Early March 2020 - when Covid was a thing but masks and stocking up on toilet paper (/rolls) was not yet a thing, I bought tickets to see Genesis at the O2 in London in October that year. That show was twice re-scheduled due to plague restrictions (first April 2021, then October 2021); then once again because - I reckon Mike Rutherford - tested positive. The thrice-rescheduled O2 show finally happened - at last - in March 2022.
I’ve also seen
Rick Wakeman (Grumpy Christmas tour 2021, Basingstoke UK)
Steve Hackett (Seconds Out Plus 2021 in Oxford)
Johnny Marr / Blondie (last night in Birmingham)
(masks were for all optional)
I live close to Glastonbury - that festival has been “fallow” the last two years. Paul McCartney (seen him more than three times) is touring the US and he’ll turn 80 later this month and then play the show. Diana Ross is going to play the Legend stage.
Other than that - The Rolling Stones are playing Hyde Park in London in Summer. Tears for Fears are touring the UK. The Who are touring the US and have said they’ll tour the UK in 2023. The various incarnations of The Dead are touring - but they’re not going to do Europe (although…50 year anniversary Bob Weir?)
(yeah, there’s common thread of - as my wife put it - “seeing them before they are dead” but with the exception of Johnny Marr I had seen them all before several times)
So…what have you seen since since the Before Times? Whatcha got tix to see this year?
We saw Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs on Friday. Our friends had bought the tickets a couple years ago, and covid had forced the rescheduling of the show twice already.
I’ve been to a LOT. Venues started to open last fall and since then I’ve been full steam ahead:
Pat Benatar
Squeeze/English Beat
Japanese Breakfast
BTS
Chvrches
Marina
Bjork
Twice
Mitski
Chai
Dua Lipa
Rina Sawayama
Lady Gaga
I also have tickets already to see the following:
Aurora
OMD
Tears for Fears
Yann Tiersen
Don Giovanni (San Francisco Opera)
Halsey
Kraftwerk
Tears for Fears
Corrine Bailey Rae
Crowded House
Florence + the Machine
B-52s
Elton John
Pet Shop Boys
Mylène Farmer
My daughter and I saw King Crimson in September 2021 in Dayton.
I have four tickets to see The Breeders on August 11 of this year in Indianapolis. My son and I are definitely going. Not sure what I am going to do with the other two tickets. Anyone wanna go?
I was supposed to see Yes in Zurich and the Psychedelic Furs in London in Spring 2020.
The Furs were postponed twice until April 2022, and in the end I couldn’t go because my 7th grade daughter’s school rock band was performing the same night (irony not lost on me!). But I will now be seeing the Furs in NYC in June (fingers crossed).
Yes was rescheduled twice and was supposed to happen a couple weeks from now in Zurich. But they postponed again, to May 2023. Originally it was supposed to be on a weekend so I was going to take the whole family. But in 2023 it will be a Tuesday night, so it will possibly be just me (unless I make my girls miss school).
But they are still doing their UK tour, so I am flying to London to see them on 21 June. That will be 9 days before the Furs in NYC!
Saw the Black Crows last August and had a great time. I’ll go see Elton John again this July. Not really interested in seeing any of the older bands again as I have either already seen them or it would be a let down to see them in their old age.
I would go see Billie Eilish or Miley if I were able to get one of my younger relatives to go with me so I don’t look like a pitiful old man all by myself. Not my subject matter taste but they appear to be great performers.
Planning to go see Patton Oswalt perform standup next month; not a music artist, of course, but in the same vein of public gatherings. This show was actually supposed to happen back in February, but Patton broke his foot and had to reschedule. It also snowed in Texas a couple days before the original date, which I had thought was going to delay the show anyway.
My gf wants to go see George Thorogood. I’m on the fence. He’s 72, and I’m not sure I want to see a 72 year old who is bad to the bone. Anyone seen him recently?
See, this doesn’t bother me. If I like an artist enough to want to see them, I’ll go even if it turns out I’m the oldest person there. Which has happened sometimes lately. Of course, when I go to the opera I’m one of the youngest, so it balances out.
I applaud your passion for live music! What an awesome list!
I’ve only gone to comedy shows. Letterkenny Live (scheduled for March 2020, rescheduled twice to April 2022) and just last night I saw Joe Pera. I bought tickets to see (non-comedian) Courtney Barnett this August.
I did an N95 mask for Letterkenny as the crowd was larger. For Joe Pera I just wore a surgical mask. I’ll probably wear an N95 again for Courtney Barnett (same venue).
Lizzo just announced a tour and I’m an obsessed fan but I’m not going to see her in an arena, covid or no covid. I saw her in a “small venue” in Detroit in 2018 and it was probably about the best show I’ve ever seen. I’m sure she’ll put on a fantastic arena show but I’ll save my arena ticket money for the home theater version.
I saw Judas Priest twice in the past two years. One was an arena, the other was indoors just a few months ago. I also saw Blue Oyster Cult in a small place last year, I wore a mask to this one since it was pretty crowded, though not everyone was wearing one.
Was supposed to see Halestorm in February in Frankfurt, but that part of the tour got cancelled.
Going to see Jerry Cantrell in June in Zurich.
In November we will see Porcupine Tree, Pretty Reckless and Halestorm opening for Alter Bridge, all in Zurich, but different venues. Will be a busy month.
We went to see Godspeed You! Black Emperor a few weeks ago - the venue is vaxed & masked (though the woman behind us nursed a drink for much of the show and kept her mask off, because there’s always someone), and it was great.
We have tickets from June, 2020 to see Steve Earle, supposedly that will happen this July…
Like @SwissMan, a comedian, not music. We had tickets to see Paula Poundstone in Atlanta in May 2020, but it was canceled, obviously. So having moved to the Boston area since then, we saw her here last December. Vaccine cards were checked, and masks were required, except when drinking.
Good show, maybe not quite as good as when we saw her on Vegas, pre-TFG.
My problem is not enough disposable income to see even half the bands I want to. But SUMMERFEST in Milwaukee hits the middle of the “Music/Cheap/Old Guy” Venn Diagram. So I’ve been almost every year, almost every day, just to see the bands on the free stages.
And every year it seems, I get to see a couple of my bucket list performers for $0 (every day has a promotion, like “Bring a slightly-used kids book” … and there’s a Goodwill on the way).
This year the bucket list guys are Todd Rundgren, Midge Ure and Modest Mouse.
And I’m really looking forward to the Black Crowes, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Steve Miller Band, Smithereens, Corrine Bailey Rae, Guster, Violent Femmes, Stone Temple Pilots, lots of British Invasion bands, 80s Soul and Hair Bands… and let’s see if I still like Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes.
I’ve seen a lot of bands in the last year:
Alice Cooper twice (and again this September)
The Struts
The Offspring
Tedeschi-Trucks Band
Lynyryd Skynyrd (I went because Tesla was opening, but they got Covid so I missed them)
Dead and Co twice (and twice more this summer)
Bucky Cherry
Evanescence
Halestorm
Judas Priest with Queensyche
and this weekend I was at the m3 festival, where I saw Lizzy Borden, Lillian Axe, Skid Row, Tesla, Blue Oyster Cult, Tony Harnell, Stephen Pearcy, Tom Keifer, Doro, Kix, and Vain
Coming up this summer: I’ll be seeing the Offspring again tomorrow, Pretty Reckless next weekend,
Dead and Co two more times, Alice Cooper in September, George Thorogood with Sammy Hagar, Halestorm (with the Pretty Reckless and The Warning), and Tom Keifer/LA Guns/ Faster Pussycat
We saw the Mavericks in October of 2021 and Brit Floyd a few weeks ago. That’ll be it for us for awhile since we’re planning a trip to Florence in the fall and want to save our bux for that.
So, after three postponements, this concert did happen. I’d forgotten that the seats were front row center, which was great, but we were among the very few people in the room who were masked. Interestingly, I’d guess that the median age in the room was more than 60, but as we see in a lot of places, people are just done worrying about it.
