Phil Mickey & Bill for me–I might zip down to Vegas for Furthur in September, but the lead guitar player’s apeing of Garcia is somewhat of a turnoff for me)

Funny, I appreciated Kadlecik more when he was with DSO. Not that he doesn’t have pretty big shoes to fill, but it can be done without … without something. Trying too hard, maybe? Nonetheless, it’ll be a fantastic night–it’s kind of like complaining that a show only lasted three hours.

Sounds like you’ve got a great season lined up. Can’t believe that after years of regularly catching P-Funk I’ve never taken in a Bootsy show. Weird. Any idea if Galactic will be in NO when you’re there? Would love to catch them or the New Mastersounds, but it doesn’t look like there’s anything major going on.

Wow, Neil Young & Crazy Horse and Alabama Shakes. That should be great!
About a year ago Alabama Shakes played on our local riverboat “Brews Cruise” and also played a small local bar for one of my friend’s birthday party. They’ve kind of taken off since then.

We have a pretty full calendar already as well…

Iron & Wine w/ Dr. John at Ravinia
Wilco + Andrew Bird at a baseball park in the western burbs (west of Chicago, that is)
Fiona Apple at Chicago Theater
**Lollapalooza **- all 3 days. Too many bands to list, but most excited for Afghan Whigs reunion and Jack White.
My Morning Jacket w/ Band of Horses at Pritzker Pavillion (Millennium Park)
Riot Festin September. Iggy & the Stooges and Elvis Costello are two of the headliners, and also excited that The Jesus & Mary Chain are on the bill, along with a lot of other great acts (including Gwar, who I have to see once because… it’s Gwar.).

We’re also looking at going to several other shows but they’ll be game-time decisions. This list includes Tenacious D, Loretta Lynn, Garbage, and Peter Gabriel (doing the entire So album.)

Oops, just missed the edit window. Two other shows I forgot about: Soul Rebels and the Stooges Brass Band. Both great bands from NOLA and both will be playing at SPACE in Evanston.

If May counts, I saw M83 last week and they were amazing. They’re coming back through Houston in October which seems awfully soon, but I would happily go see them again. Next weekend I’m going to Houston’s Summer Fest, where I’m most excited bout The Flaming Lips playing Dark Side of the Moon. But there’s a bunch of good people playing, including Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg, Best Coast, Two Door Cinema Club, Maps & Atlases, Fitz & The Tantrums, Big Freedia, and lots of others.

I’m seeing The Head and the Heart the week after that, and I’ve seen them before but just as an opener. Later in the month I’m seeing El-P and Killer Mike and I’m really excited about that. I love El-P and have been listening to his new album non-stop. Killer Mike is also pretty great and has a great new album.

I don’t have any others planned out after that, but I’m guessing some more will pop up that I’ll go to.

I’m going to see Carmina Burana on June 2!!!

I was pretty excited that VooDoo announced ol’ Bootsy would be playing this year, along with Neil Young & Crazy Horse (and Green Day, whom I know nothing about) although the full line-up won’t be announced for a couple more months.

Galactic will almost certainly be playing as well, as VooDoo Fest does a good job of showcasing both national “Big Name” acts and local New Orleans talent…
After thinking about it this afternoon, I checked into flights to Vegas (for Furthur) and saw that I can fly roundtrip for under $120. Guess I can’t pass up Bob & Phil afterall…

Really looking forward to the shows and Red Rocks is truly one of the world’s finest live music venues.

I saw Alabama Shakes here in SLC a few months back and was quite impressed with Brittney’s (the lead singer) vocal presence; That young lady can belt it out like no one’s business.

They are sure to hit it big on the music festival circuit, headlining right alongside the big name acts.

So far I have four shows on my list: Ray Davies, Ringo (w/Todd), Peter Gabriel and John Fogerty.

At this moment, the only concert I’m going to is Kristin Chenoweth, next month, here in Chicago. Haven’t seen any other tours coming through here which looked appealing – at this rate, it’ll be the first summer in four or five years in which I haven’t seen a rock concert.

So far the only one we have tickets for is The Global Warming Tour (Aerosmith and Cheap Trick) in Oakland in August.

Hey, another Neil Young at RR! Seeing that show as well as Bassnectar, Passion Pit, Tenacious D and Jack White at Red Rocks. The big event, however, is 30 Phish shows. My first tour at 32, better late than never!

I shot Mickey Hart Band last week in Denver, there was no one there but he was great and just as nice as could be. Also just saw Grouplove, highly recommended.

That’s funny, as the Mickey Hart show here in Salt Lake was sold out for a month beforehand.

He is a good guy, and one of the most knowledgeable people on Earth when it comes to the history of percussion and drumming.

I’m really looking forward to getting back to Red Rocks, as it’s been a few years since I was last able to hit a show there. The last time I saw Neil play live was in New Orleans (Jazzfest 2009) so I am definitely ready to hear ol’ Shakey again.

Recently kicked off the summer with a radio station festival in Chula Vista featuring The Wanted and Maroon 5, along with a host of people I’d never heard of.

June 9: One Direction, Las Vegas
June 16: One Direction, Oakland, Ca
July 19: Big Time Rush, Irvine Ca - VIP/Meet & Greet
July 22: Big Time Rush, Mountain View, Ca
October 6: Justin Bieber, Oakland, Ca - VIP/Meet&Greet

Wow, how do you folks afford all this music?
(I know, you’ve got better priorities…can you let my daughter know that she has to transfer to a cosmetology college?)

So, I’m just going to Summerfest, where people like Ben Folds, Jimmy Cliff, The B-52s, Ziggy Marley, The Roots and ZZ Top are on the many free stages.

Wow. Ian Anderson is doing Thick as a Brick. Gabriel is doing So. Waters is bringing the Wall back. Any other revivals out there? Maybe Rush is going to do 2112 during one of their nights…

I’m crossing my fingers that the world IS going to end this year otherwise that whole “retirement” thing is not gonna happen. That having been said, I forgot to add I have front row One Direction tickets for July 2013!

Oh! I was in loose talks to go to this with some friends from HS - what happened to that? Hmmm!

The dead of summer isn’t big for concerts in Central Florida, ironically the one that does come is Warped – ironic because it’s held outside in the sweltering heat. I’m going this year to see All Time Low, New Found Glory, and Fireworks. Fortunately ATL and NFG are at the same famousness level which means that they will be competing for the same stage which means I will probably get to see them both, but there’s a chance Fireworks will be playing at the same time as one of the other ones. It happened last time I went, in the mid 2000s to see Coheed and Cambria, Anberlin, and Bad Religion, I had to choose between Anberlin and Bad Religion.

This time I’m bringing a pen and paper, to write down bands. Last time I went I saw tons of great bands but couldn’t remember their names (they weren’t even in the roster.)
