Your most/least successful thread?

What has been your most successful thread on the SDMB?

You can define “most successful” any way you like, but given that most of us hate to see our posts sink out of view like bricks in deep ocean water, I think there’s a probable consensus that a really successful thread has to at least make it to the second page, let alone get out of single digits.

I think of this because I’ve started, oh, maybe a dozen threads in the year and a half since I registered, and in all that time none of them has really taken off. Oh, sure, some of them have done okay, like this one, but no moon rockets, know what I mean?

And then my wife, whom I love dearly, joins up, and with her very first thread is threatening to reach the third page. No, really, check it out. Not that I’m competitive or anything, but man…

So what do you consider your best effort? Your most successful thread? Whether longest-lived, most responses, highest ratio of quality to quantity, whatever?

And, as a natural corollary, feel free to reference your orphaned children, the threads that you feel unfairly submarined into the blackness, that you were looking forward to sharing and seeing hundreds of people contribute to, but that spiraled unceremoniously into the inky void. I feel your pain.

I started one awhile ago in MPISMS I think, about how I got a letter from TIME magazine stating that since I was a successful professional, they would give me a nice discount and then I pointed out that I was a college student and working part time at a drugstore blah, blah, blah. It was supposed to funny and interesting…
I think 3 people replied. Someone posted to it and started talking about something else that was stupid and it died a lonely death, which is probably a good thing. I really haven’t started too many before or after that and I think I know why now. Oh well.

Most successful:Name my fish, win a (cash!) prize 66 replies, 468 views

Anybody have an old Holley carb catalog? 5 replies, ? views

Yes, it has to be Racist Scholarships. There’s nothing like everyone (well, a few people, anyway) thinking you are racist. No, seriously, it was an interesting thread that generated a lot of enlightening conversation, and I wish to thank deeply everyone who participated. And hey, if anyone wants to start’er up again, I’ll be there.

Well I think I’ve started a total of like 4 threads the entire time I’ve been here. The most successful one was “a little help?” in IMHO, it made it to the second page and I’m happy that so many people cared enough to give me advice.

Yeah. I personally contributed probably half of those posts. The most successful one I started myself was on favorite hard liquors. That also lasted a couple pages. I’d provide a link if I knew how.

My most successful for posts/views is definately “Very Vaguely Creepy.” My most successful for humor is likely “I just ate 3 mushrooms”, and my most successful for notoriety is probably “A monkey that I wish for.”

My least successful was probably either the ones that were never replied to, the ones with only one reply but the reply was “that’s a stupid question.” or ones that I’ve posted thinking they’d be funny, but ended up being bashed for being ‘insensitive’ or something.

The first thread I ever started was pretty successful – I asked a question, BobT answered it and that was the end of the story.

The thread I started that had the longest legs, which I guess is what the OP was essentially about, reached 70 posts. Modest, but I was happy to see it progress.

Sigh… longest thread that I started was on the world’s best chocolate. I even got chocolates in the mail for that one!

OTOH, a very embarrassing response to an interesting question that I have been thinking about recently. Seems that not many folks are interested in responding so I have a string of zero/minimal answered threads. I feel like I am being “shunned”, you know that Amish practice of totally ignoring a “sinner” by not answering questions and completely ignoring a individual. Or, heaven forbid, I’m boring…

Then I say WTF anyway; there’s close to 10,000 dopesters and most of us aren’t mentioned in the “SDMB most favorite…”
So I go on posting the silliest threads with little response but someday I’ll hit the big one…I hope, or at least I think I hope…

Cool! I’m up for some shameless self-promotion!

My two most successful (fun) threads wereA Panel of Experts Solves All the Worlds Woes! over in GD and Oh, For the Love of Chocolate Christ on a Cookie Cross!! in the Pit.

My least successful threads were amazingly weak. I’ve had a few of them sink to the second page in just a few hours. That’s bloody embarrassing and I don’t think I’ll resurrect any of those. I have yet to post a thread (that I can remember) didn’t get any replies.

You know, until I actually did a search, I could have sworn that this was my shortest thread.

As it turns out, I had a three-way tie, although two of them were questions in ATMB, so I don’t feel too bad about those (Note to the other threads: I just want to say that there were so many contenders for shortest thread, and that you all deserving of oblivion, but only three of you were really, really, really short).
The shortest thread that I was actually hoping would go somewhere was:
The Internet is Truth.

The longest thread I’ve got is Urges you ignore.

Most Successful thread?

Unusual things that Turn You On

Least Successful:

Any Other.

Most successful was Domestic Partners.
Least? I can’t remember.

My most successful was My First Thread. In ATMB. 66 replies. Full of substantial, profound thought, witty repartee, hijacks and whatnot. Real proud of that one. Must’ve been the subject line.

Least successful? I won’t point it out, but I complained about my job and stuff that was happening there. People didn’t seem particularly interested…

“The Last Broadcast”?

I had said I didn’t get the ending and asked for help. No replies.

Woo-hoo!

Palandine, who still doesn’t get the ending

I think my average is okay… I don’t think I have any two pagers but that doesn’t bug me.

My “Most exotic place” thread is successful in that it almost had Lola ready to rip my head off for posting porn that didn’t include her… she re-read it and we have been laughing about it since.

I’ve noticed that posting threads that are of a suggestive nature get a lot more attention than the sometimes mundane details of the daily grind. Quantity doesn’t always mean quality so 20 replies is as good as a hundred in some cases. No replies pretty well sucks the big one.

This is kind of weird, in that the OP has mysteriously disappeared (probably after the software switch), but I swear to God I started “Best Sequential Thread Titles”, the thread that inspired countless sequels. (Don’t believe me? Do a search and see whose name comes up as the Topic Starter.)

I’ve had many threads sink into oblivion with nary a response, but “LOCAL Onion Headlines” is the most recent.

One of my best was A condom, Nads hair removal system and a pair of underwear. 49 replies. So was Why did I do this?, with 55 replies. They were both the same week, so that was quite the happy time for me. Both involve body hair to some extent, so that must say something.

This thread sucked: pricciar!! How’d your comp. work out?

There were a few that only got about 3 replies, but they were GQs that were answered quickly. Pretty funny going through my posts!

I can stop a thread like a brick wall. I did, however, start “Musicians I hate,” which went like gangbusters for a few weeks. I was proud of that one.

Otherwise my threads seem to die pretty quickly, not that I start many. Perhaps it’s because by incredibly massive intellect causes me to write posts that cannot be improved on. Or, maybe I’m just kinda boring.

Damn. That didn’t work at all! Look at that link!. How about this:

One of my best was “A condom, Nads hair removal system and a pair of underwear” at http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=39016 49 replies.
