Am I the only one that thought this thread was going to accuse the moderators of being tied to the mafia?
No, apparently both of you thought that.
Gah! :smack:
I’m adding to my gripes The founding fathers thread should have been moved to Great Debates. Any thread about politics will almost certainly end up as a debate unless its a pretty specific factual question.
I dunno. If the question were actually what do they do in British strip clubs that would be one thing. And then it should have been moved. But it was a specific question about the lack of pound notes. Which was answered. And it was in GQ.
So maybe Rico wasn’t being a prude so much as particularly GQish.
But if we really want to know (and I know I do)
let’s see how that goes .
I thought about moving it once it was in IMHO. I believe there is a place in IMHO for low-key debate. I moved a thread that some non-GD habitues were finding interesting (about the electoral college) to GD a couple weeks ago, and, quite honestly, regretted it. The experts and cite monsters swarmed in, and the people who were in it swarmed out.
Mind you, I don’t want to see IMHO turned into GD Lite, but I don’t think every thread that could lead to debate needs to go to GD. In my opinion.
Interesting. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard some of the mods and admins before refer to IMHO as GD Lite. But hey, it’s your territory now. Do as you wish.
The battle is not always to the strong nor the race to the swift, but that’s the way to bet it.
For a split second, I thought that the OP was going to accuse the mods of racketerring. :smack:
I was very annoyed by this as well. For one thing, why is it OK to describe a joke but not OK to tell that joke? What’s the difference?
But more importantly, one single answer does not justify closing a thread because that prevents other posters from providing any corrections or supplemental information. Message boards are useful because the answers are “peer reviewed” by other posters. How can I trust one poster’s reply if it hasn’t had a chance to be verified or corrected by others?
As I read it it sounded like this in my head: “Rico…Suave” A bit obscure but in an instant that song popped in my head.
Man, I hear that stupid song every freakin’ time I see his name.
Please Og make it stop!
It’s not a forum I was terribly familar with before a month ago. I may also come to that conclusion. I think I’ve already taken a step in that direction with my regrets over moving the thread I referenced. We’ll see.
Seems to me what happened to that thread illustrates a good reason for IMHO to in fact be GD Lite – a forum midway between GD and the Pit, where one can have a discussion without the usual GDers dominating and scaring away everyone who doesn’t want to wade through massive screeds, while at the same time maintaining a more civil level of discourse than the Pit. MPSIMS is generally too frothy to fill that role, IMHO.
Actaully what I keep thinking, particularly in terms of this OP, is that threads have been closed for racketeering.
MPSIMS: The Latte of the SDMB.
Now if I can only convince my brain to replace “Rico Suave” with “RICO”, I won’t have to worry about going insane …
Well, not as quickly, anyway.
Now the refrain from the hip-hop song is stuck with me:
Puerto Rico - hooooo
Puerto Rico - hooooo
Thanks!
I don’t believe it! You actually made sense!
From the Forum descriptions:
IMHO - … For frank exchanges of views on less-than-cosmic topics. …
Frrom that description, it doesn’t seem to bar discussing other’s viewpoints, as I have seen other mods say in times past. So, what is it? State an opinion and never comment on any other post in the thread? Or allow back and forth discussion on issues of minor impotance?
His name is Rico and he dances on the sand
Just like that river twisting through a dusty land
And when he shines he really shows you all he can
Oh Rico Rico dancer across the rio grande
It’s the word exchanges that seems to allow discussion (or light debate, if you wish to call it such) to me.
