Cafe Society Topics Nobody Wants to Talk About

My objective for this thread had been to provide a list of all the CS threads from the past year that had gotten 0 Replies. But there are too many!

It won’t cost you a 5-minute search to replicate what I did, and I think you’ll find the exercise amusing, or at least rewarding, if you’ve been one to start a thread and have it sit there until it rolls out of view.

====================================
On the Cafe Society main page, down at the bottom, you can adjust how threads are presented. Use these settings:

Display Options
Sorted By Number of Replies Ascending From The Last Year

When I did that within the past few minutes I got: Showing threads 1 to 50 of 9906

It was on Page 11 of 199 where I found the first instance of a 1 Replies thread!

Of course some of them are brand new or still on the first pages of the listing, but still!

See if you can spot one worth replying to. If so, copy/paste its data here, or go ahead and reply to it. If it’s a zombie your reply will likely get it locked!

See if you can find one that defies all reason to have been started at all. If so, let’s discuss its lack of merits here. Copy/Paste its key info here.

In any case, what’s your reaction to such a thing?

Guess this thread would go on that list too.

<smack!> :smack:

If only you hadn’t wrecked its chances!
PS: Thanks.

Here are the least viewed and least replied to CS threads from the past year.

Names removed to avoid offending anybody – hopefully.

People have different tastes. After all, Lost is still on TV and I think it’s a piece of garbage, but I’m in the minority on that one. There’s lots of stuff out there that I might have never given a second look if it weren’t for Cafe Society, though.

A point of order.

If an old thread with zero replies is resurrected by a substantive response I don’t think it should be locked. Furthermore, I suggest that such a thread isn’t really a thread at all. It’s just a zombie OP.

Perhaps a moderator could advise.

Whew. I had a zero reply OP from the past couple weeks but at least it apparently got views. I don’t suck so hard after all.

Well put, Chez Guevara, (glad you showed up here) and I endorse your view of the thread lacking substance until the first reply. Along the lines of one hand clapping and all that.

Maybe. Maybe not. I cut the list off at Feb/2009 on the theory that anything newer had at least a chance of being replied to before much longer. Did you actually check your thread for replies/views?

I just did, and it has 36 views.

I’m still floundering because no one clued me in to that childhood book I can’t remember. :frowning:

Help me remember a kids book - Cafe Society - Straight Dope Message Board (it did get 67 views)

And at least one reply!

Note that older versions of vB didn’t track numbers of views, so that counter only goes back as far as whenever that upgrade was. Threads older than that are likely to be listed as having zero views no matter how many they actually had.

If you are looking for a reaction to your OP, I think it’s an excellent idea.

Some direct questions in CS and GQ that remain unanswered deserve greater publicity. After a few months, or certainly given a year, the board population will change. New people will come in and, who knows, one of them might be an expert on ballet music or childhood books.

Maybe there should be a sticky in those two forums for such questions.

This one is especially poignant.

Ain’t it a fact! Can’t stop laughing!

Just think of the crappy seats he must have wound up with! It makes me weep :frowning:

On 7/22/2002 I asked:

This will never be answered – not only is the link now broken, but I can’t remember enough about the commercial to describe it.
