Rico and the mods at large

I believe you erred in closing the thread entitled What do they do in British Strip Clubs

While the question in the OP had been answered there is the possibility that someone could have come by and added to the answer. Certainly to head off any “swipe your card here” jokes, which I might add are precisely the reason why the Dope is such an entertaining read, is not a valid reason to close the thread. The reason I did this on the board and not through e-mail is that this is a trend I have been noticing as of late. Recently it seems mods have been closing threads that they personally find icky on inappropiate. The Netflix porn thread immediately springs to mind as another example. We are all adults here and its ok for us to discuss things like porn, strip clubs and many other objectionable topics. The moderators should stick to policing trolls, moving misplaced threads and enforcing the don’t be a jerk rule. Us Dopers can decide for ourselves whether a topic is too icky to discuss.

I saw that. Lame lame lame modding.

I agree. There’s way too much pre-emptive thread closing around here lately. Closing a thread that has long since gotten waaaaaaaaaay off track is one thing, but closing one because it has the slightest potential to drift a bit is ridiculous. Some of the new mods, particularly, seem to think it’s their job to be our morality police, and I wish they’d knock it off. Seriously, cut it out. It’s annoying.

We actually aren’t all adults here. There are a number of teenagers. Whcih is not an excuse as far as I’m concerned for closing threads, as “won’t someone please think of the children” is bullshit.

Other than that nitpick, you’re exactly right.

Teenagers can’t be adults?

No, they’re teenagers.

Oh for fuck’s sake, do you really want to go here with someone who’s agreeing with you?

Not everyone who posts to the Straight Dope Message Board has attained the legal age of majority as set in the jurisdiction in which they reside. Usually, those who have not reached this age of majority are not referred to as ‘adults,’ as the term ‘adult’ is generally understood to mean ‘those who have reached the age of majority.’ It was to those teenagers I referred when I said that some posters were not adults but were instead teenagers. But, yes, those who have reached the ages of 18 or 19 are both teenagers and adults, so in answer to your question, it is possible to be both teenage and adult at the same time.

Boy, you showed me that time. You really got me good. Congratulations.

depending on jurisdiction and topic, answer may vary

An 18- or 19-year-old is still a teenager, but has still attained the legal age of majority, in most jurisdictions. They are therefore both.

And Otto? Jeez, calm the fuck down. Do you really have to take every post which contains even the slightest element of disagreement with you as a personal affront? Good Christ, you get worked up easily.

You’re the one that started picking nits not me.

Can we get back on topic please.

I was wondering how true Scotsmen handle things at strip joint.
Now I shall never know, unless I start a thread on them.

Completely calm here boss.

Ah, the “You started it!” defense. Lovely. Sorry, didn’t mean for my agreement with 99% of your OP to get between you and your windmill.

It’s so hard to tell with you, y’know. :stuck_out_tongue:

Nah… I disagree with the OP. The thread was in General Questions and it was an innately ambiguous question which really didn’t fit well with “my” perception of what General Questions should be. But hey… just my 2 cents worth. My perception might not be the majority view of course. Perhaps it should have simply been moved the Mundane forum?

I was disappointed to see it get closed so quickly. Although I was one of the folks who managed to squeeze an answer in, my knowledge of UK strip club goings-on is based entirely on what I’ve gleaned from reading, radio, film and limited conversation with folks from thereabouts. I was looking forward to hearing from more people who had better information.

I think it’s intersting that the Google ads below are for brain injury rehab.

I don’t know what it means, exactly, but it’s intersting…

The level of consistency in thread closing could certainly be improved. Recently, there was a MPSIMS thread which had arguably morphed, without any particularly ‘adult’ language, into a Pot thread. In spite of the fact that it had generated quite a bit of discussion, and the fact that the mod who closed it (can’t recall who without looking it up) mentioned it belonged more in the Pit now, it was summarily closed, rather than moved. Couldn’t follow the logic there at all, and it seemed, as someone noted above, nothing more than preemptive censorship, with the mod’s sensibilities about where it might go overriding common sense and the principles of the board.

Didn’t seem worth making a fuss about then, but if better practice in general can result from this thread, then so much the better.

This is the fist time I’ve ever pitted a mod. been here 4years now.

But DAMN! Rico, so what if a few people DID make jokes? How bad could they be? I mean, you have read threads in the pit before, haven’t you??

Redeem yourself sir! And open that thread back up!

My curiousity has been struck…

Unfortunately, we don’t get to handle things, parts, or equipment at strip clubs, in general. However, if we were allowed to handle “things”, we would sprinkle sugar on “them”, then lick it off.

Am I the only one that thought this thread was going to accuse the moderators of being tied to the mafia?
