I have been thinking that a membership to the SDMB would make a nice gift for my spouse. If I sign her up as a surprise, am I (or she) apt to get into trouble because it looks like I am trying to make a sock?
It’s my understanding that the other person needs to create the account herself, but that once the account exists, you’re allowed to buy her subscription for her. At the very least, in order to even be able to sign her up, you’d need access to her e-mail account. And she’d probably prefer to pick her own username herself, too.
IANAM, and anything said by any of the Powers that Be obviously supercedes this.
I would think the usual advice is true here as well - email an administrator, explain what you want to do and see what they say.
I’d assume they’d let you do something like that - but then IANAMEither.
Well, I did think about sending an emial but to be honest I have had better luck getting responses to threads.
At the present time we do not offer gift subscriptions, but it is under consideration for further down the road.
Apparently to offer this would take some coding workarounds to the subscription setup, it’s not just something that we can turn on and off, it’s going to take some tech tweaking.
So right now, yeah, what you need to do is send them to the board, get them a guest trial pass, and THEN offer to pay their subscription.
