It’s the most…wonderful…time…of the year! The time of year when your normal TV activities are interrupted by ridiculous, pretentious, stupid, vacuous, and generally hated commercials designed solely to make us buy crap just because it’s the holidaze.
Please post your most hated holiday-themed commercials here. With links, if need be.
I harbor immense hatred for car commercials year-round. They are too damn common, and symbolize the severe car obsession here in the U.S. When I start seeing as many commercials for new and used bicycles, scooters, and motorcycles as I see for cars, I will know we have finally progressed as a country.
This, combined with my disdain for commercialized Christmas, makes all holiday-themed car commercials qualify as the most hated for me.
I hate, hate, hate those commercials for the mandarin oranges or clementines or whatever mini-citrus they want to call them. I refuse to divulge the brand name because there is no way I’m going to help them sell their product. I hope enough of you have seen them to know what I’m talking about.
The premise of the commercials is that apparently these things are like crystal meth to little kids and, should their supply be cut off, they turn into evil, maniacal brats willing to do terrible things to the poor soul who crosses them. The parents are always the unfortunate ones to reach for the last one, realizing too late that they’ve just incurred their little hellion’s wrath. They cower in fear and then fall all over themselves trying to ensure that their devil spawn’s pipeline will never run dry again.
Back when I was a kid, these were only in season around Christmastime. I fondly remember when Pops would bring home the one and only box of mandarins we got all year. They were just the right size for a young 'un and were so easy for them to peel and were packed with flavor. Looking back, they were special part of the season for me. I just don’t see why this company has to resort to these kind of tactics in order to sell their product.
Now, get off my lawn or I’ll pelt you with the darned things.

I’ll continue the Doper blackout on mentioning what I think the product’s name is but I must admit I haven’t seen the commercial. Just out of curiosity, isn’t this product now available year-round or am I thinking of another brand of small orange-colored citrus fruit?
I rarely watch commercials as 90% of the TV I watch is Netflix or HBO, but Mr. Athena is watching football today and I caught the Verizon Thanksgetting ad.
WTF? Turning ThanksGIVING, that is, something about giving thanks for the goodness in your life, into ThanksGETTING, oh look, I’m GITTIN’ SOME STUFF.
Really struck me the wrong way. I get it that they’re doing some sort of giveaway, but that’s not what came through on the commercial, at least not for me. And regardless, it’s still not in the spirit of the holiday.
I’m heading back to my commercial-free life now. That one was enough for me.
Not so much a commercial but a station break kind of thing. We get a cable channel called AWE which has lots of travel and “lifestyle” shows for wealthy people. I liked some of their travel info shows, However, last year they started putting commercials up saying how they were going to say Merry Christmas, not happy holidays, because war on Christmas or whatever. I mean, say Merry Christmas if you want, but don’t be an asshole about it.
I don’t watch their channel anymore since they seem to hold my views in contempt.
Luckily, the seasonal commercials I hate the most are done for the year; the stupidest of them being where it’s the politician speaking & then at the end they need to say “& I approve this message”. Ummm, has anyone not approved the message that they had a professional write for them & then they took the time to record?
There is a law involving who can and cannot pay for campaign ads, and the candidate’s own payments are those they endorse. It helps the campaign finance people keep tracking of who’s paying.
