This coincides with a notion I’ve wanted to revive: identifying “successful” threads you may have started or participated in that probably haven’t been elevated to Threadspotting status yet.
I did a feeble search on threads bearing “successful thread” in their titles and only came up with these two:
I had a couple of threads generate quite a few positive e-mails to me. One on obscure toys of our childhood and one of beautiful airplanes. Had some real fun with a POTC spinoff thread, 10 pages worth. I had a MPSIMS thread go over 3000 posts. Had several make threadspotting. Also, joined in one thread that earned the title of Most Bizaar Hijack Ever.
This thread of mine is the only one that I am aware of that actually got threadspotted. Still only got about 23 replies, most of them mine. :smack:
People seemed to react positively to my recent Smurf thread. Still, fell off the page. I don’t mind, as long as I’m not bothering the hell out of people. As long as I made a few people smile.
I don’t think I have a least successful thread. They’re all pretty neutral.
Oh, no, wait, I found one. I had to abort it. I don’t even remember where I was going with that one, originally. But it’s dead now.
Ohhhh… My most successful thread was a pit thread I started awhile back. It got ugly, really ugly. So ugly in fact it turned against me and I was made the honorary pittee. I never ever want to see that thread again. That was my most jerkish moment here at the SDMB.
My most successful thread would have been this one about whether or not you’d wear your seatbelt if you weren’t required to by law. I’m calling it “successful” based on the fact that it’s one of only two that I’ve started that reached onto a third page. A lot of people had opinions there.
My least successful would probably be the one I started asking people what calendars they’d bought themselves for the new year (2006). Not only had I somehow missed the fact that CalMeachem had started the exact same thread some seven hours earlier, but I also managed to double-post the OP. I was really batting 1.000 that day. :smack:
You know, no matter how funny something is to me, I rarely actually break out laughing at anything I read. The Smurf thread was a rare-but-wonderful exception. I’d already been a fan of yours, but, well – I’m a much bigger fan now.
Several people in the thread said “What famous thing surprised you when you saw it in person?” was one of the great threads. At nearly 300 replies, I think it sets some kind of record for not ever getting hijacked or degenerating into page after page of comments on what others posted before. It is quality content all the way to the end and a fun way to travel the world in your mind from perspectives you probably haven’t heard before.
My most viewed thread started out as an innocent little Café thread. Jon Stewart August 04, 2005. It got derailed and roamed the Fora from the Pit and Great Debates. It spawned several pit threads and had 6694 views but only 109 replies.
The one I am proud of is Rosa Parks died today at age 92.
She makes me proud to be an American and I liked the generally good response this thread received. only 68 replies but 1527 views.
My longest thread may turn out to be the current Pit thread for dear Martin Hyde. Several thousand views, into the 5th page, showing little sign of slowing down and has inspired at least two sig line changes.
My very first thread, on a Cecil column on same-sex marriage, garnered a response from Cecil himself on my first or second day, which gained me some temporary street cred. The thread itself may have continued to develop but it somehow became corrupted in the database, necessitating a lockdown, and the Mod-induced continuation thread didn’t really take off.
One of my favorite “am i not just the cleverest fellow” threads, coming amidst the spate of "Batman vs ______ " threads a few years back, was “Batman vs The Spanish Inquisition.” Batman always wins if he’s prepared, but no one expects the Spanish Inquisition! Didn’t hang around very long or garner many responses, but as I recall it was appreciated while it lasted.
Among the few (I average about 6 per year so far) threads started by me, the most successful one both interms of # of replies (103) and # of views (8236) is College professors say the darndest things. I’m not aware that any of my threads have been “threadspotted” though.
Number of replies for me was probably “The Atheist Religion”. At one point, it was closed and split off into a part II. It was, I think, the first thread I started in GD. Most positive responses was, I think, either my Pit thread about Indian Hater Jackson or my MPSIMS thread giving tips to Minnesotans about snow days in the South. That OP was published in Teemings and in another online e-zine.
My thread started count is getting close to 200 and a large portion of those have died on the vine with less than 10 replies. I see I have only five that made it over 100 replies:
There have been a few with less than 100 replies that I consider a success in terms of the quality of the replies, but the one that stands out is a fairly recent one:
If there are threads you didn’t start, but did participate in, that rank highly on your Success Meter, please indicate them. With a little luck we might be able to consolidate the “best threads” threads somehow.
Links to other threads dealing with this issue might help, too, if you know where they are.
As far as my least succesful? Any number of my threads with zero replies. Although this one I still wonder why it had no repleis, beacuse it’s a pretty darn cool flash thingy.
I also seem to have a habit of starting a thread, gettign no (or a few) replies, then a week later someone else starts a thread on the exact same thing and it’s popular (or at least more popular than mine.) I get the feeling no one likes me.
Or that I just write bad OPs that don’t lend themselvs well to replying too.
You have company in that regard. I even love it when the same topic (maybe a bit differently worded in the title or the OP) will soar in another forum where whatever forum I put mine in just passes by it like a dogturd on the street.
By far my Women vs Womyn threads… the original lost in the great December disater of 02’ I think… but the second version garnering a couple hundred posts and several thousand views.
