The Nanny and the Professor: Appreciation for and some questions about.

Do you remember this show and did you like it?

Does anyone know what the name of the type of distinctive hat that the Nanny wore was called?

Did you know that 15 episodes are available on Hulu.com for free?

“Phoebe Figalilly is a silly name
And so many silly things keep happening
What is this magic thing about Nanny
Is it love…or is it magic?”

Here is the fan site: Nanny and the Professor, Jump the Shark Entry, IMDB page & The wiki page.

I have been wanting to see this show again for decades. I loved it as a kid and the two animated movies they made after the show was canceled. I just found out this week that Hulu.com had it and I watched two episodes so far, The Wiblet Will Get You … & Nanny on Wheels. Both were good and this is one of the rare cases where an old show from my childhood is still good.

I remember the assortment of eccentric aunts and uncles very fondly; sadly they all appear to belong to seasons two and three. I love the car Arabella, a 1930 model ‘A’ Ford. I still am fond of the theme song. A put the last few lines above.

I have some small hopes that if enough people tune in to Hulu to watch the show, that maybe seasons 2 & 3 will also get put on Hulu.com.

I loved the show as a kid and have sat through a few episodes on hulu this year. I enjoyed it, but not enough to see all 15. But it did bring back a few good memories.

I like Fran Drescher and Russell Johnson as much as the next person, but that’s a rather strange combination…

Oh…we’re talking about Nanny and the Professor. That extra “The” threw me off.

I had that problem the other day talking about the show. The lady I was talking to said, “I liked the show, but the Nanny’s voice irritated me.” I looked at her cross-eyed and she added, “You know it was very nasal.” I laughed and had to explain I was talking about a much older show where the Nanny actually had a beautiful voice.

Sorry about the stray ‘the’, I doubt it is worth flagging down a Mod to fix.

Jim

I think the hat is a riding hat; I don’t remember the show very well, but was the nanny an equestrienne?

I believe all animals liked her and vice-versa, but it was never mentioned that she was an equestrienne that I can recall. The link to the fansite shows the hat on her head.

I was actually joking about the “the” (not to be confused with The The)- it amused me.

Sorry, I should have included a  , it was a funny joke with the cross of the other two iconic shows.

You know Nanny is now the witch on Passions.

She was such a pretty lady to be the daughter of Dr. Zaius!

The chimp from Planet of the Apes?
BTW: I just watch “The Tyrannosaurus Tibia”. This was a bad episode despite a guest appearance by Mr. Howell (Jim Backus) of all people.

The hat looks like it’s midway between a fox hunt cap and a deerstalker.

I mentioned to my wife it reminded me of a women’s version of Sherlock Holmes’ hat, a deerstalker type hat. I am guessing it had a specific name, I think I have vague memories of the model Twiggy wearing a similar hat at a similar time.

Dr. Zaius was an orangutan.

I’m not sure what FriarTed is referring to, although I see the actor who portrayed Dr. Zaius in the Planet of the Apes movies played Elizabeth Montgomery’s father in “Bewitched”. Maybe he conflated his sitcoms?

Yes. Juliet Mills’ father was John Mills, the Oscar-winning British actor (Ryan’s Daughter) who was also the father of Hayley Mills.

The British actor was played Dr. Zaius and Samantha’s father on “Bewitched” was Maurice Evans.

As the for the show that’s the topic of this thread, I haven’t seen an episode in many years. I do remember it being rather saccharine however.

That’s * why she’s familiar to me. Wow! Thanks.

She was also very good in the underrated film Avanti!. I had never seen this until a few years ago. She co-stars with Jack Lemmon and is excellent in the great little movie.

:smack: That should say, “The British actor who played Dr. Zaius and Samantha’s father on “Bewitched” was Maurice Evans.”

Update: Season 2 is now on Hulu.com
