Internet, give me objective advice on a new haircut!

Alright, I know the internet is the best place to get the answers to anything, and so I’m turning to you for your help (or lols). You see, I’m going through a big life change right now, and as part of it I’m going to try and completely redo my whole self-image. I’m looking to start off with a new haircut, but I have NO idea what passes for style today. (Obviously; I thought my ponytail looked really good) I’m willing to cut it short if it would look good on me. I haven’t had to do much other than brush it back and wrap a band around it, so I haven’t had any real experience in the way of hair product. That means gel, spray, or anything put on the hair that isn’t shampoo or conditioner (I use garnier fructis triple protection - and suggestions on shampoo are welcome as well). I am THAT new at fashion and whatnot. I’m 20 and live in texas, so I’ll be outside in hundred degree+ heat for months on end over the summer. I have sort of thin hair that lays pretty flat, with a bit of a “cow lick” (is that a word?) on the back. It isn’t too dry or oily, and any hair that isn’t in a hairband gets tossed up at the slightest hint of a breeze. It’s also my natural hair color. I’ve got blue eyes and I am really, really pale, if that factors into what looks good or not. I’m a college student studying computer science, so I’m OK with a ‘new’ experimental cut or something - I don’t mind being a bit odd.

I know my photography skills suck - I took these just to post here, because I don’t have any of me that are close up and casual. Any suggestion on what kind of glasses to get would be welcome as well. If you could post pictures that go with hairstyle descriptions, I’d be able to understand it a lot more. Thanks.

Again, I know I look like a girl and I’m ugly. Thanks, internet, I don’t need to hear it again.

Maybe a bit of an updated short-back-and-sides?

You don’t look like a girl and you’re not ugly - that is some lovely hair you have there. I don’t know about the glasses; the ones you have aren’t bad, but they aren’t doing much for you. I think you might just have to go to an eyeglass store and try every frame in the store on.

I’m a guy, so I dunno. I’d do what** Cat Whisperer** said.

  1. You look a bit androgynous, but that means you can get away with more, style wise! You are not ugly.
  2. Your natural color is gorgeous. Do not touch it. Put a color brush anywhere near that head, and I will come hurt you.
  3. With your glasses, you need something a little funky, but with some length. But not a fauxhawk. We are all tired of the fauxhawk. But I do recommend something related. Like this.

Plenty of height on top will detract from what looks like a fairly weak chin. Getting rid of all that hair will lighten you up a bit.

We’ll move on to use of pomades or gels when you’ve decided what cut you want.

Wow, you guys are a lot more helpful then 4chan was. The ‘short back and sides’ is pretty cool looking - is that gel that makes the top look like that? The ‘fauxhawk’ should look cool, but the emo guy rocking it makes me laugh. I’ve looked over a lot of hairstyles and found the following that I like

My favorite

Cool but IDK about all the wavy stuff. I don’t think I can pull that off

Both cool but I don’t know if I could look good with either of those

Comedy option - I think I’d look like a douchebag, but I can’t help but think this is cool. Lots of styling daily is probably required, though

Personally, I think you could totally pull off a Mike Mills.

Here he is with it a little shorter.

I’m into glasses and long hair, tho. But not pony-tail long.

!!! This is really awesome! The short hair pic looks really damn cool. Is that something my hair can just fall in to, or will I have to put stuff on it?

Cut the bullshit and just buzz it.

Do you have any pictures of what your hair was like before it was long? My suggestion would be to use that as a base, so that you can find something you don’t have to do a lot of work to maintain.

And I think you need bangs. I have to admit, I thought you looked balding from the front. I don’t think you are, though.

And definitely, no color. I know girls who would kill for hair that color.

You are looking to look less girly, right?

I think Mr. Beckham’s hair is just moussed and tousled, but I’m not a men’s hair expert.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any pics without long hair. Its been this long for 6 years now, and I never was much for picture taking.

Edit: I’m getting a haircut in a few days, but I want to build up ideas before I go. I have never once known what to ask for when going into a salon other than ‘trim it, please’. Yes, I want to look less feminine, Cat :smack:

If you think you look girly, make sure you choose a hairstyle that can’t be mistaken for a girl’s. The short Mike Mills looks like a Meg Ryan, and the longer styles all could pass for girls’ hairstyles. Stick with what Cat Whisperer recommended, or some other obviously guy hairstyle. Mousse or gel will give it body and make it go where you want it to.

I know I look a little girly, but it has never bothered me before. After posting this on a few forums, I’ve been told a lot that I look TOO girly. I didn’t notice it, but some people do. That said, I don’t mind having something long that may look a bit girly, as I try and look masculine in more ways than just the head. (I think a lot of the problem is people seeing only my face online) Cat’s suggestion was cool, but after looking it it, I can’t stop thinking about how damn short it is. Is there a longer variation? I’d feel almost bald with that haircut.

How often do you wear your hair up in a ponytail? If you do it more often than not, it really wouldn’t be all that different than having really short hair on the sides. If it still bothers you, you could take in a picture like that and just ask for the sides to be longer. Hair stylists are pretty flexible

I wear my hair back every day. When you’re talking about short hair, you mean when I’m referring to Cat’s suggestion? It even seems short on the top, but maybe asking for that style with longer bits would work. Was Zipper’s suggestion a flat out no?

I was referring to Cat’s suggestion, yeah. Now I’m not sure what to say. Hm.

I like Cat’s, but it’s also a style that looks good with that face. Your face is similar to mine, in that we’re both sort of soft and round. A short pixy-ish cut would look awful on me for that reason. The shorter cut Zipper posted might be a good bet. It has some length to play with and you can still go shorter from that point if you get comfortable.

I like the bit of length in that cut, and I just now thought about the ability to go shorter. I could go with that cut and if in a week or two I decide a few more inches would be good, I can just get it adjusted. I hope hair as thin and wispy as mine can work alright like that. Anything I can to do to make sure I don’t get millions of flyaways (prone to them) and that my hair doesn’t just congregate in one spot? Does the cut do that or some product?

I’m not much for hair(I just take a #1 to my scalp every week or two), but long ago I went through a long hair phase(not quite so long as yours though… I can tell ya this… Any style thats not hanging loose or in a ponytail means lots of hair maintenance to keep it that way.

One thing you might try is having a ponytail, but tying it lower… Guys tend to tie their 'tails lower than chicks do, down near the top of the neck, or a touch lower.

I also echo the sentiments to try out new glasses. Those are… Well, I’d rather wear the birth control glasses they issued me in boot camp than those. The arms… waaaaay too thick.

And how are things on the facial hair front? A goatee(or beard if you can manage… sadly, I can’t) may go over well, and is cheap and easily disposed of if you find you don’t like it. It would definitely help strengthen up your chin.

I never did realize how high I wore my hair until I took those pictures. For facial hair, well, my body hair is the same color as the rest of my hair, and when it congragates on my face it takes on a weird light-brown to tan hue that (I don’t think) is neither attractive nor desirable.

Edit: I’m going to the eye doctor later next week and when I go I’m going to try on lots of frames and take pictures to ask another forum what to get. I could post those here as well.

If you wear your hair tied back every day, what’s the point of having it long, then? I’m seriously asking, here. Just cut it short.
