I agree and have seen quite a few successful and long-running threads like that. Thanks for that one. I might piggy-back onto the category and include Music Theory as well.
I like it when people talk about things I have some knowledge in, even if I don’t contribute anything helpful, such as computer graphics visual effects, or porn.
Thanks for mentioning an obvious omission. If Star Wars can be there, certainly Star Trek and other series deserve mention as major topics.
I had the thought that maybe somebody would take the time and trouble to list the latest x-number of threads (100, 500) and try to classify them as to major category and then, if warranted, minor subdivision of major category.
For instance:
– TV ahows
---- Dramas
------- The Wire
----------- Season 5
---------------- Episode 6
(Just for example)
I suspect TV Weekly Episodes would have more than a few threads if TV Shows got split into specific features that cause threads to be started and replied to.
I was going to wait for Voter #30 before posting one of my world-famous sorted summary things, but what they hey?

I think there should be a split between the generic sci-fi and fantasy, too, instead of listing it as sci-fi/fant. That works for a bookstore, but on a board that can have epic discussions about the minutiae of author’s intent vs perceived social bias in these works, I feel that we can separate the terms. ymmv
As I see this poll’s responses, the best I think we can hope for is that potential thread starters might take these opinions to heart when there’s a choice for which topic to get into just for kicks. If it’s something important to the starter, then surely these considerations oughtn’t apply. But when it’s a matter of “what thread should I start today just to have something to discuss?” perhaps these “guidelines” might be considered.
As it is, I think the TV, Movies, Books, Food and Music people should be happy. Whether the debate over Sci-Fi vs. Fantasy should matter, I can only guess.
Others who are more into those areas than I am should address this issue if they have strong opinions.
I would like to see more discussions on certain arts, like photography, or oil painting. Or even crafting. Sure, there are specific boards for these things, but I would like to know what is up with people who may not be so …obsessive… about art and craft stuff.
Then again, maybe we are indeed better off the way things are here.

Any specific topics strike your fancy, or just polls in general?
Good one.
Based on my comments upthread about taking the last x-number of threads as prime examples and trying to put them in categories might be a fun exercise one of these days when not a lot else is going on. It could be fun to see what “real life” has to say about this basic concept of “what do people like to discuss on Cafe Society?”
If anybody else would like to take on such a project for giggles, I would not object.
