This was one of the tougher lists to choose from. It had both a fair amount that I hadn’t seen and some that didn’t really move me enough to be great. No tough calls to decide which to vote for. In fact I only picked 6.

I only voted for Paths of Glory, which is a great movie. One of these days I really have to see Bridge on the River Kwai, I know.

Other: The brilliant Korean war film MEN IN WAR (Mann, '57)

Men in War Men in War (1957) - IMDb (1957) is being added to the overflow file for later voting.

I was confused by the retitling of Battle of the River Plate (best war movie), but it’s there under Pursuit of the Graf Spee.

If there’s a different movie about the Graf Spee – or Battle of the River Plate – please link to the IMDb page on it/them.

Thanks.

Favorite is The Devils Disciple - but I tossed a couple other votes around as well.

Your vote wasn’t there when I did the summaries at

Some curious absences on the list:

South Pacific (technically more of a musical than a war film, but I love how un-stage-y it looks compared to Josh Logan’s other Rodgers & Hammerstein films, and oh my God, France Nuyen at her Barely Legal-est!) This gets my vote.

The Steel Helmet (which had the virtue of being about the Korean War while it was still going on, but was a little dismissable as propaganda)

Battle Circus (Also released-barely-while the war was still going on, this was notable for starring Humphrey Bogart and for touching on some of the same themes as the much-later MAS*H, though much less broadly satirical)

Thanks for the additions.

You’ll find Battle Circus

– and if you hurry you can cast its first vote!

I’ll be adding the other two to the Overflow File which I hope to be dealing with soin the next few days.

I’d swear there’s a Jeff Chandler movie set in Korea that opens with all the members of a squad (or platoon) walking along an open road in file, and all of the GIs are identifed by name with subtitles.

Does this ring a bell with anyone? Or am I misremembering Chandler’s participation?

Action in the North Atlantic should definitely go into the (1940s) Overflow File.

My other was Strategic Air Command. It’s cold war, so I guess that should count as a war film.

You can vote for it in

Thanks.

Two threads?

That’s madness! I can’t keep this straight.

I’ll add it in over there. Disregard the “other”.

Believe me, but I do understand the notion of keeping things straight. I’m juggling 12 polls and several comments threads – all on War Movies.

I’m just now adding this one:

Action in the North Atlantic Action in the North Atlantic (1943) - IMDb (1943)

Sorry for the delay. Getting this Overflow File in shape has been a beast!
